Description of the Research Area

Industrial production in Europe accounts for the 16% of the European GPD and is a keydriver forinnovation, productivity and job creation. As stated in the 2014-15 road map of the PPP Factory ofthe Future "future factory will be clean, highly performing, environmentally friendly and sociallysustainable". This research area focuses on improving the performance of the industry of thefuture through the innovative application of technologies, processes and methods to the designand manufacturing of industrial products. The entire life cycle of the product is considered and inparticular:

R&D&I activities for product and process innovation•

product ideation and development•

manufacturing process investigation, optimisation, planning and control•

manufacturing system design and planning•

product service and disposal•

Hence, all the activities required to transform ideas into final products making use of zero defect, affordable, personalised, and eco-efficient manufacturing processes are integrated andinvestigated within the context of a highly competitive and globalized world from prototyping tomass production. PhD candidates working in this area will be involved in research activities thataddress the above targets through projects possibly involving other universities and researchinstitutes, as well as Italian and international companies interested in the same topics.

There are 7 available scholarships in this area:-  1 generic-  5 thematic (to be specifically selected during application procedure)-  1 interdoctoral (to be specifically selected during application procedure)

€ 1325.0In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

In modern industry applications and in the relatedresearch activities image-based systems play afundamental and increasingly widespread role, allowing todevelop more efficient, quick and reliable handlingsystems, inspection applications, quality control andprocess monitoring. In these ambits the main keywords ofIndustry 4.0 are a very high level of automation, re-configurability and, at the same time, speed and reliability, aimed at optimization of production lines, to improveprocess efficiency. These concepts lead to theimplementation of vision systems able to operate indynamic conditions and with a highly reconfigurablestructure to match the evolution of the processes to bemonitored. This research, partially supported by the ItalianMinistry of University and Research (MIUR) by the PRINgrant 2017HENS3L_003 (3DYNAMIC4.0), is aimed at thedevelopment and metrological qualification of 3D vision-based measuring solutions for industrial and researchapplications in harsh conditions.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The accuracy and reliability of vision-based 3Dmeasurements in harsh environments is sometimes stilllow. In particular, in dynamic 3D measurements withmeasuring system mounted on a drone, motion blur andnoise significantly affects the measurement uncertainty. Inthis framework, the research is aimed to study in a

systematic way the effect of dynamic acquisitionconditions on 3D image-based measuring systems and toexplore suitable processing methods able to compensatethe effects due to dynamic acquisition conditions, thusimproving the uncertainty of stereoscopic 3D vision-basedtechniques.

Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months)

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

Cardiac arrest and heart attack are caused by irregularpropagation of the electrical signal in the tissue or by areduced oxygen supply. At least one billioncardiomyocytes are damaged during a heart attack, thusgenerating scars. These in turn block the electrical signaland spontaneous tissue contraction, increasing the risk ofcardiac arrest. As there is no cure today, the therapeuticapproach calls for heart transplantation in the most acutecases. The evolution of additive manufacturing (AM) ofbiological tissues drives change in regenerative medicine:3D bioprinting consists of depositing stem cells layer bylayer in a bio ink, using geometric paths that replicatethose of natural tissues. Bioprinting can therefore enableinnovative solutions for replacing scarred cardiac tissueby removing issues of donor biocompatibility and openingoriginal therapeutic paths. The project addresseschallenges in cardiac tissue bioprinting: i) developingmodels for simulating cardiac electromechanics withrespect to the characteristics of the bioprinted tissue, thussupporting biodesign for AM; ii) identifying new solutionsfor smart 3D printing of multicellular and vascularizedtissues that replicate the identified designs without cellsdamage. This research develops and uses mathematicaland numerical models to support new solutions for thedesign and optimal (customized) bioprinting of heart
