StaxiTMThis award-winning transport chair The Staxi™ is used by large facilities such as hospitals and airports to help individuals and their companions to cover long distances. It is a theft deterrent in that the chair is not usable in a traditional sense for use at home and does not fold for transport. It is designed to allow for outdoor storage and use, carrying baggage of patients and single hand operation, allowing the opening of doors. It nests (similar to shopping carts) and features an automatic braking system and a docking system allowing multiples of units to be pushed with brakes engaged.
My involvement on this project included initial concept development, prototype construction, testing of components and liaison with a variety of manufactures. I am listed as a co-inventor and am currently receiving royalties from the sales.
The Staxi is the recipient of the Nightingale award for Product Innovation at the 10th annual Symposium on Health care Design. It also received honorable mention from Design Engineering magazine for innovation. www.staxi.com

RocketTM
RocketTM
This is the first multi directional wheelchair to receive FDA approval. It has exceptional performance indoors and maintains traction over rough outdoor surfaces. It features a unitized chassis, a unique seating adjustment frame, anti snag footrests and a tilt able armrest for egress under tables.
My involvement on this multi million dollar project included initial concept development, prototype construction, testing of components and liaison with a variety of manufactures.

These are examples of some of the prototypes and sketches I have developed while working for design companies involved with sports equipment. Some of them can be seen on the market today.
Robo Nurse
Robo NurseA new concept to help health professionals and caregivers move patients gently and safely with all the advantages of a fixed overhead lift, but without the limitations.
The powered patient lifting device features articulated gimbal and sideways mobility.Represented below is the development from concept sketch to preproduction prototype.
I was involved as senior industrial designer for concept development, prototype construction, testing of components and liaison with a variety of manufactures and other designers. There is also the development of the various slings accompanying this new lifting concept that I headed up. This has led to another patented device, “Sling-Serter” that I am listed as a co-inventor.

Digi-ClenzWith the rise of cross infection in institutions such as hospitals, the need to find a means to eliminate this threat became greater. This is a self contained, self cleaning, hand wash station requiring only a cold water supply line, 110 v, 15 amps, power outlet, and a sink or similar drain for waste water. It has an onboard UV light Sterilization system with disinfectant rinse between users. The drying air is also UV sterilized after passing through a HEPA filter. The internal rotating sink uses photo sensors to detect hands and has a no splash back drain. It is also wheelchair assessable.
My involvement on this project included initial concept development, prototype construction, testing of components and liaison with a variety of manufactures.

Snow Sedan
Snow Sedan
A joint effort between University of Toronto engineering students and myself. The intention was to create a totally enclosed snowmobile to allow passenger’s comfort while traveling in adverse weather conditions.

Kabob Kart This is an entrant to the Toronto street vendor competition. The premise was to develop carts that would be suitable to the approaching concept of serving differing food on the street than the common hotdog. I viewed the existing hotdog carts as an eyesore so created a concept that would be suitable for a range of foods including the existing hotdogs. I was intrigued with the idea of serving traditional kebobs because of the simplicity, aroma and atmosphere surrounding this food.

Sumo Robot
An event held every year at OCAD, the college I attended and now teach, holds a competition where contestants enter their creations. This is “Piece Maker” an entrant in both Sumo classic and Sumo clever and has won several times in the past. I now use the event and Piece Maker as a means to inspire my students of my Mechanics class.
The robot is a battery powered, tracked unit with an onboard compressor and actuators for battle.

Better Shield
This patented shield is intended for the health care industry to offer greater protection in a medical environment. It utilizes a formed outer region that gives more coverage in the chin area than existing masks. Other features are: one size fits all, anti fog, scratch resistant nesting for shipping and optically clear field of vision. Development was accomplished by a series of cad and hand formed vacuumed formed models for evaluation and changes. I am listed as co-inventor on this product.

Tommy Hilfiger N.Y.
Tommy Hilfiger N.Y.
A staircase for Tommy Hilfiger’s New York flagship store was built and installed by the Feature Factory team. Hand formed and CNC patterns were constructed and then used to produce FRP components for installation. The mold component shown bottom left was hand laid up epoxy over a plaster and foam plug.
The mold was then used to produce high quality vinylester FRP components for each one of the three and a half flights of stairs.
Most of the trimming and preparation for joining was done on the shop floor in the contact fiberglass facility to alleviate high costs on site, close supervision was required to ensure quality and proper fit.
My involvement was primarily assist in construction of the plug, mould and lay-up. I supervised and assisted in the construction of the finished components as they were being sent to site, acting also as a liaison between suppliers. As the safety officer, I was responsible for sourcing information and making recommendations and executing changes.

Shaw Auditorium
The Shaw discovery medical auditorium in Edmonton. This project involved several aluminum panels using innovative acrylic bonding and finished to a high quality. The panel structure consisted of .125” brake formed aluminum bonded to section rolled .125” x 2” angle and tubing.
The compound curved sections were fire retardant FRP. Precision was required to ensure trouble free fitting on site.
My involvement was assistance in construction of the metal formed components involving bonding and precision rolling of aluminum angle and tube. I inspected the finish and repaired parts prior to shipping to site.

CAD Modeling
These are a few examples of Cad models I have created in Solidworks or Rhino.
Many of the smaller projects were then produced in a rapid prototyping method such as SLA or FDM.
