Art Criticism PowerPoint Presentation

Objectives: To research a well-known photographer within the history of photography and create a PowerPoint lecture

about his/her life and work with an emphasis on critiquing one example of his/her work. To give an oral presentation to the class about the photographer and his/her work. To learn from one another and broaden your knowledge of the history of photography.

Directions: The primary focus of your presentation should be about the artist’s work. Select at 10 examples which

exemplify the artist’s work and do a detailed four step art criticism on ONE print during your presentation. Your lecture should briefly summarize the artist’s major life achievements. Be sure to place each artist in historical context other things that were happening in the world at the time, contemporary artists, scientific discoveries, major world events, musical premiers, etc

All images that you use should have a title line: Title (of photograph), date and medium. The title line should be small.

Use the Art Criticism worksheet to gather your information. Research should come from several different sources including at least one book.

Create a “notes” page in word. Number 1 to 14 (slide numbers) and in your own words, type what you will say for each slide from your gathered research.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PRESENTATION WORD FOR WORD FROM A WEBSTIE! This is a research project that requires you to look at several sources and draw some conclusions about your chosen photographer. Presentations taken word for word from a source will be considered plagiarized.

Art Criticism (Be sure to include ALL four steps. Your criticism should show that you have spent time looking at and reading about the photograph):

1. Description: What do you see?List the objects that you see in the photograph. Where are they located? Are they close to the viewer or far? Is this a nonobjective work, or do the shapes in this work represent objects? Be thorough in your description and placement. 2. Analysis: How is the work organized?This step deals with the composition of the work. Use your knowledge about the art elements and principles of design to understand the composition of the work. How are the principles of art used to organize the art elements? Analyze the relationship, if any, between the subjects in the work. Has the photographer used a narrow or deep depth of field? Has he stopped or blurred motion? Used framing or the rule of thirds?

3. Interpretation: What is the Photographer trying to communicate?Here we focus on the content of the work. This is where you make guesses about the meaning. Explain the meaning or mood of the photograph. Your interpretation must be based on visual facts and clues that you have collected during your first two steps. Your interpretation can be based on your feelings, but your feelings must be backed up by observation of what you actually see in the photograph.

4. Judgment: What do you think of the work?In this step of art criticism you decide if the work of art is successful or not. You must determine the degree of artistic merit. This is the time to make your own decisions. The first is personal – do you like it? The second is subjective – is it successful? You might like the work but not think it is a successful piece; or you may not like the work but know it is a very good work. Be sure to research what experts have said about the work, too.

Writing a Thesis StatementWhat is a Thesis Statement? In the beginning of the presentation there should be a one or two sentence condensation of an argument or analysis that is to follow. This condensation is the thesis statement which follows the introduction.Why should you include a Thesis Statement?

- To test your ideas by distilling them in a sentence or two.- For better organization and development of your argument.- To provide your audience with a “guide” to your argument.

In general, your thesis statement will accomplish these goals if you think of the thesis as an answer to the question your presentation explores.

*****How to Generate a Thesis Statement:Almost all assignments, no matter how complicated, can be reduced to a single question. Your first step, then, is to distill the assignment into a specific question. For example, if your assignment is “Write a paper on a well known photographer,” turn the request into a question like “What makes this photographer stand out among his peers?” “What contributions has this photographer made to the art world?” After you have chosen the question your essay will answer, compose one or two complete sentences answering that question.

Q: “In what way did Eugene Atget help to preserve the look of 19th Paris?”

A: “Eugene Atget’s dedication to preserving images of the architecture as well as the minute detail of ordinary Paris and surrounding areas before modernization, has left a record of what the life of 19 th century Paris was like.”

The answer to the question is the thesis statement for the essay.

You should have a general idea of what your thesis statement is when you begin; however, it should not be set in stone. As you do your research, you may come upon other ideas and thoughts that take you in different directions. You may want to revise your statement after you have put your presentation together or revise what you are presenting if it doesn’t answer the question that your thesis presents.
