Philanthropy and Phi Mu
Philanthropic work has been a priority for Phi Mu Fraternity since its inception. While chapters are encouraged to support local philanthropies through volunteerism, Phi Mu has an official national philanthropy to which all chapters contribute. By giving both time and financial support, Phi Mu keeps its pledge “to lend to those less fortunate a helping hand.” Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH): Phi Mu has adopted the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals as a national philanthropy at the 1986 National Convention. Just as the charter members stressed helping women and children, Phi Mu chapters today carry on this tradition. Since its adoption, the Fraternity has contributed over $8.5 million, as well as, countless hours of volunteer work at area hospitals. Phi Mu Foundation: Founded in 1956, the Phi Mu Foundation is the philanthropic and educational arm of Phi Mu fraternity. The Foundation administers all donations to the national philanthropy, grants funds for educational opportunities, establishes programs, and awards over $100,000 in scholarships annually. Several types of projects result in a successful social service program for a chapter. Collegiate chapters are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities as well as plan fundraising activities. There are many types of volunteer projects that will help the community and promote Phi Mu. Fundraising: Many chapters have the resources to organize a successful fundraiser for Phi Mu’s national philanthropy,
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The suggestions below will help you plan great projects for your
chapter.
Where can I find ideas for possible fundraisers?
There are many ways you can find ideas for possible fundraisers.
Contact the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals coordinator at the Children’s Miracle Network
Hospital in your area. This person is willing to work with you in developing projects to benefit
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Contact Phi Mu’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals chairman. Her name and address are in the
current Officer’s Directory. Your chapter president should have a copy of the directory.
You can also find the name, email and phone number of your area philanthropy manager. Log onto
the Officer Portal for her contact information.
Review resources available on Phi Mu’s Leadership Center. (http://lc.phimu.org)
Review new information and resources available on www.phimufoundation.org.
I need to prepare a chapter development or educate my chapter about Phi Mu philanthropies.
1. Contact the CMNH Coordinator at your local CMN hospital for information about CMNH such as videos,
pamphlets, balloons, etc. she can give you information about your local telethon and ways you can
help.
2. The Philanthropy Chairman should maintain an ongoing file about the philanthropies. At each
Convention and Leadership Conference, CMNH provides information for the delegates. Additional
information is sent throughout the year. All information should be kept in a resource file.
We have a great idea for a fundraiser. How can we make sure it is a successful project?
1. Appoint an effective chairman. This is the key to a strong project. Choose a leader who is really willing
to push the project.
2. Organize the project early and plan ahead. Delegate so that every chapter member has a small job.
Establish a written timeline so each person knows when the projects must be accomplished.
3. Make it an annual event. The community will recognize Phi Mu in conjunction with the project.
Merchants will donate money readily if they have regular contact with Phi Mu.
4. Evaluate the project and plan improvements for the next year. Prepare detailed notes and instructions
for the next chairman. Try to anticipate an answer for every questions she may have.
Where do we send the money we raised?
All money should be sent to the Phi Mu Foundation at the National Headquarters so that your chapter
receives credit for your contributions. For contributions to Children’s Miracle Network, make checks payable
to CMN, not Phi Mu or your chapter. Cash and coins should be converted into a money order. Do not send
a check from your chapter unless it is a donation from your chapter. Send checks and money orders with a
CMNH Remittance Form (available through the Leadership Center) to Phi Mu National Headquarters to record
the amount of your contribution.

