The foundation of the Brilliance iCT is its state-of-the-art Essence technology.

Essence is a scalable platform featuring proprietary advances in the X-ray tube,

detector system and reconstruction engine, enabling:

Peace

Patient radiation exposure is a key issue in CT, and one that Philips takes seriously.

That’s why we instituted DoseWise, a series of advances that reduce radiation dose

without compromising image quality.

A breakthrough advance unique to the Brilliance iCT is the Eclipse DoseRight

collimator. The collimator overcomes the over-beaming present in conventional CT

through the elimination of dose at the beginning and end of helical scans that do not

contribute to image formation. Together with SmartBeam management and other

features, DoseWise reduces radiation dose without sacrificing image quality.

Cardiac CT is one of the most popular – and challenging – emerging applications for CT.

Clinicians are in need of CT technology that provides consistent, fast and accurate scans

for a wide range of patients and an ability to clearly view small, often calcified, coronary

blood vessels.

Brilliance iCT solution

All advantages of Essence technology are leveraged to meet the complex needs of

cardiac CT. Fast, non-invasive scans of the heart are produced in just 2 heartbeats.

Moreover, the Brilliance iCT can capture high-definition scans across a range of heartbeats.

The Brilliance iCT also enables an exciting new prospective acquisition method:

Step & Shoot Cardiac. Step & Shoot captures consistent, high-quality cardiac images with limited

motion artifact and an industry-leading reduction in radiation dose of up to 80%.1

Abdominal CT often involves disease conditions with small lesions that can go

unnoticed on a traditional CT. Increased resolution and reduced motion artifact are

critical to achieving clear abdominal scans to aid in quick and confident diagnosis.


The Brilliance iCT optimizes the use of contrast and enables short acquisition times

and wide coverage. Higher in-plane and spatial resolution offer excellent 3-D images,

such as the volume rendering of the abdominal vasculature, to facilitate diagnoses.

Clinical challenge

The lungs pose a unique challenge in CT: the air present in the lung parenchyma

produces a higher signal-to-noise ratio. CT becomes even more challenging in patients

with breathing problems because of difficulties complying with breath-hold imaging.


Powered by Essence technology, the Brilliance iCT can perform lung scans in a

single breath-hold, allowing a wider range of patients to be compliant. Moreover, the

high-quality, 3-D images provided allow small structures to be visualized with fine detail.

Reducing X-ray dose is an important issue in CT – particularly in children, where

minimizing lifetime radiation exposure is critical. Consistent image quality can be

difficult to achieve in pediatric patients because of CT design and patient restlessness.

For high-quality images, a powerful X-ray tube needs an equally robust detector system.

The Nano-Panel detector system was designed to provide virtually noise-free signal

conversion for outstanding image quality at low radiation doses. With this system,

the Brilliance iCT is able to see small structures more clearly.

Breakthroughs in imaging with Essence technology enable larger coverage and fast,

low-dose examinations. These advances are particularly important for coronary artery

imaging (such as Step & Shoot Cardiac), lung scans and brain perfusion studies.
