WHAT IS PHOTONICS?Photonics is the science
of light (photon) generation, detection, and manipulation through emission, transmission, modulation, signal processing, switching, amplification, and detection/sensing.
What photonics includes? The science of photonics includes: • Investigation of the emission• Transmission• Amplification • Detection, and• Modulation of light.
What is Mobile Communications ?
Mobile Communication is communication network
(either public or private)which doesn’t depend on any physical connection
between two communication entities and have flexibility to be mobile during communication.
A wireless form of communication in which voice and data information is emitted, transmitted and received via microwaves.
Origin of Photonics
• The word 'photonics' is derived from the Greek word "photos" meaning light
• Appeared in the late 1960s • Began with the invention of
the Laser in 1960• It came into common use in
the 1980s as fiber-optic data transmission.
• It as a field focused largely on optical telecommunications.
• It covers a huge range of science and technology applications.
PRESENT USES OF PHOTONICS
• Adaptation of Smartphone’s . • Services like NFC ,Beam etc.
• Health care
• Photonic fiber's
• Smart devices .
Radio communication
Medical use
• Optical technologies have become a central part in today's clinical medicine, both in diagnostics and therapy.
Futuristic Applications of Photonics
Photonics integrated into chips Mobile devices and wearable devices will
incorporate photonics. Li-Fi In medical photonics, strong growth of photonic
diagnostics and more penetration of therapy could be seen.
Main growth areas in photonics over the next five or 10 years
Predictions for the future of Photonics…
Use of femtosecond lasers for precise surgery with minimal thermal damage is growing and for the research community
There are the challenges of understanding the brain and how we might put optogenetics to work.
The market for smart optical sensors is set to expand rapidly over the next few years. Such sensors will be found in smart phones or in other portable or wearable devices, and will read out huge amounts of data about our environment.
• And many more uses of such a developing field in association with communication are yet to be discovered .