Your check will then be forwarded to the local hospital.
20 Ways to Support CMNH
1. Do your research! What is your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s name? How far is it away from
your chapter? Do any of your chapter member’s parents or any Phi Mu alumnae work there? This
information with be helpful to you for planning hoe your chapter will be involved with the children’s
hospital.
2. Contact the hospital! Many of the hospitals have Child Life Specialists, Community Liasons or Coordinators
for Fundraising. Call the hospital and explain how your chapter is interested in getting involved. Write
down everything you can remember from the conversation with the representative, including his or her
name, best time to contact him or her, and general things you discussed.
3. Ask for “safe toy lists” or “needed donations lists.” Some children’s hospitals can only accept certain
types of physical donations. Many children’s hospitals will provide this around the holidays.
4. Don’t forget the positive PR. Remember to include the children’s hospital if you send out holiday cards.
Your chapter could send goodies for the nurse’s stations and thank them for the work they do with
children.
5. Volunteer! With the high caliber of services the premier children’s hospital offers and the severity of
illness the children face, many hospitals have high standards for actually volunteering with the children.
They sometimes require things from volunteers (such as background checks, vaccinations, and
commitment to volunteering a certain number of hours) that you, as college students, are simply unable to
provide. See if the children’s hospital is doing any fundraisers themselves that you can be involved in.
Some chapters have volunteered as servers at banquets or booths sponsored by their local children’s
hospital. Other chapters have repainted playrooms or participated in hospital wide parties for the children
during the holidays.
6. Get out in the community. Are there any other organizations on or off campus that are having fundraisers
for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals? Can your chapter attend these to show your support?
7. Sense of pride. Maybe your chapter could collect information, newspaper articles and pictures of your
chapter volunteering for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and have a special place in your house,
lodge or chapter room where you can display it.
8. Become a Miracle Maker! Does your chapter donate $1,000 to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals? If
so, you will reach Miracle Maker status.
9. Host campus philanthropy events or fundraisers. Many chapters have their own annual fundraisers to
benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Contact your area philanthropy manager if you need
assistance in planning these events. Make goals each year to be more successful than the last.
10. Sponsorship. Contact other corporate sponsors of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals when you are
hosting a philanthropy event. They may be able to donate items, match the amount you raise or provide
support in some other way. Because they are corporate sponsors sometimes they need to clear things
through their corporate offices, so it is best to contact them as soon as possible.
11. Wear the gear. Have your chapter make Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals jerseys or letter shirts to
wear during your philanthropy activities. Your chapter could also make a general t-shirt showing your
support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals that you can wear to multiple events. Buttons, pins,
bracelets can also be worn by your members to show your support!
12. Educate others. Be sure to explain why Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is important and special
during your family weekend, alumnae events, Phi Mu Day, and even recruitment! Speak of how the
partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Phi Mu is strong and what your individual
chapter does to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
13. Internship. The “Happy” Parker Lowden Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Internship is offered to a Phi
Mu collegian. The internship provides a stipend for hours of volunteer service in connection with a
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Development Office, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals or
Children’s Miracle Network National Headquarters. The service may take place during the school year,
summer or interim session. Visit the Phi Mu Foundation website to find more information on the criteria
needed and application specifics.
14. Visit! Many of the children’s hospitals will arrange for chapter members to take a tour of the hospital.
Find out how your chapter can arrange a tour at least once a school year. This can be a huge motivation
factor for your chapter!
15. Help support organizations. Does your children’s hospital have a supporting organization that you can
volunteer with? A Ronald McDonald’s House? Dance Marathon? Telethons? Does your local alumnae
chapter host a fundraiser? How can your chapter help?
16. Invite. Is your philanthropy kid friendly? Chapters that host philanthropy events can contact their
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to invite patients and families (current or past) of the hospital to
come and participate, help judge competitions, or just share their story with participants.
17. Chapter programming. Have a chapter development program about Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals. Invite someone from the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to come and speak about
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. If any of your chapter members were a patient at Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals, see if they would like to share their experience.
18. Network. Use Leadership Conferences, National Convention, Facebook and the Leadership Center to
network with other Phi Mu chapters to see how they are involved with Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals. Check out resources available online.
19. Encourage individual support. Remind chapter members when local sponsors are selling Miracle Balloons,
or support IHOP Pancakes Day and DQ’s Blizzard Day. Your members can participate individually or as an
optional sisterhood event. Recognize sisters that have gone above and beyond to help with Children’s
Miracle Network Hospitals both in your chapter and in your community.
20. Become connected! Every chapter supports Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in their own unique way.
ANYTHING your chapter does to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is living the creed and
exemplifying Phi Mu’s ideals. Keep up the good work!

Celebrity Support
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has enjoyed celebrity support since the beginning. In fact, they were
founded in 1983 by two celebrities: John Schneider and Marie Osmond. Since that time, hundreds of
celebrities have appeared on our annual Telethon or offered their support in other ways. Their celebrity
friends visit sick kids in hospitals, record PSAs, attend events, Tweet and Facebook about us, perform at our
annual Celebration, and – most importantly – help spread the message that Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals need your help.

To whom it may concern:
Hello, my name is Lindsay Schich. I am the current Philanthropy Chair for Phi Mu Fraternity at
Westminster College. This spring we are hosting an event on campus called the Battle of the Greeks. It’s a
battle of the sexes style game show where one representative of each Greek organization on campus compete.
We are hosting this event to raise funds for our philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Our chapter works locally with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Each year we hold many events and
fundraisers to help this cause. We would love your help and support. In addition to the game show, there is
going to a Chinese auction. To make this possible we will need fantastic prizes to give away and we are hoping
that your business could help by donating a gift, making a monetary donation, or allowing us to advertise in
your place of business. Anything you are willing to donate will be greatly appreciated. Your business will be
recognized at the time of the event by having your logo and company name printed on our sponsor board for all
of the campus to see. Thank you for your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to
call or email me.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Schich

Remitting Fundraising Receipts
Phi Mu’s official philanthropy is the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. All chapters are required to conduct
at least one fundraising event for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals each school year. Due to non-member
income restrictions imposed on not-for-profit organizations, including Phi Mu and its chapters, it is Phi Mu
policy that funds raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals must be remitted directly to Phi Mu
Foundation. These funds are NOT deposited into chapter accounts. Please use the following procedures for
collecting and remitting funds raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals:
All Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals receipts are remitted to Phi Mu Foundation which will record
chapter fundraising and then forward the donations to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for
distribution to your Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. NEVER send your fundraising receipts to
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals directly.
All donations for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals must be kept separate from chapter operating
and savings accounts.
Money collected for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals may not be payable to a chapter.
Donors should be asked to make checks out directly to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Fundraising should be structured to minimize cash donations; any cash received must be carefully
controlled and immediately converted to a money order made payable to Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals.
No later than two weeks after each fundraiser, remit all funds collected to Phi Mu Foundation, 400
Westpark Drive, Peachtree City, GA 30269
Use the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals donation form to list all checks and money orders being
submitted.
Enclose a letter with the name and date of the event, the chapter raising the funds (so you get credit!),
and your Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s name.
Chapter may not keep Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals funds for its own purposes! Money raised
for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals goes to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the
children.
If you have any questions on fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals or how to remit
the funds raised, contact the Phi Mu Foundation Business Office on 770-632-2090

