Photo Books: Important Things to Review Before You Print

Making a memorable photo book is more than gorgeous pictures or using unique clip art and backgrounds. The key to a great looking memento is to review your photo book, then proofread it again…and again. Consider that you have customized everything in the book and it's a reflection of you. You were the one who chose the template or design, selected the colors and theme, inserted the photos and wrote the text. Hence, if you take great care when designing and proofing your book, you will be delighted when you receive your beautiful creation. If you make mistakes, the photo site will print them as-is.

Check for Typos and Grammatical Errors Just about all photo services provide spellchecking, but it doesn't always catch everything. Proof your text for the correct wording. It's easy to do, we type a word like "now" instead of "know" and the spellchecker doesn't know the difference.

Look out for warnings that you may have a problem with photo resolution or typos.

Appropriate Sized Fonts with Good Contrast Review each page to make sure the fonts are appropriately sized for the layout. I find myself guilty of this on occasion. I left the default setting for the fonts instead of choosing my own, which would have improved the overall look. If possible, print your pages out and review them. Snapfish is one photo book site that allows this. Can you easily read the text or does it look a little overwhelmed by the photos? Does the text color show up easily against the page background color? If you are using a lot of text, avoid a busy background, otherwise the text may be hard to read no matter how much contrast it has with the background colors.

Avoid Putting Important Elements Too Close to the Edge Although extending images to the edge of the page can be a nice effect, be sure key features such as text, faces, etc. are positioned away from the edges and the inside gutter. You don’t want to risk a chance that something crucial gets cut off during the printing process. A good rule of thumb is to leave 1/2 inch of space between important elements and the edge of the page.

Check Your Photos' Resolution If you grabbed photos from Facebook or Flickr, be aware that typically they will not be in their original resolution. These sites have to reduce the resolution and file size for storage. Try to get the originals for your book, as this will give you the best shot at crisp, clear prints. In most instances you will want to use photos with a minimum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. If you use photos with insufficient resolution, they may look good on screen but they will look blurry and pixilated when printed.

Review Photo Book One Last Time Hold on, you're still not done proofreading your photo book. You've proofed for grammar and typos, checked out the fonts and you are positive all images are high resolution and nothing crucial will get cut off. Look it over one more time. Look it over with fresh eyes. I once put the same photo on two pages and didn't catch it until I received my photo book. You'll likely find any such errors with a final photo book review and you will be even more pleased with your beautiful new book.
