To celebrate our 15th year of PHAT!buzz, we are doing a Where Are They Now series. fifteen years on, Darling P is still “Shaking the Mic”. He was our very first Cover Artist for PHAT! Magazine, way back in September 1999.

Pb: Kenya was so surprised to see you Perform at the 2014 MCSK Awards in October. Where have you been for the last 15 years?!DP: I can’t say that I’ve been completely out of the Industry. It’s just that I haven’t had, what everyone would define as, a Hit single. I wasn’t around; but even when I was abroad, I was still active in my Music. jua Cali and Nonini worked with me, when I was out of the Country. I also worked with Nigerians, Sudanese and Liberians. I don’t think there was a Kenyan artist who was as Industrious, as I was at that time. While still away at School, I got the opportunity to perform with amazing Artists; such as Awilo Longomba and 2face idibia.

Pb: So where did you School?DP: I grew up in Embakasi and Kayole neighbourhoods, in Eastlands, so I went to School at Edelvale and then to Mwangaza Primary School. Thereafter, I went to Gatubi Boarding School in Kirinyaga and then on to Wandura Boys School in Muranga. For my Tertiary Education, I went to Australia - at an Aboriginal College, called Niriba, in Sydney.

Pb: Your Style is Unique: What do you call it?DP: I dubbed my Music Comic Hip-Hop, as I can both

Sing and Rap. I introduced the Genre in Kenya. My sound is also Afro-fusion and Contemporary.

Pb: in your eyes, how has the Kenya Music industry changed over the past 15 years?DP: The Industry has really Grown! Artists are being paid some really good Money now. I mean look at the likes of jaguar! Also, back then Tedd josiah and Bruce Odhiambo were so hard to get hold of, but now there are so many Studios where one can Record! However, we also need to appreciate our Artists, like they do elsewhere. The likes of Tupac hadn’t been in the Industry for 10 years, but look at how widely Respected he is. Kenyans love the Current, but often forget the Past. It’s also still hard to distinctly recognise Kenyan music. We have an uphill task of establishing a unique Musical Identity.

Pb: What Recognition have you received?DP: Matata Vibes Awards in 1999/2000, as Best Hip-Hop Artist. Also, Best New Artist at florida 2000. I even went to the Lakeside (Kisumu) and got more Applause than the likes of Gidi Gidi Maji Maji, on what was considered as their Home turf.

Pb: Have you been Supported in your Music?DP: Not really. In Kenya, people only come to Support you, when you’ve already made it in the Industry. It’s hard for someone to spot Talent and build you up. Tedd josiah really helped me, alongside Gidi Gidi Maji Maji. Also David Muriithi and Myke Rabar, who were Partners with Tedd then at Audio Vault; before he went solo as Blu zebra. We started Performing at Benson & Hedges’ Gold & Tones Concert, even before my Music was Released - because they really liked it. Tedd could see Talent from a far and Invest in it.

Pb: Why was your debut Single: 4 in One, such a Hit?DP: I was introducing a new Style, that wasn’t seen in Kenya - Comic Hip-Hop. I also used Accents and Dialects, from different Kenyan communities; that appealed to an Audience of the Young and the Old.

Pb: Who inspires you?DP: I like the Sounds produced by Sauti Sol and jaguar - I was actually there when he Released his very first Song. Gospel artist: Bahati, is also doing well; and so is Wyre. I really look up to DK and Kamaru, as well as Teddy Kalanga and Kasongo. Internationally, I admire the work of P Diddy and Dr. Dre - primarily because they’re Entrepreneurial, as well as great Musicians.

Pb: You said you haven’t been as Quiet as we thought, so What do you have for Kenyans?DP: There’s some stuff I’ve been working on for a while, which is now ready. There’s one Song I want to Release, by early January. It will be a new Style, boasting something different. I call it Kapu-Githi.

The stylish, sophisticated and talented: Pierra Makena, came to the Kenyan capital only after High School in Meru.

Best known as an Actress on Citizen TV’s popular teen show: Tahidi High, Pierra has further scaled the heights of Fame to become one of the most revered Ladies in the Kenya Entertainment Industry.

The Video Deejay, Actress and Media Personality was called upon, by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, to Act in Tausi and Kisulisuli. Eventually, spreading her creative wings, she enrolled at the Homeboyz Deejaying Academy - where she learnt most of what she’s well-known for today.

Last year, Pierra also starred in a Ghanaian film: When Love Comes Around, playing the role of Didi, alongside seasoned Actor: jim iyke.

The Romantic Comedy revolves around a self-centred, materialistic Girl, whose dream was to Marry into a rich Royal Family. The Film received an Africa Movie Academy Award Nomination.

In July this year, Dj Pierra went on Tour to the United States of America, alongside Superstars such as: Cecile from jamaica, Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz and i-Octane of jamaica. This A-Meru-Can performed in Washington D.C, Atlanta, Seattle and New jersey.

When not on the Decks, Pierra has a Philanthropic side to her; often visiting Children’s Homes across the City, spending time with the Kids and Donating to various Causes.

“When not Deejaying or Acting, I like to spend time with Students. I try to Empower them, because I was once Empowered too”, she’s often said.

Jimmy Dludlu Fan Page

Story by: Kevin Oyugi Photo courtesy: Jimmy Dludlu Fan Page

South African jazz Legend: jimmy Dludlu, debuts in Kenya this Month!

Ever since he picked up his cousin’s home-made Guitar and started teaching himself, at the age of 13; South Africa’s jimmy Dludlu has been perfecting his skill for the past 35 years.

jimmy’s career firmly took off in the mid-1980s; with Milestones such as performing at the Independence Celebrations of Botswana, during 1985. He has also performed with a host of other Southern African bands, like: impandze, Kalahari, Satari and Thomas Mapfumo; as well as Jamaican artist: Trevor Hall.

During 1991, the Jazz Guitarist was a Founding Member of The Loading zone, which backed other Musical greats, such as: Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela (who he’s still Best Friends with) and that late Brenda fassie.

A year later, Papa Wemba spotted the Band during their Namibian Tour, and invited them to a series of Shows in Central Africa. This sparked off a flurry of Performances across the Region and the Continent; after which, jimmy went on to a Jazz Programme at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music.

jimmy released his debut Album: Echoes of the Past, in 1997; for which he received: Best Newcomer and Best Contemporary Jazz Album, at the South African Music Awards.

Now with six Albums to his name, jimmy Dludlu describes himself as a Musician and a Music Educator, who is passionate about the African continent and the Music that is churned out of it.

Mr. Dludlu has listened to some Music by Kenyan artists: Eric Wainaina and Sauti Sol, which he likes; but generally has not had much exposure to Kenyan music, so he hopes to meet some other Stars when he visits. He is also working on a new Album, which he promises will have some interesting collaborations.

jimmy Dludlu and his C-Base Collective band is set to perform at the Safaricom jazz Lounge in the Safaricom indoor Arena at Kasarani, on friday 5th December 2014, from 6.30pm.
