The 'Dieppe maps' (1542-1568) by Desliens and others show 'Java La Grande', a large land mass in the south thought by some to be evidence of early Portuguese or Chinese exploration of Australia's coasts. The map was hand-copied in 1884 by a colleague of E.A. Petherick, the York Gate Library cataloguer from the original in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Petherick’s notes on the map and how the copy came to be made are adhered to the back of the frame.
