Servants of the Servant

Paul’s letter to the PhilippiansPart 4

Page 2: Philippians 4

“How is it possible that the Gospel should be credible, that people should come to

believe that the power which has the last word in human affairs is represented by a man hanging on a cross? I am suggesting that the only answer, the only hermeneutic

(explanation) of the Gospel, is a congregation of men and women who

believe it and live by it.”

27 Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner

worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or

only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and

one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

Page 4: Philippians 4

28 Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God himself. 29 For you have been given not

only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him. 30 We are in this struggle together. You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that

I am still in the midst of it.

Page 5: Philippians 4

2 Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his

love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and

compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with

each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and

purpose.

3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an

interest in others, too.

5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Page 7: Philippians 4

6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God

as something to cling to.7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave

and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,

8 he humbled himself in obedience to God

and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Page 8: Philippians 4

9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor

and gave him the name above all other names,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

12 Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important.

Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep

reverence and fear. 13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to

do what pleases him.

Page 10: Philippians 4

14 Do everything without complaining and arguing, 15 so that no one can criticize you.

Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full

of crooked and perverse people.

Philippians 1: 27 – 2: 15

And I will continue to rejoice. For I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of

Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance.

Philippians 1: 18-19

4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember,

the Lord is coming soon.

Page 21: Philippians 4

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which

exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as

you live in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4: 4-7

Words and Pictures from Last Week• Kate M. - God had been speaking her through one of the

worship songs we sang. As we sang those words, the Holy Spirit had come across the room.  It was an encouragement/promise to wait and the Holy Spirit will come.

• Sheilah - had a picture of an iris.  The tuba of the iris needs to be put on the surface of the earth (not under it) in order to grow.  As the sun shines on it the root grows down.  Needs the sun to grow.  As we position ourselves

in the right place i.e. in God's presence we will grow.

Page 24: Philippians 4

Words and Pictures from Last Week• Becca - picture of a tornado swirling around.  In the

same way we are often caught up in lots of busyness.  However, when you move into the eye of the storm it is still and peaceful.  We need to take time and to be still; to wait on God in the midst of busyness.

• James - picture of a tap dripping.  It was open enough for a tiny bit to get through.  God is not a dripping tap but a fountain, a river etc.  We may have been going through a dry patch recently but we need more water to survive.

• Anne - a picture of a group of people walking along like the Israelites walked along.  Instead of God being at the front of them, he was at the side of them.
