  • The July 2 nd meeting The meeting on July 2 nd of the P21-WG1 was a follow-up meeting of a prior WG1 workshop that had taken place on April 14 th 2014 Participation was ample, about 30 people from several companies and many universities companies: Alcatel-Lucent, Corian, Adva, Ericcson, Oclaro, etc. universities and research centres: Fraunhofer (HHI), Warsaw U., Pamukkale U., TU-Berlin, NTUA, Cyprus U., Max Planck I, AIT, TU Eindhoven, CESNET, Heriot-Watt U., etc. Proposals at the meeting were already highly structured and clearly were backed-up by multiple big players in a concerted way for example, various new-generation backbone network proposal were presented with very similar contents by: Alcatel-Lucent Coriant Adva [Ericsson backed it up with some added shift towards metro/edge] As a result of the meeting, the proposals (1)-(3) were formulated for the 2016-2017 WP, shown in later slides 6

  • Topics proposed by Corifi WG1 Prior to the P21-WG1 meeting, some topics of interest in Italy had been collected by the Corifi WG1 All topics were read and presented at the July 2 nd meeting of the P21-WG1. The impact was unfortunately small: either topics are already included in current proposals or are outside of WG1 scope or were not considered of interest. Clearly, being very late in the game, there was a small possibility of impacting the process. TOPICS: Use of optical fiber for distribution of signals at 60 GHz, via radio-over-fiber solutions, low-cost for home applications (perhaps using VCSEL to reduce cost and power consumption) [email protected] University of [email protected] FTTx (access), mobile backhaul (also in coordination with 5GPPP) [email protected] (Universit di Pisa S. Anna)[email protected] [email protected] (Francesco Matera, Fondazione Ugo Bordoni)[email protected] Indoor optical communications [email protected] (Universit di Pisa S. Anna)[email protected] (Guido Maier, [email protected] - Politecnico di Milano)[email protected] Software defined optical networks for optical clouds Optical interconnections: photonic backplanes and intra-datacenter networking Disaster-resilient optical transport network (Mario Martinelli, [email protected] Politecnico di Milano)[email protected] Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM): MDM appears an important breakthrough for increasing the total capacity not only in the transport but even in the access network as well in the intra- and inter-data-centres networks. Moreover, MDM can be exploited not only in the transmission layer but even as further resource in the switching/routing layer and in the optical wireless links. • P21-WG1 proposals for WP 2016/2017 1: Technologies for Petabit/s Optical Core and Metro Networks (Research Action) The objective of the research action is to develop new technologies for metro and core networks allowing capacities of Pb/s per node, and Tb/s per channel and 100 Tb/s per link over increased transport distances, respectively. At the same time, energy consumption, equipment footprint need to be improved by > 10x and network cost must be reduced significantly. As examples, 5 W power consumption per 100-Gb/s core interface and >30% network efficiency increase through programmability, advanced automation and control techniques must be achieved. integrated multi-wavelength transceivers new fiber types (few-mode, multicore, etc.) new optical layer design new spectrally efficient coded modulation formats signal processing for impairment mitigation transmission and link-engineering approaches trans-layer coordination Research action, 100% funding The area should be called in 2016/2017 with a budget of at least 32 M (4 8 M). A joint initiative with the EC network technology unit is desired to complement component and system with network level research 8

  • P21-WG1 proposals for WP 2016/2017 2: Optical Technologies for Ubiquitous Mobile and Fixed Access (Innovation Action) The objective of the innovation action is to develop new technologies for mobile and fixed access networks allowing to dramatically increase user capacity, quality of service, energy efficiency and number of connected devices at a sustainable cost (an example of guidelines for mobile networks is provided by 5G requirements). Starting from integrated photonic devices and subsystems, novel transmission and switching techniques will be developed as well as new network node concepts and control architectures. High speed low-cost tunable transceivers, new modulation formats, line codes and encapsulation techniques, new optical switching nodes with low latency and improved energy efficiency, new network control algorithms In essence, scaling down coherent backbone transmission and networking technologies so that they become attractive for the metro-access segment, both in the mobile and fixed context (ndr) The area is identified as priority #2 by WG1 for WP2016/17 and should be called in 2017 with a budget of at least 32 M (4 8 M). A joint initiative with the EC network technology unit especially in the 5G PPP context - is desired to complement component and system with network level innovation. 9

  • P21-WG1 proposals for WP 2016/2017 3: The Digital Village (Coordination and Support Action) The Digital Village has been promoted as Photonics21 flagship initiative to foster FTTx penetration in Europe by providing a platform to showcase and test new value-added services and applications at scale. It found broad support in the EC as well as in the P21 BoS. Target is a demonstrator connecting around 50,000 homes and businesses enabled by a mix of advanced broadband access technologies, advanced optical backhauling solutions, and connections to content distribution centers and the Internet. The CSA is identified as priority #3 by WG1, should be called in 2017 and requires an estimated budget of 1M (100% funding). 10

  • Scrubbed proposal This proposal was approved in the WG1 meeting on July 2 nd but did not pass later P21 review and was scrubbed. Research Priority EuroLab A pan-European photonic systems laboratory is envisaged, catering to the business needs of telecom/datacom vendors and operators, and facilitating take-up, validation and deployment of innovative systems based on emerging photonic components and technologies. It will provide large-scale enterprises and SMEs with innovation-support services in system design, simulation and prototyping, as well as testing facilities in the laboratory and in the field. Eurolab would be an action that would fund multiple, small-scale projects. Financing requested would likely be in the range of 60-80% of overall investment required, depending on the distribution of companies involved in the projects (i.e. whether they are SMEs or large enterprises, and how much of their own financing they are expected to provide). 2016, with a budget of 8M (1 large project/contribution). 11
