TITLE: AHS- Tempe Oral History Collection DATE RANGE: 1970s-2002 CALL NUMBER: PP-OH1 LOCATION: Arizona Heritage Center, 1300 N College Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 17 linear feet PROVENANCE: Created by or for the Arizona Historical Society, Central Arizona Division. COPYRIGHT: The Arizona Historical Society owns the copyright to this collection. RESTRICTIONS: This collection is unrestricted. CREDIT LINE: AHS- Tempe Oral History Collection, PP-OH1, Arizona Historical Society- Tempe, AZ PROCESSED BY : Benjamin Findley and Linda Whitaker, 2012; updated 2018 HISTORICAL NOTE: Most of the interviews were generated by the Phoenix History Project (1975-1978) - at the time one of the largest community history initiatives in the nation. At its peak, twelve professionals and many more volunteers worked on the project. This was fueled by the fact that no history of Phoenix had yet been written. It was partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Arizona Humanities Council as well as private sponsors and organized by G. Wesley Johnson a Phoenix native and professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Oral histories were but one segment of this project which included collecting a wide range of Phoenix related, pre 1970 materials on social, political, economic, cultural, urban landscape and biographical subjects. These are contained in PP-MS 30. Over 600 individuals were selected for the interviews. They represent voluntary associations, religious organizations, ethnic groups and communities, migrations and mobility, families and household structures, educational and economic development. In addition to transcripts, most of the Phoenix History Project folders contain personal background information, brief family histories and lists of key names mentioned in the interview. Some include articles, news clippings and photographs. In the early 1990s, Arizona Historical Society, Central Division (now known as the Arizona Heritage Center) developed an oral history program to provide background for various museum exhibition themes such as WWII, transportation, water management and urban growth. Videos of related interviews and roundtable discussions are available as VHS cassettes and are listed in the AHS Audio-Visual Collection. Note that the folders of later interviews contain less background material and may not have transcripts. AHS-Tempe Oral History Collection- 1 of 41 Phone: 480-387-5355, Email: [email protected]

The Historical League embarked on their own oral history program in conjunction with their annual Historymakers™ Gala which began in 1992 and continues to the present. Files include background information, transcripts, and correspondence. Most transcripts can be found on the Historical League/Historymakers website. Note that certain individuals were interviewed years earlier for the Phoenix History Project. This offers the interesting and unusual perspective of oral histories recorded by a number of prominent individuals over time. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: The 900+ oral histories aggregated in this collection come from multiple sources and projects spanning over thirty years. Folders were generated for each interviewee as place holders whether or not transcripts were completed. The bulk of the interviews were recorded on cassette tapes, the majority of which are in good, playable condition. The collection is remarkable for its sheer size and broad sampling of topics. Organized alphabetically by surname. Originals and copies of cassettes tapes as well as DVDs are stored separately but are accessible upon request. CONTAINER LIST:
