he European Union Youth Orchestra is one of the world’s most prestigious and dynamic orchestras. It unites Europe’s most talented young musicians from all 27 EU countries, under some of the world’s most

famous conductors, in an orchestra that transcends cultural boundaries and performs all over the world.

The musical ability and commitment demanded of the players, combined with the renowned musical leadership of its conductors, has won the EUYO an outstanding musical and educational reputation and regular comparisons with the world’s finest orchestras.

The Orchestra is composed of up to 140 players, drawn from all 27 member countries of the European Union. The players are selected each year from thousands of candidates aged between 14 and 24, who take part in auditions throughout the EU. The competition is such that current members of the Orchestra have to re-audition along with new applicants each year in order to keep their places. Once the members have been selected for the year, they are invited to join the EUYO in spring and summer for intensive rehearsal periods followed by demanding tours, offering them the opportunity to perform on international stages all over the world.

The EUYO provides an invaluable professional development experience for young orchestral musicians. It is an unparalled advanced training opportunity for musicians to bridge the gap between music colleges and the cosmopolitan professional music world. Over 90% of EUYO players go on to become professional musicians, and many have found jobs with Europe’s leading orchestras.

The EUYO was founded in 1976 by the late Lionel Bryer and Joy Bryer, respectively the founding Chairman and Secretary General of the International Youth Foundation of Great Britain, with a view to creating an orchestra that would represent the European ideal of a community working together to achieve peace and social and cultural understanding. Since its inception it has received the support of the European Parliament and the European Commission with both financial aid and political backing.

Claudio Abbado, the Orchestra’s Founding Music Director, and the late Sir Edward Heath, KG, its first President, helped to establish the EUYO as a world-

class institution. Claudio Abbado was succeeded as Music Director by Sir Bernard Haitink, who in turn was succeeded in 2000 by the EUYO’s present Music Director, Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Since its inaugural tour, the Orchestra has gone from strength to strength and continues to attract incredibly gifted players and world-class conductors, performing to full houses in all the major cities, concert halls, and festivals of Europe, as well as undertaking important foreign tours to destinations which have included China, Hong Kong, Japan, India, North and South America, Kazakhstan and Russia.

In recognition of the Orchestra’s achievements, prizes awarded to the EUYO include the Olympia Prize of the Alexander S Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, the ‘Prix d’Initiative Européenne’, the Grant for Young Artists awarded by The Praemium Imperiale and the European Media Prize.

2010 at a glance

In 2010 the EUYO worked with more than 250 of Europe’s finest young musicians reaching around 25,000 people through its performances and millions more through broadcasts. In spring, after a residency in Interlaken, the EUYO wowed audiences in a series of concerts among the mountains of Switzerland and Italy, under the EUYO’s current music director, Vladimir Ashkenazy. Grace Francis (British pianist) and Patricia Kopatchinskaja (Moldovan violinist) joined the orchestra for two highly acclaimed concerts. Vocal soloists Rachel Harnisch, Katharina Peetz, Artjom Korotkov and Hee-Do An, and the Chœur Pro Arte de Lausanne, also joined the EUYO for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, which brought the audience to its feet.

In May, the EUYO was invited to perform as Goodwill Ambassador for the European Union at a special Gala concert at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Seventy-six members of the Orchestra performed a whirlwind musical journey around Europe under Spanish conductor Inma Shara, in a concert that was the highlight of the EU’s Europe Day celebrations. Guest soloist 20-year-old Zhu Liying, a rising star from the Beijing Conservatoire, thrilled her compatriots with a rendition of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. The concert ended with a surprise item, a popular Chinese song, Ye Shanghai (Shanghai Nights), which was specially arranged for the event and was greeted with delight by the predominantly Chinese audience.

In summer, after a two-week rehearsal period in Grafenegg, Austria, the EUYO performed with British-Ukrainian Violist Maxim Rysanov both in Grafenegg and in the renowned BBC Proms series in London, under Matthias Bamert. Gianandrea Noseda then conducted Europe’s rising stars in sell-out concerts in Poland, the Netherlands (with Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman), Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

For many of the musicians, the highlights of the tour were performing at the BBC Proms and performing in Berlin, as part of the Young Euro Classic Festival. But, as one young player put it, there was much more to celebrate than just the performances:

“The new energy that now I have in my blood. The smile of all the EUYO players-team, our music in my ears, the euphoria that we made on the stage, off the stage in a pub, the publics of our concerts, the musical ideas that I won with this experience, the ideas that my friends gifted to me, all my friends... BILLIONS of things...”

ne of the few artists who has combined a successful career as a pianist and conductor, Vladimir Ashkenazy first came to prominence on the world stage in the 1955 Chopin Competition in Warsaw and

as first prize winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 1956. Since then he has built an extraordinary career, not only as one of the most outstanding pianists of the 20th century, but as an artist whose creative life encompasses a vast range of activities and continues to offer inspiration to music-lovers across the world.

