  • SPECIAL FEATURE

Fisheries Situation Report, April to June 2019

The total volume of fisheries production during the second quarter of 2019 reached 1.1 million metric tons, which represents an annual growth of 0.4 percent from its level in the same quarter of 2018. Across the three subsectors, production from commercial fisheries and aquaculture showed decreases of 2.4 and 0.3 percent, respectively. Municipal fisheries production, on the other hand, exhibited an increase of 4.3 percent.

Of the seven major species, skipjack, seaweed and milkfish showed contractions in production compared with their levels in the same period of previous year by 5.6 percent, 2.9 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively. However, the other four major species exhibited production growth, namely, yellowfin tuna (33.4%), roundscad (10.7%), tiger prawn (4.6%) and tilapia (0.6%).

The estimated volume of production from commercial fisheries was 280.8 thousand metric tons, which indicates a decline of 2.4 percent compared with its previous year’s level of 287.7 thousand metric tons. The subsector comprised 24.6 percent of the total fisheries output.
