• This presentation covers:– Basic definitions of the game.– Which throw should I use? – How to cut.

– Keep in mind – there are a million situations and a million varieties. Presented here are ‘typical’ throws and cuts.

o Handler – the person throwing the disc

o Mark – the person guarding the handler

o Force side – the side the mark forces the handler to throw to. E.g force

‘home’ or ‘away’.

o Break side – the other side!

o Dump – a person stationed in the area behind the handler who is always

ready to receive a short easy pass. ALWAYS look for your dump (dump

the

disc) if you have no throw within about 3-4 seconds. The dump will likely

be standing behind the handler on the break side. MAKE EYE CONTACT

with the dump and throw the disc GENTLY!

Useful Definitions of the game:Useful Definitions of the game:

oSwing – Toss the disc laterally across the field. Great option - typically

underutilized by newbies!

oStack – Where receivers stand while waiting to make a cut. Can be vertical

(parallel to long axis of field), horizontal, and in some cases, diagonal.

oChilly – RELAX. Usually indicates that handlers should slow down, NOT try to

throw a difficult passes or a be tempted to huck the deep pass. Calmly

dump or swing the disc.

oStrike – When someone yells strike, if you are the MARKER, IMMEDIATELY

switch the force. Look behind you, when the threat is gone, switch the

force back. The STRIKE call is made when a receiver is making a cut to the

force side but there is no defender on them.

oPoach – Someone who is poaching is purposefully clogging the cutting lane.

If you are being “poached”, your defender is not near you – immediately

make a great cut and yell POACHED to get the handlers attention!!!

oNO BREAK! When someone yells “NO BREAK”, it means a receiver is trying to

get open on the BREAK side (behind your back if you are marking the

handler). As the marker, make sure you are forcing on the correct side – not

straight-up - Jump around and make it tough to get the break-side throw off.

oClog – Someone is ‘in the lane’ and preventing others from making cuts. Get

back in the stack!

oClear – After a cut, sprint back into the stack – otherwise you will be clogging

the lane.

Throwing basics:1.Throws are typically made to where the receiver is going, not to where they are (i.e. LEAD the receiver). 2.When possible, throws should curve gently INTO the receiver (see image). Assuming the receiver is a step or two IN FRONT of their defender, a curvy throw is hard to knock down or intercept! This is shown later on in the presentation.

•Backhand throws , like forehand throws, should be thrown in FRONT of the receiver and curve INTO the receiver if possible.

Break-side cut: How???•Keep looking right, do a couple of fake pumps and look as if someone is REALLY making a cut to the right.•IF defender takes the bait and shifts to force side, then take your backhand throw.

•Yes, the animation looks silly, the point is that the handler is doing lots of faking!

•An alternative is a low-release inside-out forehand – but risky if you don’t know how to throw one!

Compare these three throws:

CurvyCurvy

Startingpositions

Finishingpositions Defense can’t reach disc

In all three cases, the defender will try to take shortest path in order to cut off the throw. The receiver will try to beat the defender to the ‘outside’.

StraightStraight

Startingpositions

Finishingpositions Defense has a much better chance of stopping pass

BackhandBackhand

This is why break-side pass is TOUGH!1.Easy to ‘D’ the backhand

Startingpositions

1. 2.

The force has changed (notice altered positions of marker and handle). Receiver tries for the ‘break side’ pass.

2. Hard to throw the forehand

Where to cut?Think PHOTOGRAPHY: If you can see the camera, the camera can see you!(So, if the handler can see you, you’ve put yourself in the right place!)

THREE things to look for as you make your cut:

1.Cut to an open spot (no defenders)2.Cut to where the handler has a CLEAR THROW to you.

• That usually means COMPLETE YOUR CUT!3.…and here’s the fun one – if your defender is poaching in the lane, then:

A. take off to the break side (shown later in presentation) ORB. make DEEP cut (force side) to pull your defender out of the lane.

• COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TEAMMATES. If the other team regularly keeps a person poached in the lane, incut STRAIGHT AT THEM fast, then make your deep cut. This allows someone else on your team to make an in-cut at the same time. The poacher can’t cover two people simultaneously.

Cutting basics:1.FAKE. Get your defender running the wrong way or ‘off balance’ THEN make your real cut.2.Complete your cut

This is where you want to wind up.

Get your defender running the wrong way then cut in behind them.

• Note - you can also run STRAIGHT at your defender, get them off balance and make your cut in or out.