Conducting has formed the largest part of his activities for the past 20 years. He took up the new position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in January 2009 and collaborates with them on extensive recording projects and international touring activities each year. He has previously held posts as Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director of NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo.

Alongside these positions, Ashkenazy continues his longstanding relationship with the Philharmonia Orchestra of which he was appointed Conductor Laureate in 2000. In addition to his performances with the orchestra in London and around the UK each season, he tours with them worldwide, most recently to China and Korea, and has developed landmark projects such as ‘Prokofiev and Shostakovich Under Stalin’ in 2003 (a project which he also took to Cologne, New York, Vienna and Moscow) and ‘Rachmaninoff Revisited’, which was reprised in Paris in October 2010.

Ashkenazy also holds the positions of Music Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra (since 2000), with which he tours each year, and Conductor Laureate of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. He maintains strong links with a number of other major orchestras with which he has built special relationships over the years, including the Cleveland Orchestra (of which he was formerly Principal Guest Conductor) and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (Chief Conductor and Music

Director 1988-96), as well as making guest appearances with many other major orchestras around the world.

While conducting takes up a significant portion of his time each season, Ashkenazy maintains his devotion to the piano, these days mostly in the recording studio, where he continues to build his extraordinarily comprehensive recording catalogue with releases such as the 1999 Grammy award-winning Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues, Rautavaara’s Piano Concerto No.3 (a work which he commissioned), Bach’s Wohltemperiertes Klavier, Rachmaninov’s Transcriptions and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. His most recent release is a disc of Bach Partitas.

Beyond his hectic and fulfilling performing schedule, Ashkenazy continues to be involved in some fascinating TV projects, often inspired by his passionate drive to ensure that serious music continues to have a platform in the mainstream media and is made available to as broad an audience as possible. Many will remember his programmes with the outstanding director Christopher Nupen, as well as 1979’s ‘Music After Mao’, filmed in Shanghai, and the extraordinary ‘Ashkenazy in Moscow’ programmes, which marked his first visit in 1989 to the country of his birth since leaving the USSR in the 1960s. More recently he has developed educational programmes with NHK TV including the 1999 ‘Superteachers’ working with inner-city London school children, and in 2003-4 a documentary based around his ‘Prokofiev and Shostakovich Under Stalin’ project.

As an opera conductor, Flor continues his relationship with the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse. Last season he conducted its revival of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte – a production he premiered with the house in 2007 as part of a Mozart cycle. He returns to Toulouse in 2011 for a revival of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and in 2011/12 for a new production of Wagner’s Rienzi. Recent operatic collaborations include the production of Wagner’s Siegfried, directed by David McVicar with Strasbourg Opera in 2008, and other productions with the Staatsoper Berlin, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Munich, Dresden, Hamburg, and Cologne opera houses. He has conducted Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger at La Monnaie in Brussels, taking the latter on tour to Tokyo; Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte for Houston Grand Opera; Weber’s Euryanthe for Netherlands Opera with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Puccini’s La bohème for Dallas Opera.

Flor has a large discography, including an acclaimed series of Mendelssohn recordings with the Bamberg Symphony, which have recently been re-issued by Sony/BMG. Most recently he has made two recordings with the Malaysian Philharmonic for BIS label; Suk’s Asrael Symphony released in 2009 and Dvořák’s Symphonies No.7 and 8, which will be released next year.

Born in Leipzig in 1953, Flor began his musical career with violin tuition in Weimar and Leipzig, before focussing on conducting with Rolf Reuter and later on with both Rafael Kubelik and Kurt Sanderling. At the age of 31 he became General Music Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and also began regular associations with the other major German orchestras: the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Dresden Staatskapelle. In 1988 he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, where he has since returned twice.

Prior to his position as Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Flor held the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi (2003-08) at the personal invitation of their Music Director Riccardo Chailly, with a remit to develop the orchestra’s work in the central European repertoire. From 1999-2008 he was also Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra (1991-94) and Artistic Advisor to the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra (1991-96).

As the European Union Youth Orchestra embarks on its Spring Tour, I feel that nothing could send a more powerful message of European cooperation than young musicians gathering together, from across 27 countries, to create a common musical language.

To hear these talented performers – whose scintillating sound is made all the richer for their cultural differences – is not only deeply uplifting but also reminds us vividly of the fruits of the European project: lasting peace and a brighter future for our youth.

