Academic Session 2015, a special time for Tribute and Thanks

W ednesday, July 22, 2015, was a memorable day for the SLU community. At 1:30 in the

afternoon, joyful musical sounds aired by the SLU band announced the annual academic session, that started this year with the Gawad San Luis ceremony for faculty and employees. After the audience had witnessed the awarding of their meritorious colleagues, Rev. Fr. Jessie M. Hechanova, CICM, president of Saint Louis University for the past ten years, gave his last address to the community, which was conceived as a retrospective of the transformation of the university during his presidency. After Father’s speech, a group of at least twenty retirees were invited to the stage and received a public tribute for their invaluable contribution to the life and growth of the university. Father Jess will retire at the end of July 2015. Truly, Father Jess’ mission to transform has been accomplished, even as time goes on and new challenges are already announcing further transformations, which Father acknowledged with the words “The journey continues.”

“Dear Father Jess, the Louisian community will remain forever grateful for what has been achieved in the past decade. May God continue to bless you and all your further plans and endeavors, and may he continue to kindle the missionary spirit among us in the university!”

F ive decades of service to SLU, fifty-eight years as a CICM Missionary

(come August 4, 2015) and forty-eight years since establishing SLU’s Psychology department, these frequencies are but a tip of the iceberg of the amazing work Fr. Evarist Verlinden, CICM, has presented to SLU. As gratitude for Fr. Evarist’s significant professional and personal contributions to his students, more than one hundred thirty psychology graduates (a mixture of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees) representing more than thirty batches

produced over the last 48 years, gathered and paid tribute to Fr. Evarist’s reverence, commitment and dedication in the training of psychology students last July 11, 2015 at the CCA.

The tribute began with Fr. Geraldo Costa, CICM, Tribute Convenor, sharing the rationale of the gathering, while Rev. Fr. Jessie M. Hechanova, CICM, SLU President, shared in his opening remarks how Fr. Evarist is a pillar of SLU as well as of his confreres. The tribute comprised Fr. Evarist’s biographical sketch as a CICM

Missionary and as Father of Psychology in SLU. A launching of the prospected celebration of 50 years of Psychology in SLU also took place. In between were entertaining production numbers by the CCA talents. The highlight of the tribute was Fr. Evarist’s response when he thanked and congratulated everyone present. He acknowledged the presence of everyone and mirrored how his students made his life meaningful as well. The tribute ended on a high note with everyone anticipating the 50 years of Psychology come 2017.
