Journey PresentationFrom the Earth to the Moon
Warning: Rockets are only studied from scientific and technical points of view.However, we must remember that the A4/V2 rocket and the Fi103/V1 flying bomb werehistorically used as war weapons. They were made by prisoners in appallingconditions, and their use caused the deaths of thousands of people in London andAnvers.This journey is aimed at pupils in the development cycle. It is based on theScience and Technology programmes: space adventure, research into measuring time,
the observation of technical objects; and the History programme: the Occupation ofFrance during the Second World War.
Sheet n°1: La Coupole: a gigantic bunkerThis sheet allows LA COUPOLE to be located on a map of Europe, from that time,
and to understand the operation of the Helfaut-Wizernes base by observing the building
and the moving model.
Sheet n°2: Hitler’s secret weapons [film • 1 blue]A comparison of two pieces of apparatus and the flying conditions allows you
to see the difference between the A4/V2 rocket and the Fi103/V1 unpiloted plane.
Please go down into the low part of the centre without going through the REX cinema(the journey may be too long) by taking the stairs to the right of the lifts and headingtowards the A4 rocket area.
The pioneers: The comparison of three great space theorists and
scientists makes you aware of the possible developments from one activity by following the
rise of a researcher: Von Braun [Zone 1]
The campaign of destruction by the V1s and V2s: [Zones
3 and 4] allows the events to be placed into the historical context and to realise thatthese rockets were weapons of war.
Sheet n°3: The conquest of spaceWhile watching the film “From the earth to the moon”, complete the table to
create a chronological timeline of the history of space adventures [Zone 5].
Rocket area: To finish this journey, you have to find some rockets in thephoto and match them with their identity cards [Zone 5].
The launch preparation room: The departure allows an
understanding of how the launch preparation room would operate.
These activities combine Science and History, the main objective being to
develop a scientific and technical culture of the fundamental aspects of today’s world,
as well as a planetary civic sense.
The visit will be extended upon returning to class by the creation of a chronological timeline of space adventures.