I am particularly delighted that the EUYO will bring this message of hope to Serbia and Croatia, which have suffered such a turbulent history in recent years. Nothing offers a clearer representation of this than the European Union Youth Orchestra. To see young musicians channelling their talent into a common endeavour, drawing inspiration from their cultural heritage and making it their own, is a source of hope and inspiration for us all.

Once again, the Orchestra is expanding its horizons, this time with its first visit to Croatia. I am particularly pleased that this year young musicians from Croatia and Serbia will participate in concerts in Zagreb and Belgrade, epitomising the inclusive spirit of the Orchestra. The European Union Youth Orchestra’s Spring Tour will bring young and extremely talented European musicians together to practice, study and perform on stages in and outside the European Union. This wonderful orchestra helps to bridge the gap between the musicians’ education and their professional career on the international stage and in this sense one could say that the Orchestra is an ‘essential breeding ground’ for emerging new European talent.

The European Commission’s Culture Programme supports the Orchestra and I am personally delighted that our continued involvement in the European Union Youth Orchestra is helping it to reach out to audiences across Europe. As this Spring Tour shows, there is great public demand for excellent music; however touring and performing is costly and it would be impossible without European support. By investing in new talent, this Orchestra is investing not only in the young musicians on stage, but also in our future.

For this Spring Tour we are also delighted to celebrate Liszt’s bicentenary, which coincides with Hungary’s EU Presidency, and we are especially proud to have been invited to give the closing concert of the Budapest Spring Festival in such an auspicious year. Liszt was the quintessential European and a pioneering composer and performer, so we place his music alongside music with which he had strong musical and personal connections, by his son-in-law Richard Wagner: capitalising on the strength of our magnificent EUYO, we can programme extracts from The Ring despite the huge forces called upon by the composer!

We also continue our connections to literary giants – last year it was Byron, with a pre-echo of Shakespeare; now this April, as our Easter concert falls on Shakespeare’s birthday, we have programmed another Tchaikovsky work with a Shakespeare theme, an overture by the somewhat Shakespeare-obsessed Berlioz, one of our Music Director’s favourite Elgar works, and movements from Prokofiev’s great ballet – noting that Prokofiev shared his birth date with the Bard of Avon. Finally, our concert in Como (the birthplace of Cosima, Liszt’s daughter and Wagner’s second wife) gives us a rare but welcome opportunity to collaborate with the medium of dance, in Poulenc’s ‘concerto choréographique’.

I am delighted that the Orchestra will be returning to Łódź for its main rehearsal period and two concerts. Łódź is a remarkable city in which to rehearse – the warmth and generosity of its citizens, as well as their musical tradition, inspire our young musicians to even greater musical heights. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our hosts, the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academy of Music in Łódź, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and Witold Stępień, Marshal of the Łódź Region, and applaud their incredible financial generosity during these difficult times.

I am proud to welcome to our EUYO family a new Maestro: Claus Peter Flor, Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra who is particularly renowned for his interpretations of the operatic repertoire.

I am thrilled that our beloved and inspirational Music Director, Vladimir Ashkenazy, will also be working with us this Spring. In our Como concert, Maestro Ashkenazy, his son Vovka, and daughter-in-law Alessandra, will perform Poulenc’s Aubade, displaying the beauty of dance and music in all its glory. As the ‘Mother’ of Europe’s largest musical family, with thousands of children and even grandchildren, it is a pleasure to see such a shining example of a family united in musical endeavour.

performance of the European Union Youth Orchestra in Łódź last August we again have the pleasure to host the musical symbol of the European community in the Łódź Region. We are especially pleased with the fact that this time Łódź becomes EUYO’s artistic haven, where for 14 days young musicians from 27 EU countries will perfect their repertoire, preparing for a concert tour of the Continent.

I am convinced that in this city, built with multinational capital at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, you will find the European spirit. It is certain that the universal language of music will allow you to communicate with the inhabitants of the region without any barriers.

EUYO in Serbia

I am delighted to welcome the European Union Youth Orchestra, composed of 115 young musicians coming from the 27 member states of the European Union, to Serbia. It is my particular pleasure to note that for this special concert in Belgrade, this unique symphonic orchestra will also include two Serbian musicians.

It is through the universal language of music and with the dedication, the energy and the passion of young people that cultural, political, social or economic boundaries can be surpassed, bringing joy and peace to people.

The common effort of making Liszt and Wagner resonate through all these different talents and under the leadership of an excellent conductor is a symbol of the diverse and ever-changing Europe to which we all belong.

Having started her classical ballet training in Florence, and obtained at a very early age the final diplomas from the Royal Academy of Dance, Alessandra Ashkenazy completed her studies at the Académie de Danse Classique Princesse Grace, Monte Carlo, the John Cranko School, Stuttgart and the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp, with teachers such as Marika Besobrasova, Alex Ursuliak, Egon Madsen, Gabriel Popescu and Woitek Lowsky.

