Introduction

Mandatory assignment 04 – Photography have taught me a lot and have been very fun and exciting. I’ve learned to put much more thought into my photographs than I used to and I think my skills have improved during these past months.

The purpose of this assignment was to provide us with knowledge about the SLR camera, digital photography and image techniques, image analysis and understand-ing and critical use of images and their message. We were encouraged to experiment with photography and shoot a minimum of one image for each of the following topics: Night photo, freeze water, “misty/veil”, the golden section, motion, con-trast, low key or high key, curves and lines, drawing with light and depth.

Some of these topics were more challenging than others, such as drawing with lights and motion, but practice makes maybe not perfect but at least better and I’m satis-fied with the outcome of all the ten pictures.

This assignment was handed out in the beginning of the semester and we were to plan and space out our shoots. I didn’t make a specific schedule for this, but always had the assignment in the back of my mind, bringing my camera with me whenever I could. Some of the shots where planned, but most of them where shot when I un-expectedly found a good motive.

For all my pictures, I used a Sony A6000 with a small variety of lenses specified in the description for each image.

“Silence”Misty/veil

This is a photograph I am very fond of. It’s peaceful and quiet. It is a December afternoon and the light was just beautiful. I think this picture could fit into many of the categories of this assignment but I chose misty/veil because of the fog that makes it almost a bewitching atmosphere. When taking the picture I positioned myself carefully so that the boat would be in the dark area and in the lower right corner which I feel makes it a harmoniously compostition.

“Smile”The golden section

A picture that makes the viewer smile back. Shot inside a restaurant on a November afternoon. I wanted to take a picture without her noticing, but something funny was being said and she looked up just at the right moment. The candlelight in the foreground complements and gives a nice skin tone and sparkle in the eyes.

ISO: 3200 f/2.2 1/60

“Joy”Motion

This picture expresses the joyfullness of the child clearly enjoying a ride on theswing. It took a lot of attempts to get this picture right, the biggest problem was to get the focus where I wanted it. The focus point is at the girls body and the out of focus background gives a feeling of movement. The subject in focus is on the left side of the picture to emphasize movement to the right. It doesn’t follow “the rule of thirds”, as the subject is not directly on the intersections of the lines. I want-ed there to be both air above and underneath to show that she’s above ground and chose to place her just between the two horizontal lines.

ISO: 100 f/5.0 1/30
