February has only 28 days, but we worked 31 days for this month. Focused on our goal of becoming a Powerful, Influential, and Relevant organization, the National Board is exerting the full effort to seek every opportunity to improve our services to the members and to bring PSME in the forefront of Philippine industrialization.

The love month started with a full turn-over of the PSME Building to the current board. After so many years or probably decades, the PSME 2nd National Board Meeting was held again at the home of the Filipino Mechanical Engineers, the PSME Building at 19 Scout Bayoran st. in Quezon City. I am happy to inform you that the PSME Building is now back in the custody of the National Board and with some renovations and minor repairs, we will be utilizing our building as National Office and training center soon.

We also had a meeting with DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña and discussed how DOST and PSME can work together to bring better service to our country in terms of science and technology and the Mechanical engineering profession. As a result, we are currently working on some partnership agreements with DOST for the common good of our nation, our members, and the Filipinos in general.

We had cluster meetings with chapter presidents and discussed the plans and programs that will boost our services to our members. We visited a number of chapters for their induction ceremonies and also took the opportunity to listen to their needs.

Serving PSME is voluntary. We are not paid for our service to the society. I appreciate how the members of the National Board, the committee and other volunteers shared their resources in terms of time, energy, and even financially. These are all for the love of the Mechanical Engineering Profession, and for the love of PSME.

I encourage the members to join us and be part of this volunteerism. We need more servant leaders and volunteers to achieve the big tasks ahead of us.

Be on board and help us keep this momentum going!

Leadership Corner

by: Ransam S. Pirote, PME/DTM What is Leadership?

Leadership according to the dictionary is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Susan Ward, a book author, defines Leadership as the art of motivating people or a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. It is the act of engaging the hearts and mind of ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results. According to Peter Drucker, a well known

management consultant, “The Challenge of Leadership is to get ordinary people to do extraordinary things.” Leadership is not about the next election, it’s about the next generation. The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) leadership accepts this challenge and is optimistic that ordinary members could contribute extraordinary actions to achieve the goals in line with the vision of PLATINUM 2022 where we aspire that PSME will become Powerful, Influential and Relevant to the needs of the community, country and the world.

Sheryl Sanberg, COO of Facebook said “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure the impact lasts in your absence’’. In 2002, together with other PSME-Saudi Arabia members and friends, we chartered the PSME-SA and friends

Toastmasters Club and had worked together to improve Leadership and Communication Skills of our members. Seventeen years after, this club continued to excel and created impact to the Professional life of our members and other Professionals in Saudi Arabia and Middle East .

PSME, in response to the need of members, created the Advance Leadership and Management Academy (ALMA) as a counterpart of Advance Training Center (ATC).

This committee will provide the training needs of members and non-members related to Leadership, Management and Entrepreneurship. Currently this committee is chaired by yours truly, with Engr. Carlito E. Alpay, Dr. Eduardo Malagapo, Engr. Jonathan San Juan and Engr. Felipe Lu as members.

GMM made to at least lessen the burden of earning CPD points to renew a professional license.

Significant amendments in the new IRR is the decrease of CPD units to renew a professional’s license, noting that from 45 CPD units it went down to 15 CPD units every three (3) years.

Among the provisions to be observed during the transition period are: Filipino professionals working overseas are not covered by the CPD requirement, Newly licensed professionals shall be exempted from CPD requirements for their first renewal, CPD councils shall reduce the required CPD units to a minimum which shall not be more than 15 CPD units, all seminars attended by licensed professionals should be recognized as CPD units and shall be accepted as valid for the renewal of their licenses. Professionals who renewed their PRC ID’s by signing an Undertaking shall only comply with the required 15 CPD units pursuant to the Resolution.

Enter Engr. Eduardo E. Fornes, 2019 PSME Interim National Director for CPM Affairs and the current general manager of EEF Enterprises, who proved that challenges have no place in a man with his game face on and an armor of determination.

In 1982, the young Eduardo Fornes took a course on Automotive Mechanic in Northern Mindanao School of Arts and Trade (NMSAT). In 1988, he graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Visayas and passed the board exam in 1989. Engr. Fornes became a Professional Mechanical Engineer (PME) in 2010.

Aside from being the General Manager of EEF Enterprises that specializes in waterproofing, various

mechanical works like design and installation of air-conditioners, fans and blowers, fire protection, wastewater treatment plant and other water management for almost 10 years, he is also a PME and consultant of other companies.

A very passionate person, he quipped that the source of his motivation are his family and the PSME. He also shared that he achieves a sense of accomplishment when he shares and partakes his knowledge to fellow engineers.

While Engr. Fornes is very proud of his life achievements, he never forgets that he started from the bottom and strove to reach his goals.

When he initially joined the PSME, he noted that he truly enjoyed being a member. But he realized true fulfillment when he became an officer to serve the Society.

He emphasized that “when I became an officer I’m always inspired to learn and dare enough to translate new ideas into concrete projects.”

As the 2019 Interim National Director for CPM Affairs, what are your plans and goals for the future of the PSME?

“I would organize the CPMs and give them orientation on what to do and give them enough knowledge thru seminars and put up a review center for them.”

What life advice, that you live by yourself, can you give to your junior ME colleagues?
