Dear Parents/Carers This week is National Migrant and Refugee Week. I would like to acknowledge the resilience of the many families in our school community who come from such backgrounds. Inspiration is drawn from your stories and the successful new lives that you have built in Australia are truly a credit to you all. "For I was a stranger and you welcomed me" Matthew 25:35 Thank you to Mrs Williams for leading the implementation of our school learning dispositions over the last five weeks.

On Monday afternoon, we officially launched these dispositions and unveiled the symbols and banners in our central courtyard area and front office area. Come along and have a look at these permanent reminders of how our learners can ‘Sail to Success’.

Book Week Celebrations The theme for Book Week 2019 is “Reading is my Secret Power”. This is a week that schools and public libraries across Australia spend time celebrating books. Mrs White and Mrs Fiddy planned wonderful activities relating to the importance of reading.

The children looked fabulous during the dress ups and I know they thoroughly enjoyed the library rotation activities that were planned for them. Please refer to photos of these wonderful experiences later in this newsletter. Thank you to Mrs White and Mrs Fiddy for the wonderful activities they planned to celebrate Book Week this year. The excitement is now palpable with our 90 Year Celebration day so close. This special celebration occurs this Sunday and preparations are nearing completion. We are still in urgent need of volunteer help on the day. Please return the form sent home a couple of weeks ago or call the school office on 3275 2081, to let us know how you can assist.

Don’t forget, once the form is returned your child/children will be placed on the list to receive a free armband on the day. Mrs Quincey and Mrs Williams will organize rosters of volunteers and allocate times that volunteers will be required at different activities on Sunday. Please look out for these rosters as they arrive home in the coming days.

We have scheduled a working bee on Saturday, August 24 starting at 10.00am. There are a number of set up tasks to be completed. I look forward to seeing as many helpers as possible for this working bee. We look forward to a strong attendance and a wonderful celebration atmosphere on Sunday. Please note that students are required to be at the stage promptly at 11.00am for the beginning of the opening ceremony. I will call for all attendees to focus on the official part of our special day and welcome our invited guests and all community members to our fabulous school.

I look forward to seeing as many of our school community members at this special event – can’t wait! Father’s Day Stall – coming soon! Our annual Father’s Day stall is happening next Friday, August 30 starting at approximately 9am. This is a special time for the children to select something unique for the ‘father figures’ in their lives. We encourage all students to bring along their pocket money to buy something small or big for their special person. All items for sale range from 50 cents to $5.00. I pray that you all have a terrific week. May God’s blessings be with you and your families today and always! Take care and God bless always In Faith and Love Nicole Cole Principal

Religious Education Dear Families,

Last Thursday, 15th August, was The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God.

On this day, St Brendan’s community celebrated the belief Mary was taken, body and soul, into heaven. It

was a beautiful Mass and we thank Father Dan for his leadership as our Parish Priest at St Brendan ’s

Church.

St Brendan’s 90th Anniversary

Sunday the 25th of August is our exciting celebration of the 90th Anniversary of St Brendan’s Primary School

from 11am till 3pm. Please come along and be part of the fun. We will have rides, show bags, food, music

and more. We look forward to celebrating with you on Sunday.

Learning Dispositions Launch

A huge thank you to Mrs Williams for leading the learning of our new Dispositions this term. These

dispositions assist children in becoming active learners who have a positive mindset and take ownership for

their inquiry processes. The dispositions are persistent, engaged, collaborative, reflective and resilient. Our

students have embraced these dispositions and it is exciting to see them using this language in their

classrooms and the playground. On Monday Mrs Cole and the staff at St Brendan’s launched our banners in

the courtyard.

Book Week Celebrations

On Tuesday the students from Years Prep to Year Six dressed as their favourite book character and

engaged in a variety of literacy rotations. It was so much fun getting together with friends from different year

levels and learning more about the short listed books. Thank you Mrs White and Mrs Fiddy for preparing a

wonderful and engaging day.

Recycling

Pope Francis’ 2015 Encyclical Laudato Si’ asks, "What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come

after us, to children who are now growing up?" It is a call to all to care for creation: our self, others and the

world in which we live. While environmental concerns are only part of the Pope's message, it is a reminder

that we all have a responsibility towards sustainability and stewardship. Our school is continuing to take a

proactive approach in this area under the leadership of My Lyle Nash. In addition to recycling paper,

students are being educated on the recycling of items around the school. Poppers, water bottles and

lemonade containers from the tuckshop are all being collected for the ‘Containers for Change’ program.

Year 6/5 continue to collect munch and crunch scraps for the worm farm. We encourage you to continue the

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle conversation with the children.

Father’s Day

Father's Day is fast approaching! We will be celebrating our great Dads with our annual Father ’s Day Stall

on Friday, 30th August - so save the date. In next week's newsletter we will be seeking volunteers to assist

with the stall.

St Mary of the Cross Feast Day School Mass at St Pius Salisbury

On Thursday the 8th of August the students and teachers from St Brendan’s celebrated Mary Mackillop’s

Feast Day at St Pius. We left by bus at 9am and arrived just in time for morning tea. The students

represented our school with honour. Each teacher commented on how well the students from both schools

interacted with each other and were proud of the way the children participated.

Catholic Identity – St Brendan’s Community

Our beautiful St Brendan's community reminds us daily that we are not alone on our faith journey. We are

connected to our families, staff, the wider community and God. It is an honour for our families to entrust their

children's care, faith and education to us. Term 3 in our 2019 journey is a perfect time to reflect on how far

our students have come this year and how much growth we have witnessed. We as the staff at St Brendan ’s

are privileged to walk this learning journey with you and your children.
