About us

About us

The Global Initiative for Exchange and Development Inc. (GIED) is a non-profit

and non-government organization established last July 07, 2015 in Cebu City, Philippines. The organization aims to promote people empowerment and connectivity through the spirit of volunteerism and building communities for sustainable development. Also the organization wants to enhance the inter-cultural interactions of people around the world through exchange and development focusing on a three-point agenda to wit: (1) Global Citizenship and Voluntary Service Exchange; (2) Global Education, Service Training and Capability Building; and (3) Global Social Development Initiatives with Partner Communities. Under each agenda are specific programs, activities and projects that focuses on social issues like education, health and gender sensitivity, children, youth and women participation in society, peace and rights-based issues, IEC for DRR inclusive for persons with disabilities, training and capability building related to the environment, language barrier and other impact social development projects and activities in marginalized communities. GIED is a full member of the Network for Voluntary Development in Asia (NVDA), an official partner of International Cultural Youth Exchange Federation (ICYE) and a guest organization of the Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organizations (ALLIANCE). It is also registered with the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) as a Volunteer Service Organization, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as a Social Welfare Organization and the National Youth Commission (NYC) as a Youth Serving Organization of the Philippine Government. BBB Foundation is a non-stock, non-profit organization that envisions communities where people are educated, healthy and with good sense of well-being. Betty Bantug- Benitez with a mind forever teeming with bright, benevolent and beautiful projects for the Filipino children and worked hard for the fulfillment of these plans up to her final days in this world. Inspired by her unwavering commitment to labor with love for the children of today and tomorrow, the foundation joins Betty in making her bright, benevolent and beautiful dreams, a reality.

Two decades ago, this woman of commitment was honored with the creation of the Betty

Bantug- Benitez Foundation, barely three months following her passing in June 1982. Bearing

her full name, the foundation aimed to continue her work, reflecting her compassion and

love, especially for children.

The Home for the Malnourished and Sick Children aims to help children who are sick

through assisting them in medical aspects, giving them medicines and providing them the

shelter where they can be taken care of. This organization was built 33 years ago under

the congregation of the Missionary of Charity. It is run by the nuns (Sisters of Mother

Theresa).

The Livingstone Christian Academy (LCA) is a non-stock, non-profit learning institution committed in providing quality education that is grounded on sound moral principles.

Being a part of LCA family is a step taken on the provision of a Christ-Centered Education for the children and youth. It is dedicated and committed to provide quality and Bible Based Curriculum to students and a partner in preparing for their future. It is situated in a peaceful community where public transportation is readily available. It is only about 10 minutes’ drive to the nearest mall and hospital facilities.

Barili is a 2nd municipal income class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 73,862.

Patupat Elementary School is located in Brgy. Patupat which is one of the barangay of Barili and it is located 67 kilometers south from Cebu City. It is accessible to all kinds of land transportation. It has a tropical climate and seldom visited by typhoons. The barangay is one of the few barangays in Barili awarded for having constituents.

PADS works closely with various partners and stakeholders on programs that aim to promote deaf human rights and volunteering for the deaf community, increase participation of the Deaf in electoral processes and enhance skills access and opportunities of the Filipino Sign Language (FSL). It is part of the “Break the Silence” (BTS) Network in the Philippines, a campaign strategy started by the Stairway Foundation Inc. to advocate for child sexual abuse prevention. PADS plays a vital role in the BTS network as it brings in a unique, much-needed expertise and program experience on working with deaf children and adults. The PADS Office and its partner areas are conveniently located near town/city centres. Public transportations are also readily available to visit department stores/malls, hospitals, schools, historical and cultural landmarks and other leisure areas.

ORGANIZATION/COMMUNITY CONTEXT

The Philippine Self-Help Foundation is a non-government

organization (NGO), registered with the Securities and

Exchange Commission. Founded in January 1987 in Bacolod

city, Negros Occidental, its primary mission is to empower

the poor through livelihood loan assistance.

The PSHF also gives medical and housing grants to individuals

and families who have no other recourse, and educational

opportunities to poor students.

Saceda Youth Lead is a recognized NGO on youth empowerment and development by the Department of Education, and Commission on Higher Education. It has empowered more than 200,000 youths and teachers in all its programs and activities in the Philippines and the ASEAN region.

SYL believes that through our youth and our teachers we will see the future of our country and through their good deeds we will prosper as one nation. It believes that education is the backbone of our economy and it needs greater partnership and collaboration with other institutions to empower the Youth to become better citizens by providing them opportunities in leadership, community service and social action. It believes in the ripples of modest beginnings that societal transformation must start from within and that involves training and awakening of the self; given the chance and guidance, one can become an agent of change for God and country.

Kawit is a barangay of Municipality Medellin which is situated in the

outlying area of the said town. Medellin with a population of about 44,860

and its 19 barangays belong to the partly urban areas in the Philippines.

While some of modern urban structures, some others, especially

those which are seated in the outlying areas, remained rural.

The term Kawit comes from Cebuano word “kawit or kaw-it”, a bamboo

tube about two and half feet long with a wooden hook fastened at the top.

This is being carried by gatherers of coconut wine. Because of its tasty local

wine people from neighboring places used to visit the place just to quench

their thirst. Now, the barangay is the most progressive place in the town.

It has a public market and its own fire and police substation.

ORGANIZATION/ COMMUNITY CONTEXT BPCFI establishes, maintains, and operates as agency primarily for the marginalized and

less privileged families of Mabolo, Cebu City. For the past several years, members and

families of BPCFI have grown in numbers. Some migrated to different places in Cebu, while

the houses of some of the families were demolished and thus they were forced to transfer

to other places. In spite of these obstacles, the relationship between these families and

BPCFI stood firm through communication, especially through home and school visitation.

