By embracing a rain garden in our own properties, we not only help to filter rainwater, but we also get to design attractive ecosystems that are beneficial to our environment’s many birds and insects. The Lower Rain Garden: Prevent runaway runoff

Showcasing innovative garden design that incorporates native plantings, the Lower Rain Garden is a developed vegetated depression that is naturally positioned to collect this property’s stormwater runoff. By incorporating strategically chosen plants, we can transform areas that are susceptible to runoff in our properties or yards into rain gardens that take advantage of natural water flows—and counteract erosion or the other potentially destructive effects of water runoff.

Rain gardens manage and put to use small amounts of stormwater that may collect on our properties. These vegetated depressions are great “Do It Yourself” projects for homeowners that also protect a land’s integrity. By directing runoff water into the garden, the rain that falls on rooftops, driveways, and other impervious surfaces infiltrates into the ground. Instead of running off across roads and highways, and eventually polluting local waterways, this naturally collected water now recharges our gardens, as well as local and regional aquifers. By embracing a rain garden in our own properties, we not only help to filter rainwater, but we also get to design attractive ecosystems that are beneficial to our environment’s many birds and insects.

The native plants selected for the Lower Rain Garden are high in pollen, nectar, and seed count. Light and water requirements for these plants can be found in the subsequent pages of the Lower Rain Garden’s plant index.
