CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR PHD SCHOLARSHIPS ON INNOVATIONS AND MARKETS FOR LAKE VICTORIA FISHERIES: DANIDA IMLAF PROJECT 2015 - 2018
Background
Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in collaboration with Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST); in Tanzania; and University of Copenhagen (UCPH) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Denmark is undertaking a collaborative research project titled “Innovations and Markets for Lake Victoria Fisheries (IMLAF)”. The project is supported by the Danish Development Agency (DANIDA) and is carried out in the Lake Victoria basin of Tanzania. Its main objective is to catalyze the socio-economic growth through innovative methods for production of safe and high quality products and by-products from Nile perch and sardines, and expansion of national and international markets. Post-harvest losses and presence of biological, physical and chemical hazards that reduce the quality, safety and marketability of fish and fish products are addressed. Value addition and development of new processed products and by-products from the Nile perch and sardines as well as effective business models are being investigated.
Call for Applications
We are pleased to announce a call for applications for four (4) PhD scholarships within the field of risk assessment, value addition and marketability of fish and fish products and by-products in the Lake Victoria basin. The aim of the scholarships is to support higher education and training of Tanzanian scholars working or with potentail to work in research and academic institutions. Selected PhD candidates will register as full time PhD students at the SUA or NM-AIST in Tanzania and will have an opportunity to take PhD level courses and specialized laboratory analysis and other types of training at Universities in Denamrk .

Sokoine University of Agriculture
I Identification and characterization of biological hazards in water, sediments and Nile perch. The focus will be on bacterial pathogens and will involve conventional and DNA based analytical techniques.
II Identification and characterization of chemical hazards in water, sediments and Nile perch. Focus will be on POPs, heavy metals and endocrine disruptors including pesticides and hormones that will be analysed using
using the GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS, and Duo AAS based analytical techniques among others.
III Development and validation of innovative fish processing technologies. Focus will be on value addition and development of innovative processing technologies for fish products and by-products from Nile perch and sardines.
Nelson Mandela African Instyitute of Sceince and Technology
I Establishment of market opportunities and development of business model. Focus will be on development of effective business models and exploration of opportunities for domestic and international markets of fish products and by-products.
Eligibilityi. Holders of MVM, MSc, MPhil or other equivalent masters degree in relevant fields related
to risk assessment, fish health, food safety, handling and processing for positions I, II & III at SUA.
ii. Masters of Science in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Enterpreneureship and other related fields for position I at NM-AIST. Candidate with advanced econometrics as a quantitative analytical skill will have an added advantage.
iii. Highly motivated candidate to develop a scientific career and capability to complete PhD studies within 3 years.
iv. Intention to undertake research on risk assessment, value addition and marketing of fish and fish products in the lake Victoria basin.
v. Not already enrolled in a PhD programme.vi. Willingness to conduct long-term field studies at studies sites along the Lake Victoria;
work in a team and a strong ambition to accomplish the research goals of the project.vii. Good academic records /transcripts.
viii. Excellent communication skills.ix. Good command of spoken and written English.x. Perspectives on future use of PhD skills for teaching, research and extension.
xi. Full time availability from June 2015 for a period of 3 years.
How to applyPotential applicants are hereby invited to submit the following: (i) motivation letter, (ii) curriculum vitae ( including information on academic carrier and specialization) , (iii) academic transcripts and certificates, (iv) three names of academic referees whereby at least one of them being the immediate work supervisor, and a 2-3 pages concept note on one of topics listed above against respective institutions. The concept note should contain an outline of the problem statement and rationale for the proposed study, objectives, methodological approach and expected outputs. Applications MUST reach focal persons in the respective Institutions by 15th
April 2015. Successful applicants will be notified by 30th April 2015. Where necessary, interviews with independent panellist will be conducted in the selection process. ResponsibilitiesThe PhD fellows’ tasks will be to study and report on their selected research question within the context of this project depending on the area of research. The interconnected sub-studies will require intensive interaction with the programme leader, research collaborators, supervisors, and other PhD and MSc students in the programme. The progress of the PhD fellows’ work will be evaluated annually or as will be deemed necessary by the Supervisors and/ or the Project Coordinator. It is expected that each of the PhD fellows will publish at least four papers in International peer reviewed journals.
Financial mattersThe scholarship will cover tuition fees, a monthly stipend and research costs based on successful deliverables.