At the start, BPCFI operated in the sitios and barangays of Cebu City, specifically Barangay

Mabolo. As the years went by, its work spread to different municipalities of Cebu and the

different islands of the Visayas.

The beneficiaries of BPCFI are mainly children and youth from age 3 to 24 belonging to

underprivileged and under-served communities and families. These children and youth are

part of the BPCFI Educational Programs, and about 85 percent are given support through

the Support at a Distance Program (SAAD).

In recent years BPCFI expanded its services to cater to a wider range of clientele that covers not only those children and youth who are part of the SAAD Program. BPCFI, through its services, reached out to the parents of the children and youth and their communities, providing some health services and skills training services.

People are devoted to farming, the main source of livelihood of its constituents. Situated in the heart of Nueva Ecija Province in the Philippines is Kasapi sa Pag-Abot ng Pangarap (Partner in Achieving Aspirations/Dreams) LFCI-KPPI, an institution dedicated to promote entrepreneurship and work while caring for the

people’s health, education, and the environment. This institution has 9,341 members

in which 95% are women. Most of the members main sources of livelihood or income are farming, tricycle (motorized wagons) driving and Sari-Sari (small household) stores.

The First High School for Hearing Impaired (FHSHI) is a high school in Cebu City to serve persons with hearing disabilities since 1982. It is in fact that in so far there are limited colleges, or even government schools that offer relevant educational opportunities to persons with disabilities as hearing impaired, visually impaired those with learning disabilities, the physically handicapped. The school commits itself in promoting education of the children with special needs through relevant lifelong learning skills in order to give them equal opportunities with other students in regular schools. The school has been engaging in bringing the classroom back to life of the children with special needs. All teachers engaged in Active Learning Process employing the cooperative learning procedure, all in sign languages. Computers are connected to the web / internet brings the students interest back in the classroom. We have been aiming to win the learners back to school as place of fun, friendly and fostering atmosphere for learners to be functionally literate.

ORGANIZATION/COMMUNITY CONTEXT

PADS works closely with various partners and stakeholders on programs that aim to promote deaf human rights and volunteering for the deaf community, increase participation of the Deaf in electoral processes and enhance skills access and opportunities of the Filipino Sign Language (FSL). It is part of the “Break the Silence” (BTS) Network in the Philippines, a campaign strategy started by the Stairway Foundation Inc. to advocate for child sexual abuse prevention. PADS plays a vital role in the BTS network as it brings in a unique, much-needed expertise and program experience on working with deaf children and adults.

The PADS Office and its partner areas are conveniently located near town/city centres. Public transportations are also readily available to visit department stores/malls, hospitals, schools, historical and cultural landmarks and other leisure areas.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT

Brgy. Sab-ahan is a forest reserve area, inhabited with 7,078 people making it the most populated Brgy. in Bais (NSCB, 2007). It is where Meralco Foundation, Inc. (MFI) established a Family Farm School (FFS) whose main goal is to transfer agricultural technology and develop skills of upland farmers by providing a techno-demo farm for abaca and coffee farming. On its 16 years of existence, it also provided access to free agricultural based education for High School students. Through concerted efforts of LCC, MFI, FPD and other stakeholders, the establishment of a Sustainable and Accessible Community College that the program hopes to achieve shall be sustainable, viable and local specific to the real situation and needs of the upland youth, their family members and the community.

The Province of Nueva Ecija is comprised of 5 Cities, 27 Municipalities and 849 Barangays. It has a population of 2.15 Million that is projected to reach 2.35 Million in 2017. As an afterthought, the population of male outnumbered female by gender ratio of 1:2 in accordance of number of males for every 100 females. People are devoted to farming, the main source of livelihood of its constituents. Situated in the heart of Nueva Ecija Province in the Philippines is Kasapi sa Pag-Abot ng Pangarap (Partner in Achieving Aspirations/Dreams) LFCI-KPPI, an institution dedicated to promote entrepreneurship and work while caring for the

people’s health, education, and the environment. This institution has 9,341 members

in which 95% are women. Most of the members main sources of livelihood or income are farming, tricycle (motorized wagons) driving and Sari-Sari (small household) stores.

The First High School for Hearing Impaired (FHSHI) ia a high school in Cebu City to serve persons with hearing impaired disabilities since 1982. It is in fact that in so far there are limited colleges, or even government schools that offer relevant educational opportunities to persons with disabilities as hearing impaired, visually impaired those with learning disabilities, the physically handicapped. The school commits itself in promoting education of the children with special needs through relevant lifelong learning skills in order to give them equal opportunities with other students in regular schools. The school has been engaging in bringing the classroom back to life of the children with special needs. All teachers engaged in Active Learning Process employing the cooperative learning procedure, all in sign languages. Computers are connected to the web / internet brings the students interest back in the classroom. We have been aiming to win the learners back to school as place of fun, friendly and fostering atmosphere for learners to be functionally literate.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT

Hospicio de San Jose de Barili is a government facility established to provide for care and support for the indigent invalids and incapacitated and helpless person. Admission requirement is 60 years old and older, with no communicable diseases and not receiving any pension.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS

Sociable and Team player

Have a bigger heart for the disadvantaged and less privileged people

Flexible, open minded and able to adopt local life situations

Independent with limited supervision

Team player and with Sense of Community

Will commit fulltime work while in country

VOLUNTEER’S TASKS

Assist staff in cooking and feeding the elderly

Washing the dishes and doing the laundry

Assist in the organization’s other activities

Provide personal assistance to the elderly

Mingle with the elderly/volunteers and other partners without prejudice and to share also his/her experiences from the country where she/he came from.

NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS TO BE HOSTED IN THE PROJECT

HOST SITUATION Living with host family (expect to have a shared room with your host sister or brother)
