BELONGING

We welcome new disciples to our

parish communities. If you live

within our parish boundaries, which

is our mission field, then you are

already a member. It is still

important that you register at the

Parish Oce or during registration

weekends so we can communicate

with you throughout the year. We

are here to help you meet Jesus

Christ, grow in holiness, and fully

participate in a life of prayer.

Please call or stop at either parish

oce, or speak with Fr. Schuster.

We are disciples together!

FIRST COMMUNION 2020

Dear First Communicants:

As fellow disciples of Jesus Christ in the Catholic

Church, we are praying for you on the day of your

First Holy Communion. Pease always remember:

1. Jesus is God! He walked on this earth and died

so you can be free from sin and death.

2. Jesus promised to be with you always.

3. Jesus keeps his promise in the Eucharist just

like he told us he would in the Holy Bible.

4. The Eucharist is the Real Presence of Jesus.

5. Always come to Communion with a clean heart.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

What is a Parish Leadership Team?

The role of the Parish Council is to provide leadership in five specific areas. These areas include worship,

education, living justice, stewardship, and evangelization. The role of the Finance Council is to provide

leadership and accountability concerning the parish’s financial resources. The Finance Council includes

the two elected Parish Trustees, who are also legal agents of the parish according to the State of

Wisconsin. The Bishop is the president of our Finance Council, while the Pastor and Trustees carry out the

interests of the Bishop on a local level. A School Board is an advisory board to the Pastor as he and the

Principal utilize the gift of education to further the mission of the parish.

These various boards meet once per month at most. They are part of the structure of the Church as it has

evolved since the time of the apostles and the disciples in the communities that comprised the early

Church. Unlike other local Christian churches, these boards are not legal decision makers (other than the

Trustee positions). In other words, the boards/councils hold irreplaceable advisory and steering functions.

As your pastor, I am currently working with a spiritual group of people from Michigan (ACTS XXIX) to

implement a leadership team within our parishes. This team does not replace the various councils listed

above. This team would primarily be a small group of people (2-4 non-staff members) who love to pray,

and who understand discernment in the Holy Spirit. Their primary responsibility would be to pray with the

pastor and assist him in understanding God’s plan for these parishes. God is the architect of these

parishes above all! I am currently praying to St. Therese to reveal who these leaders are in our parishes.

Have you noticed that the rate of change in the world has been insane? What about the rate of change in

our own local area and in our parishes? Too often, by the time our councils meet, too much has happened

and we are already playing catch-up. The leadership team would meet weekly to discuss the ways that I, as

pastor, am dealing with specific events during the week. This team has a high level of input to me, and

they need to challenge me, confront me, correct me, and help me discover the will of God in specific

situations. They do not hire or fire people, nor do they change things within the parish. They do help me

bring more to the table when I arrive at the various council meetings. They do help everyone to know that

Fr. Schuster does not think up solutions on his own (I rarely do), but that his leadership comes from prayer

and consultation with the Holy Spirit.

The use of a leadership team is not just another layer of meetings. This approach to being a parish would

need to be integrated into everything, it affects everyone, and all people need to be connected to the

spiritual things that will flow from this group. This will change the culture and the flavor of the parish in

ways that make it so we cannot turn back. Some of our staff will be asked to be part of a three day retreat

in August to pray with this new development and start to see how the whole parish staff will also become a

team. Without a leadership team, and a team approach within our parish and school staff, a pastor might

experience burn-out, and leadership within the parish risks losing its connection to the Holy Spirit.

SAINT STATUES ARE BEING

DEFACED AND DESTROYED

As Catholics, we should be aware of the

disturbing trend in our country to

topple over monuments that tell the

story of our country’s history, even if it

is an imperfect history. Please read the

excellent response written by the

Bishop of Madison, Wisconsin, found at

the St. Mary Parish website. Pray for an

end to this destruction!