Since then she has worked with Carla Fracci’s Compagnia Italiana di Balletto and has danced in productions by international choreographers, including Derek Deane, Wayne Eagling, Gillian Whittingham, Ricardo Nunez and Gheorghe Tancu. She won the Arena di Verona competition, directed by Pierre Lacotte and Ghislaine Thesmar, where she performed in the world première of Zorba the Greek, choreographed by Lorca Massine, working alongside the great Vladimir Vassiliev.

Moscow-born Vovka Ashkenazy, of Russian and Icelandic parentage, was brought up in England and Iceland. He made his début in 1983 at the Barbican Centre, London, performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the LSO under Richard Hickox.

Since then, his career has taken him all over the world. He has performed at the Edinburgh, Marlboro and Spoleto Festivals, and orchestras he has appeared with include the major British orchestras as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Australian Chamber and the Berlin Symphony Orchestras, under the batons of, among others, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Semyon Bychkov, Martin Fischer-Dieskau and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. He is an active chamber musician and has performed and recorded with clarinettist Dimitri Ashkenazy, with whom he has toured Japan several times. He has also performed and recorded with Vladimir Ashkenazy, with whom he recently brought out a CD of French music for two pianos with Decca, with plans for a Russian CD this summer. Their duo concert activities in 2010 took them to Italy, Switzerland, Turkey and the Far East, and a tour of Japan and Korea is planned for this autumn. He has also worked together with the Reykjavík Wind Quintet, recording a CD on the Chandos label. A second CD is due out this year.

Vovka Ashkenazy also devotes time to teaching and has given masterclasses all over the world.

He lives with his family in Switzerland.

alEssandra ashkEnazY Oper under Gerd Reinholm, where she worked with Roland Petit and Peter Schaufuss, and the Bonn Opera, first under Youri Vàmos and then Valery Panov.

She currently lives in Switzerland with her family where, alongside performing, she also teaches, collaborating with the ‘Motoperpetuo’ association in Lugano.

The Sir Robert Bellinger Award was presented in 2010 to 21-year-old António Novais from Portugal, the EUYO’s co-principal of the cello section for the current season.

The Award, generously donated by the Bellinger Donnay Charitable Trust, is awarded each year to a member of the EUYO who has demonstrated huge musical talent and potential, but whose development and career would benefit greatly from financial assistance.

António, who was awarded the £5,000 grant following the 2010 Summer Tour, has used the award to help him continue with his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

ur Chairman, Robert A Albert, makes an award each year to a member (or members) of the orchestra who, in the opinion of the Secretary General and the General Manager, has contributed

most towards the creating of an atmosphere of harmony and understanding during the summer tour, so that the ideals of the EUYO – the bringing together of musically talented youth from the different nations, religions, cultures and traditions of the European Union to form an orchestra of world-class standard – are realised. The award for the current season was presented jointly to two members: orchestral pianist Robin Green (British) and violinist Esther Feustel (German).

Robin Green currently holds the Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal College of Music in London, having graduated from the college in 2008, where he studied piano with Yonty Solomon and Andrew Ball. Robin also studied conducting with Peter Stark and Neil Thomson. He joined the EUYO in 2010. Traditionally, the pianist has a relatively small role within the Orchestra, and as he or she does not belong to a section, it can sometimes be a bit isolating. Not so for Robin: he threw himself heart and soul into the life of the Orchestra and

gained the respect and friendship of players, tutors and staff alike. When asked if he would rehearse and then conduct several of the chamber music pieces, he rose to the occasion with gusto, leading his peers in some wonderful, playful and slick performances. By going over and above the call of duty, he truly reflected the ideals upon which the Orchestra was founded.

Esther Feustel took up the violin at the age of five. She studied for several years under Prof T Tomaszewski at the Julius Stern Institute of the University of the Arts, Berlin. From 2004 to 2011 she studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Mannheim, first with Prof Dora Bratchkova and then with Prof Marco Rizzi. She graduated in January 2011. From 2008 to 2010 she played with the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and she has been a member of the Mannheimer Ensemble since 2005.

A new member of the EUYO last year, she immediately understood what the Orchestra was all about – not only a place to make great music but a place to connect and bond with other musicians from very different cultural backgrounds. When the EUYO performed in Berlin she volunteered to organise a post-concert dinner and night out for the entire Orchestra. The evening, which began in a fantastic restaurant on the Eastern side of town, was hugely appreciated by all the players and staff, and really contributed to the feeling of kinship among the players.
