Missouri Youth Make Moves in Game of Leadership

Leadership and independence were the name of the game for ten Phelps County youth who attended Missouri’s 4-H Teen Conference at MU last weekend. They joined 255 youth ages 11-13 from 68 Missouri counties for workshops led by older State 4-H Council teens. “It’s a time to experience the thrill of independence in a safe and inclusive setting away from home,” said Kendra Swee, 4-H Youth Development Specialist. “They build life skills, make new friends, and experience Missouri 4-H on a statewide scale.”

The theme of Teen Conference was Make Your Move in the Game of Leadership. Workshops included an escape room, creating art packets for a youth crisis center, and learning about other countries from international exchange students. Youth also explored the habitats of native bees through a 4-H Ag Innovators Experience sponsored by Bayer, and celebrated 103,752 meals collected by 4-H’ers during the 4-H Feeding Missouri initiative. The keynote speaker was Dr. Lupita Fabregas, Missouri 4-H Program Leader, who delivered a message about recognizing our own diversity and connecting across cultural lines.

“4-H connects youth to the larger world and gets them engaged in their own hometowns,” said Bradd Anderson, State 4-H Youth Specialist.

Only one club report will be printed per newsletter unless the newsletter

covers more than one month. If submitting photos, please submit only one

per month and they will be used if space is available. Due the 25th of each

month. Keep them short!

The Evening Star 4-H Club met March 5, 2010. Braxtyn Crider led the Pledge of Allegiance and Blake Gilliam led the

4-H pledge. Twenty-two members answered roll call by telling their favorite color of the rainbow. Alex Watson spoke

about theatre make up and gave three examples by making Dakota Townley look old and Livi Townley look like a deer

and she gave Ranger Townley a black eye. She talked about costs of make up and how you can learn to do it. The club

sang “Happy Birthday” t o March birthdays and “If You’re Happy and You Know It” led by Livi Townley. Tara

Murphy led the group in playing “Ninja”. Members of the photography project, Hope Pierce, Landon Throop, Braxtyn

Crider, and Deven Throop, showed their recent photos and explained what they used to get the pictures they did. Activity

reports were given by Travis Hall and Eli Evans on the livestock quality assurance meeting and by Blake Shields on

the Valentine party and the cookie plate making. Project reports were given by Daniel Cook-Poultry, Rabbits, and

Crafts, Elyssia Cordes-Dogs and Vet Science, Landon Throop-Photography 1, Deven Throop-Photography 2, Alexa

Damewood-Crochet, Catriona Murphy-Sewing, Braxtyn Crider-Bowling. The club voted to donate $20 toward the

basket for the silent auction at the Extension Council dinner. Shirts were taken. The club talked about the concession

stand at the girls soccer games and serving at the Extension banquet. Announcements included camp dates and a

reminder of what is needed for donations to the Humane Society at the next meeting. The next meeting is April 2,

2019. Braxtyn Crider, Club Reporter

Country Kids 4-H met at the Lucy Wortham James Elementary on March 11, 2019 at 6:30pm. The pledge of allegiance

was led by Lane Engelmeirer and the 4-H pledge was led by Logan Nothnagel. We had a few demonstrations given:

Braelyn Wagner showed a diagram of a meat goat of which parts you can eat, Clarie and Sophie Deluca showed us a

recipe on how to make and bake chocolate chip cookies and Logan Nothnagel brought in is beautiful hen Rosie and

showed us how he cleans her and gets her ready to show. Caleb and Kate Stackeljahn reported out about the poultry

meeting that had been held on Saturday March 2. Raegan Witt, Kate Strackeljahn and Collie Collins reported out

about the horse judging contest that was held on February 21&22, where Rasegan Witt was in the top 10 for total points

for juniors. Sorry we were not in the February newsletter but here is what took place: Sergeant Mike Mitchell of the

Missouri State Highway Patrol came to speak to members about internet safety, and cyber bullying. He was very

informative and taught us a lot of what not to do and the dangers behind these reasons. We ended our meeting by

singing Happy Birthday to our March birthdays led by Livi Herron. Our next meeting will be at Lucy Wortham James

Elementary on Monday April 8, 2019 at 6:30. If you would like more information on our club please find us on

Facebook under Country Kids 4-H. Braelyn Wagner, Club Reporter

Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program Last year at this time, we announced the Missouri Shooting Sports Ambassador program. We selected 16 youth members from across the state having at least one representative in each region. Some of our goals in this program are to:

Further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building.

Continue and expand their involvement in 4-H Shooting Sports beyond the shooting skills and competitive events.

This group has spent several hours planning an event that we are very excited to announce. The planning and preparation for this event fits the goals of this program very well. Please see the announcement below from one of our ambassadors.

Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports- 1st Annual End of the Year Awards Ceremony Mark your calendars now! For the first time in Missouri Shooting Sports history an end-of-the-year awards ceremony will be held to recognize shooting sports participants for their achievements while competing at the 2019 State Shoot. The top 10 individuals and the top three teams will be recognized in every discipline and age group. This event will put the excitement back into participants receiving their awards! We know that receiving an award in the mail isn’t thrilling and we look forward to cheering on all winners as they receive the recognition they deserve.

This event will be facilitated by the Missouri State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassadors. Shooting Sports donors will be invited so they can see the large impact they have on our program. All state shoot participants and their families are welcome to attend. More details and a registration information will become available closer to time.

This event will be held at the Mathewson Exhibition Center on the Missouri State Fair Grounds, in Sedalia, MO, on November 2, 2019.
