Then we used to collect loads of shells and pebbles to decorate each other with. Child: Did you collect the shells in your bucket like I do? Gran: Sometimes but we had to share one bucket and spade between six so we had to take it in turns to use them. My bucket and spade wasn’t like yours either. The bucket was made of metal and the spade was made of metal too with a wooden handle. Dad: Didn’t you used to watch a Punch and Judy show on the beach every day too? Gran: Yes. It used to cost ha’penny each to watch the show. Child: What’s a Punch and Judy show? Gran: It’s a puppet show with characters in it called Punch and his wife Judy as well as a crocodile, a policeman and a baby. Punch was always horrible to Judy and the baby but the policeman always used to come and tell him off. It was very funny then but I’m not sure people would laugh at it as much now. Child: What else did you like to do? Gran: I used to love going on the pier because you could see the sea between the planks of wood. There were some amusements on the pier too. In those days you had to pay to go on the pier so it used to be our special treat on the last night of the holiday to spend the evening there. We were each given a few pennies to spend and they used to last us all evening. I always used to have a go on the coconut shy but I never used to win. Child: It sounds like there are lots of things that have changed about the seaside. Dad: Yes but there are lots of things that sound like they haven’t changed that much too. They were Gran’s parents, your great grandparents. Gran: (chuckles) Your Great Granddad Tom used to build a boat out of sand for your dad and Uncle Kevin. It was big enough for them both to sit inside. Dad: We used to imagine we were pirates and chase after Aunty Rachel. We picked her up once and put her in a great big hole we’d dug. Gran: Rachel was really upset after that, wasn’t she? I made you and Kevin go and buy everyone an ice cream to cheer her up. Dad: I remember, yes. The ice creams I bought weren’t in cones. The man unwrapped a slab of vanilla ice cream for each of us and put it between two wafers. I haven’t had an ice cream like that for a long time. Child: What else did you do on the beach? Dad: Gran used to write postcards to everyone while your Granddad organised ball games like rounders and football for us all to play. He used to ask other families on the beach if they wanted to have a competition. The games would go on for ages. It was really good fun. Gran: Your dad used to go paddling in the sea a lot too. Your uncle Kevin never liked going in the sea because he said it was too cold but your dad and Aunty Rachel used to like trying to jump over the waves. Dad: That was always good fun.
