Analog output A sensor with an analogoutput does not switch at aparticular target distance. These devices havean analog output with adistance-dependent

output signal. The outputvoltage is proportionalto the object point in thesensing area. These systems operate onthe same principle as

sensors with backgroundsuppression. They generatea linear output signal withina certain range (measuringrange)

Focusing To achieve a smaller lightspot, the light beam fromthe emitter is focused usinglenses. Focusing and theresulting light spot allow the

switch to better detect smallparts and details.Focusing is often used withretroreflective sensors, aswell as with diffuse sensors,

and in conjunction withbackground suppression.

Gray scale shift Gray scale shift is theswitching distance differencewhen calibrating usingdifferent object reflectivities. The sensor is calibrated fora distance using a Kodak

gray card with 90 %reflection. A Kodak graycard having 18 % reflectionis used and the resultingdistance measured. Thedifference between these

two switchpoints in % isreferred to as the gray scaleshift. The smaller the grayscale shift the less color-dependent the sensor willbe.

Background suppression(background suppression)

Background suppressionallows objects within acertain switching distanceto be detected withoutbeing affected by a reflectingbackground and virtuallyindependent of objectreflectivity (color or surfacetexture). Background suppression isrealized by allowing the beamcones of the emitter and

receiver to intersect. Thisresults in a division of the fieldof view intoan active area and thebackground. In addition, bydividing the receiver intoat least two adjacent areas(e. g. by using a dual diodeor a PSD element) andby means of a geometricarrangement (triangulation),the actual position of the

object within the sensingrange can be determined. These two design featuresallow the object to be reliablydistinguished from thebackground. Diffuse sensorswith background suppressionare characterized by low grayscale shift and hysteresis.

Kodak gray card The “standard target” forphotoelectric sensors is theKodak gray card. This isa cardboard sheet whose

surface has a defined degreeof reflectivity. The sidewith 90 % reflection is usedfor determining the range of

diffuse sensors, and the sidewith 18 % for determiningthe gray scale shift.

Short circuit protection The output leads can beconnected to the wrongpotential without destroying

the sensor. Together withtheir polarity reversalprotection, these sensors

are completely protectedagainst miswiring.

Laser, laser class The purpose of laser classesis to protect persons fromlaser radiation by specifyinglimit values. Based on this, the lasers used are classifiedaccording to a scalereflecting the degree ofhazard. The calculations andassociated limit values for theclassification are described inEN 60825-1:2001-11. Thegrouping is based on acombination of output powerand wavelength, taking intoaccount emission duration, number of pulses and angleextension.

Balluff sensors operate inthe following laser classes:

Class 1: harmless,no protective measuresnecessaryClass 2: low power, eyelidreflex is sufficient protection.

Appropriate warning labelsmust be affixed to thedevice and in some casesto the machine in whichthe laser is used. No othermechanical or opticalprotection measures arerequired. When usingdevices from Class 1 and 2,no person responsible forlaser protection needs to bepresent.

55

Diffuse With diffuse types, theemitter and receiver areintegrated into a singlehousing. Orientation to thetarget is not critical.A target object (e. g. astandard target which is90 % reflective) bounces apart of the light from itssurface back to the receiver.Once the standard targetenters the effective beam

(see illustration), a changein the output switching stateoccurs. The sensing distancedepends upon size, shape, color and surface charac-teristics of the reflectingtarget object.Using a Kodak gray cardwith 90 % reflectivity (like

... occurs with an unevenand rough surface. It can bedemonstrated with a varietyof poorly-reflecting anddifferently-aligned miniaturemirrors.Incidental light is widely„scattered“ from such asurface. The reflection losses

are higher the darkerand more matte finished thesurface is.Diffuse sensors, for example, detect diffuse reflecting lightfrom target objects.

Emitter light Optical sensors generallyuse the following emittercomponents:

Red light-LEDVisible light, good as analignment aid and for sensoradjustment.

Red light laserVisible light whose physicalproperties make it ideal forsmall parts detection andlong ranges.

Teach-in Sensor settings on teach-insensors do not have to bemade using a potentiometeror slide switches; everythingis controlled with the push ofa button. The microcontrollerintegrated into teach-insensors allows the entiresetup sequence to becontrolled by pressing the

button. The use of definedcalibration steps also meansthat the sensor cannot becalibrated for an unreliablezone. The microcontrolleralso assumes control of thecontamination indicator andthe contamination output.A variety of Balluff teach-insensors also provide the

option of remote operation, whereby the teach-incalibration process isinitiated “externally” througha cable line.

Total reflection ...

reflection occurs: totalreflection, retroreflection, and diffuse reflection.

The reflection losses are inthe ideal case negligible.

In triangulation ... ... the light cones of athrough-beam systemintersect each other at anarrow angle. A target objectwill only be registered inthe area where the conesoverlap. The emitter light which isreflected or diffused fromobjects outside this limited

zone cannot be registeredby the photo-receiver.With this triangulationmethod, relatively smalldistance changes (e.g.grooves, shaft recesses) areidentified. Color and shapeof the object have very littleeffect on the registration.

Polarity reversalprotection

The supply voltage leadscan be reversed withoutdestroying the sensor.

In combination with the shortcircuit protection, thesesensors are completelyprotected against miswiring.

Contamination ...(influence on the sensingrange)

... reduces the indicatedsensing range of sensorsand fiber optics ascompared with „pure air“,because the dirt and dustparticles:

– accumulate on the lensesand impair their lighttransparency,

– absorb and scatter light inthe beam path.

An oil-free source ofcompressed air can be usedto prevent the effects ofdirt and contamination dueto impure air.

BODDistance Sensors

Optical distance sensorsare used when distancesof objects need to bemeasured or monitored ortheir precise positiondetermined.

Distance measurement isbased on the principles oftriangulation or speed of lightmeasurement.

PSD elements or CCD arraysare used for the receivingelements, with the emitterconsisting of a red light orlaser light source.

Analog current and voltagevalues, serial interfaces anddigital outputs are availableto the user.

BOD 63MLaser Distance Sensors

72

The BOD 63M in itstough metal housing has aworking range of200...2000/6000 mm. Itfeatures adjustablebackground fade-out and ananalog output of 0...10 V or4...20 mA.

Speed of light measurementenables longer rangesthan triangulation-based orenergetic diffuse sensors.

The switching outputsare set using a multi-turnpotentiometer.

This innovative sensortechnology is used inapplications where traditionalmethods meet eithertechnological or economicallimits. Such applicationsinclude detecting smallobjects at great distancesand operating in difficultconditions. e.g. if sensingmust be performed“externally” in process withhigh temperatures or inrobotic cells.

Applications

– Exact detection tasks overlong distances (e.g. due todesign limitations or heatat the target location)

– Detecting objects withchanging colors, shinysurfaces or unfavorableangle to the light beam

– Flexible solutions forposition sensing, leveldetection and monitoring, distance and heightmeasurement, qualityassurance applications

PhotoelectricDistanceSensors

Laser class(see page 55)

The emitter meets LaserClass 2 perEN 60825-1:2001-11.This means no additionalsafety measures arenecessary.

Install the device so that thelaser warning label is easilyvisible.

Features

– Small laser spot fordetecting small objectsover large distances

– Virtually independent ofthe reflective properties ofthe target object withina particular sensing range

– Background suppression(HGA) over the entireworking range

– Analog, binary and alarmoutput

– Laser beam can be turnedoff

These sensors are also available asIO-Link types. Please request our separate IO-Linkbrochure!
