Philippines lies some 800 km (500 mi) off the southeast coast of Asia, encompasses and archipelago of 7, 107 islands.
The Philippines lie in an area of great tectonic instability – the ring of fire that surrounds the Pacific Ocean –and within the path of violent tropical storms
The archipelago, which extends 1,770 km (1,100 mi) north to south, is roughly triangular.
The Philippine Trench, 10, 500 m (34,500 ft) deep, runs along the eastern coastline.