Phi Mu Stand Up Stand Off Guidelines
Hello!
Thank you for participating in Phi Mu’s philanthropy event, Stand Up Stand Off. All proceeds of the competition will
benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, specifically Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. You will have control of your
routine’s content, as long as it stays within the following guidelines:
Do not personally attack campus groups or individuals. It is okay to generalize about the campus as a whole, but
not a specific group or individuals.
No harmful bashing. Think, “Would you want someone else to say this about me?”
No racial slurs or continuous usage of vulgar language. Phi Mu wants the event to be enjoyable for the entire
audience. There is a line when it goes from being entertaining to potentially awkward and offensive.
No overly explicit content. See previous explanation.
Have fun!
These guidelines were set up to ensure everyone involved will have an enjoyable experience. If there is any
questionable content during the routine, members of Phi Mu Executive Board reserve the right to ask you to stop your
routine.
Thank you!
I, ____________________________________, have been informed of the guidelines and expectations of Stand Up Stand Off. I have had the opportunity to have all my questions answered. I agree to follow the guidelines stated above.

BE SURE TO RESERVE A RAIN LOCATION IF YOU ARE FUNDRAISING OUTSIDE! Check to see if the porch overhang outside of McKelvey (closer to Shaw and near the Student Affairs Office) is feasible.
Reserve table from the Physical Plant Main Office from 11 am – 1pm on
the day of the fundraiser Take inventory of the supplies you do have. Make a list of the supplies
you still need. Send a list to the Alumni Relations Chair. Also send out donation letters as soon as possible for companies to
donate supplies or money. A list of corporations and companies are included in the binder.
Ask sisters if any of them work in a restaurant and would be able to order bulk items off of them at a cheaper price.
One month before Tell sisters when and where the fundraiser will be held Send event information to the PR Chair and Wed Admin
2-3 weeks before Check your inventory again and go shopping for the items you still need. Remind sisters about the fundraiser Confirm table reservations with the Physical Plant Ask the Treasurer about the cash box and extra change

sisters repost that one or make their own.
The day of fundraiser Have sisters meet in the chapter room 15-minutes before you want to start setting up to have them help you carry supplies over
Use sidewalk chalk to decorate in front of the stand Have Sodexo fill both containers up with ice and water (ask one of the
cashiers for assistance) Gauge how many people are coming over to the stand and decide
whether to make both containers. If you only need one container, make it in the glass one.
Take pictures!! CHEER AND BE HAPPY!
After the event Thank everyone for all of their help Post on the event page to thank students for their support Give money raised to the Treasurer so she can send it into the Phi Mu
Foundation
Helpful Hints
Do not schedule the fundraiser on URAC. The majority of McKelvey is booked and the TUB tables will not
be available in their usual locations.
If you can’t find the pink lemonade flavored baked goods, you could look online for a recipe or use any
type of baked goods to bring in some more money.
Have your committee help you bake a night or two before the fundraiser
If you have class until 11:30, ask one of your committee members who doesn’t (or another exec member)
to meet the sisters in the chapter room and be in charge of bringing everything over.

Helpful Hints
Test your questions on independent males and your committee to gauge if the questions need to be
revised.
How the event works
o It’s a Battle of the Sexes style game-show
o There are questions most girls would know the answers to and those questions would be asked to
the guys. There are questions most guys would know the answers to and those questions would be
asked to the girls.
o The male host would ask the girls questions and the Phi Mu goddess will ask the guys their
questions.
o For the first round, each contestant will have 10 seconds to answer the question. If that question is
not answered correctly, the next contestant of the opposite sex will have a chance to answer the
question. If the question is still not answered, the next contestant on the originally side will have a
chance to answer. If the question is still unanswered, the question will be thrown out.
i.e. boy-girl-boy or girl-boy-girl
o It would be best to prepare 20 guy related and 20 girl related (40 questions in total). Most times,
they will only be able to answer 15 questions for each gender.
o There is a short 15 minute intermission.
o The second round consists of group questions. Each team will have 20-30 seconds to answer the
question. If the original team is not able to answer the question, the question is thrown out. The
types of questions are the same as round 1.
Sample questions are included
o There is a short break where the hosts announce the winners of the Chinese auction.
o The third round consists of challenges, typical female tasks for the guys and typical guy tasks for the
girls. The judges rate the performances from 1 to 5 for each contestant.
o There is a final question/challenge (i.e. pickup line challenge when representatives from each side
compete to see who runs out of pick up liens first)
o Round 1 questions are worth 1 point and round 2 questions are worth 2 points.
