ThePhDprogrammeinEconomicsatCa’FoscariUniversityofVeniceisafour-yeardoctoralprogrammeanditstandsasacorecommitmentfortheDepartmentofEconomics,whichwasawardedthelabelofDepartmentofExcellencebytheMinistryofEducationandResearch(MIUR)witharelevantfunding.AgreatpartofthisfundingisusedtosupportthePhDprogrammeofEconomics.

ThePhDprogrammeprovidesstudentswithtoolsandinstrumentstoconductoriginalresearchtowardsadoctoraldissertationinvariousfieldsofspecialisationineconomicsandfinance.Theseincludemicro-andmacro-economictheory,econometrictheory,microeconometrics,appliedeconomics,publiceconomics,politicaleconomy,quantitativefinance,mathematicalfinance,operationsresearch,mathematicaleconomics,behaviouralandexperimentaleconomics.

ThePhDprogrammeisofficiallyrecognizedbytheItalianMinistryofEducationandResearch(MIUR)andhasbeenawardedthecertificateof“accreditamento”.Attheendoftheprogrammestudentsshouldhaveachievedanynecessaryskillstoperformhighlyqualifiedprofessionsineconomicsorfinanceinuniversitiesand/orpublicorprivateorganizations.

ThepolicyandtheactivitiesofthePhDprogrammeareplannedandorganizedbythePhDDoctoralFacultyBoardwhichismadeupbytheCoordinatoroftheprogrammeandbyothermembersnominatedbytheDepartmentofEconomics.

General organisationThePhDinEconomicsisafour-yearprogramme,entirelytaughtinEnglish.Itoffersadvancedtrainingineconomics,econometricsandfinanceandaimstoprovidehighlyselectedstudentswiththeabilitytoconductoriginalresearch,enablingthemtopursueacareerinacademiaorineconomicandfinancialorganizations.

Duringthefirstyear,studentsattendanintensiveprogrammesubdividedintofourtermsofadvancedcoursesineconomics,withexamsandassignments.Theprogrammestartsinmid-SeptemberandendsinJulywiththecomprehensiveexams.Duringthefirstyear,studentsarealsorequiredtoattendDepartmentseminarsandperformresearchactivitiesasindicatedbytheDoctoralFacultyBoard.Attheendofthefirstyear,onthebasisofgradesandoverallachievements,theBoarddecideswhethertoadmitstudentstothesecondyearoftheprogramme.

Atthebeginningofthesecondyear,untiltheChristmasbreak,studentsattendresearch-orientedcourses(withassignmentsandexams).Uponthecompletionofthecoursesprogramme,byDecember,studentshavetochooseanddiscusstopicsfortheirdissertationwiththemainsupervisorandpresentageneraloutlookattheirfirstMonitoringSession.Workonthedoctoralthesisissupervisedbytwosupervisors;atleastoneofthetwomustbeaffiliatedwithCa’FoscariUniversity.Afterhavingarrangedthetopicoftheirthesisandagreedonthemainsupervisor,second-yeardoctoralstudentsstarttoworkontheirresearchproject.AllstudentsareexpectedtoparticipateactivelyinDepartmentseminarsandotherresearchactivitiesorganisedbytheDoctoralFacultyBoard.Fromthesecondyearandbeyond,theyalsocarryoutteachingactivitiesforundergraduatecourses,organisedbytheDepartmentofEconomics.PhDStudentsareencouragedandfinanciallysupportedtoparticipateininternationalconferencesandworkshops.Fromthesecondsemesterofthesecondyearandbeyond,theycanorganiseaperiodofinternationalmobilitytoconductpartoftheirresearchataninternationalinstitution;suchperiodisagreedwiththesupervisorandmustbeapprovedbytheDoctoralFacultyBoard.

Theprogrammeendswithafinalexamconsistinginthethesisdefence(“viva”)infrontofaCommitteeofatleastthreeprofessorswithexpertiseinthefieldofthedissertation.TheCommitteedecideswhetherthestudentdeservesthetitleofDottorediRicercainEconomia(PhDinEconomics).

ThePhDProgrammemustbecompletedbytheendofthefourthyear.

Lectures for the courses Optimisation, Probability Theory, Microeconomics I and II,Macroeconomics I and II EconometricsarejointlyattendedbytheQuantitativeEconomicMasterstudents.PhDstudentscarryoutadditionalreadingsandexercisesthroughoutthecoursesessionspecificallypreparedforthembythecourseprofessor.Syllabusandscheduleforeachcourseareavailableonthepage“courses”ofthePhDineconomicswebsite.

Examination policy and Requirements PhD students must sit at the first exam session (primo appello) of Optimisation,Probability Theory,Microeconomics I and II,Macroeconomics I and II Econometricsat theendofeachteachingperiod.For thecoursesofExperimental Economics I and II and Microeconometrics, the examination policy is specified on the syllabus of thecourses.Noretakesareadmitted.In July 2020, PhD students are also required to sit in the comprehensive exams ofMicroeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics. These exams are scheduledbetweenJuly1standJuly15th2020.Thecomprehensiveexamswillbeevaluatedwithapass/failpolicyandtheFacultywillexaminetheresults,togetherwitheachstudentatthemonitoringsessioninJuly.Theevaluationoffirst-yearPhDstudentsisbasedon:- Courseworkandresults- Participationtoresearchevents- GeneralacademicbehaviourTogain admission to the second year,astudentisexpectedtohaveregularlyattendedtheDepartmentseminarsandtohaveanaverageGPAover3.00(B)andapassgradeinallthecomprehensiveexams. English language - C1 levelAverygoodlevelofEnglishlanguageknowledge(oralandwritten)isrequiredtoallPhDstudents to be able to write a PhD thesis and to present in international conferences.The PhD students are expected to carry out C1 English courses throughout their PhDprogrammeinordertomeettherequiredqualitylevelofEnglishwrittenandoralfluency.

Besides a possible period of visiting abroad, second-year students are encouragedto participate in workshops, conferences, and other research activities organised byvariousnationalandinternationalinstitutions.Allactivitiesmustbeagreeduponwiththesupervisor and approved by the Doctoral Faculty Board. Information on administrativeprocedureslinkedtothisactivityisavailableinthe“Mobility”section.

Bytheendof thesecondyear,studentsareassignedasecondsupervisor.Thesecondsupervisorisjointlychosenbythefirstsupervisorandthestudent;she/heneedsnottobeaffiliatedtoCa’FoscariUniversity.

Requirement of the PhD thesis

Atypicaldissertationconsistsofthreechapters.Co-authorshipisadmittedprovidedthatthedissertationcanbefullyrecognizedasapersonalworkofthecandidate.Thequalityofthedissertationmustbehighenoughtoentertheinternationaljobmarketforeconomists.

Academic honesty and research ethics

The PhD programme in Economics at Ca’ Foscari University is committed to academichonesty and research ethics. Plagiarism of any kind, from copying in an exam to avoidquotingthesourcesofyourfindingsisnotaccepted.The PhD thesis is verified by an anti-plagiarism software before the consignment intotheUniversity’sthesisarchivesandallprofessorsoftheprogrammecarryoutfrequentcontrolsonpapersandessaysproducedbyPhDstudentsthroughouttheyear.TheDoctoralFacultyBoard,accordingtothegravityoftheinfringementsoftherulesonacademichonestyandresearchethicswilldecidesanctionsuptotheexclusionfromthePhDprogramme.

Teaching or equivalent activities (40 hrs)

The University PhD regulation requires that every PhD student carries out during eachacademicyear40hoursofunpaiddifferentformsofteachingassistantshiporequivalentactivities.ThisdecisionwastakenbytheRectorandwasapprovedbytheBoardofthePhD.Anyotherpaidteachingactivitycanbecarriedoutoncethe40hoursarecompleted.Teachingorequivalentactivitiescanbedeclinedasfollow:

-TeachingAssistantship(esercitazioni) forcoursesat thebachelorormaster levels+relatedofficehours.ThePhD/DepartmentmakesacallforinterestinMayeveryyearto inform the PhD students on which courses require a teaching assistant.The PhDstudentwillmakearequestandtheDepartmentwillassignstheTAinJune.TeachingAssistantsarerequiredtocontacttheprofessorresponsibleforthecoursetoagreeonwhatisexpectedandfillinanonlineregisterattheendoftheTA;TAswillreceiveanevaluationoftheirperformance.TheTeachingAssistantisrequiredtoteach5exercisesessionsof1h30’eachin5consecutiveweeksoffer2hours/weekofofficehoursforstudentsduringthecourseandatleast2hoursbeforeeachexamsession(moreorless14officehoursintotal)andserveasproctorduringthefourexamsessionsthroughouttheacademicyear.

Mobility

1. Study abroad periodStudyandresearchperiodsinaforeigninstitutionmustbediscussedwiththesupervisorand authorised by the Doctoral Faculty Board well in advance before departure. Studyabroadperiodsmustbecompatiblewithteachingobligations,potentialconflictsmustbediscussedwiththePhDCoordinator.Astudentwhoisplanning–withsupervisor’sagreement-toleaveforthestudy/researchabroadperiodisrequiredtoinformviaemailtheCoordinatorandtheSecretariatoftheProgramme (supervisor must be included in the communication) at least 2 monthsbeforeexpecteddeparture.Thestudentwillprovidecompleteinformationondestination,duration and research agenda of the period abroad. BOMOPAVThisisajointinitiativeoftheDepartmentsofEconomicsoftheUniversitiesofBologna,Modena-Reggio Emilia, Padova, and Ca’ Foscari Venice. The BOMOPAV is a one-dayworkshop,whichtakesplaceinspringofeachyear,thelocationrotatesamongthepartneruniversities.The meeting involves presentations by two young researchers of each Department,which are discussed by (more) senior researchers of another Department.
