Summary

A three week exploration program was carried out on behalf of Solitaire Minerals Corporation on the Kukagami and adjacent mineral claims in the Sudbury mining district in July 2000. The purpose of this exploration program was to test Nipissing Gabbro intrusive rocks for their Pt/Pd potential, in the light of recent mineralization discovered in the area by Pacific Northwest Capital in the Janes and Dana Lake Townships.

Fieldwork consisting of geological sampling and prospecting in the Kukagami property revealed anomalous Pt/Pd results with up to nine times background. Although results from the Kukagami property are generally low in Pt/Pd geochem, favorable geology is inferred to the north of presently exposed stratigraphy.

Introduction

This report (Phase 1) deals with a preliminary investigation into the exploration potential of platinum group metals (PGM) in the Wanapitei and Kukagami Lakes area of northern Ontario, within Ontario Mining Division #70-Sudbury. Platinum-palladium mineralization recently located by Pacific Northwest Capital in the Janes and Davis townships, northeast of Sudbury is thought to be associated with the intrusion of 2.2Ga Nipissing Gabbro sills and laccoliths. A three week exploration program was carried out on claims held by Solitaire Minerals by Dahrouge Geological Consultants, Edmonton, Alberta.

The phase l exploration program was intended to sample Nipissing Gabbro sills throughout claim blocks in Scadding, Davis, Rathbun, Kelly and McNish Townships. In the course of the program, additional ground, optioned by Solitaire Minerals within Macbeth, Mcwilliams and Gibbons Townships, was also explored. This report solely deals with aspects of the Kukagami Property whose units are being grouped for assessment purposes.

Location and Access

The Solitaire Minerals claim blocks consist of 7 properties including Kukagami, Insect Lake, Sturgeon River, Doon Lake, Bad Lake and Boland's Lake properties. The claim blocks are located in Scadding, Davis, McNish and Rathbun Townships east of Wanapitei Lake and located approximately 50 km northeast of the city of Sudbury. Additional claim blocks optioned by Solitaire Minerals during the course of the initial program are located in Macbeth (north of McNish Township) and Mcwilliams and Gibbins Townships. Each of the claim blocks is generally accessible via Highway 17 (the Trans Canada Highway) and secondary, gravel roads. Access to the McNish Township Sturgeon River property and Macbeth properties was assisted by boat along the Sturgeon River. See Figure 1.

Claim status

Relevant information regarding each property/claim block is listed below in Appendix l and a list of itemized expenditures is listed in Appendix 2.

Regional Geology

Nipissing gabbro of northern Ontario extends from Sault Ste. Marie through the Sudbury region to Cobalt and are dominantly located within the Huronian Supergroup (sedimentary rock suite), lying north of the Archean-Proterozoic uniformity. These intrusions range from a few hundred meters to over a thousand meters in thickness and have been interpreted by Lightfoot and Naldrett (1996) among others as open ring structures, cone sheets and sills.

Geology

Geological reports by the Ontario Geological Survey for the Wanapitei and Kukagami lakes area include reports by Dressler (1979 and 1982) as well as earlier reports by Thomson (1959) and

Thompson and Card (1963). In Scadding Township, Gowganda Formation metasediments consisting of generally flat-lying conglomerate, quartz arenite and greywacke have been intruded by 2.2 Ga Nipissing Intrusive rocks(van Schmus, 1965). Corfu and Andrews, (1986) have more recently determined age dates of 2.22Ga for the Nipissing gabbro sills. In the study area the Nipissing intrusive rocks consist primarily of gabbro with lesser granodiorite, quartz plagioclase porphyry and pegmatite.

The Nipissing gabbroic sills have been interpreted as cone sheets with two schools of thought on their deformation. Jobin-Bevins (1998) suggests that these intrusions have suffered no deformation since their intrusion, while others suggest that the Nipissing gabbros have been metamorphosed under lower greenschist facies conditions (Dressler, 1982) and folded and block faulted since intrusion (consultant geologist Phil Brown, personal communication).

Lightfoot and Naldrett (1996) describe the Nipissing gabbro as a 150-300 m thick suite of dominantly tholeiitic to calc-alkaline rocks ranging from chilled diabase through quartz diabase, gabbronorite, vari-textured gabbro as well as aplitic phases.

Mineralization

Lightfoot and Naldrett (1996) have suggested the Sudbury Nipissing gabbros may be feeders for the emplacement of continental flood basalts formed along continental margins and as such may have similarities to the Russian Noril'sk Pt/Pd deposits. Their figure le in OGS Study 58 illustrates their presumed lithological sequence (shown below) in a Nipissing sill based on their observations from various intrusions in the Sudbury region. Jobin-Bevins (1998) describes disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite in hypersthene rich gabbro at the base of the Nipissing sill at the Janes prospect in Janes Township (Figure 1). Jobin-Bevins (personal communication) suggested that 2-3*^0 sulfides in Nipissing Gabbro were highly prospective targets for Pt/Pd mineralization. While MO'% sulfides (including blebby sulfides) are noted in the Rathbun Lake Pt/Pd occurrence, significantly lesser sulfide percentages have been associated with Pt/Pd mineralization (Jobin-Bevins and Phil Brown, personal communications).

Dressler (1982) shows the association between elevated MgO values ^10 weight percent) and TiO2 values (0.40 wt.%) and Pt/Pd mineralization in the Rathbun/Wanapitei lakes area. Consulting geologist Phil Brown (personal communication) confided to the author that the use of such whole rock analytical results were useful in delineating Pt/Pd exploration targets. This view is consistent with observations from Lightfoot and Naldrett (1996).

Previous Work

Numerous gold and base metal occurrences generally associated with quartz and/or quartz- carbonate veining along shears lie within the Kukagami property and several pits and shafts have previously been sunk on several of these occurrences. Some of the more significant deposits explored include the Alwin-Porcupine mine, the Red-Rock, Ford, Hildabrand and Midas showings. Ontario Geological Survey reports are available as well as numerous assessment notes on these properties.

Present Fieldwork

A field program based from the Sportsman's Lodge at Kukagami Lake was carried out during three weeks of July, 2000. The claims area is well accessed by roads and/or boat. Traverses were made across Nipissing gabbroic sills with samples collected (generally grab samples) and shipped to Activation Labs in Ancaster, Ontario. Samples were intended to be analyzed for Au, Pt and Pd geochem and whole rock and 48 element litho-geochemistry. Only selected samples from the Kukagami property were analyzed for whole rock litho-geochemistry. GPS units were used to record UTM coordinates using North American Datum (NAD83). Base maps used for the field were 1:20,000 digital topographic maps with geology overlain. For the Kukagami property geology by Thompson (1961) and Thomson and Card (1963) were used for reference. Geological mapping by Dressler (1982) was found to be more accurate. Where mineral occurrences were noted to be within Nipissing Gabbro, these occurrences were sampled for their Pt/Pd potential.

Results

A spreadsheet with particulars on sampling in the Wanapitei/Kukagami region is listed in appendix 3 and shown as Figure 2 (1:20,000) in the pocket of this report. Using a background of 5 ppb Pt and 5 ppb Pd anomalous results are located within the West Kukagami gabbroic sill, with values up to 44 and 35 ppb Pt, Pd respectively. Four samples collected on the west side of McLaren Lake are all anomalous with the highest values reaching 46 ppb Pt and 38 ppb Pd.

The most significant result from the 2000 fieldwork was obtained from a grab sample from ground initially held at the time of sampling by Flagg Resources. A sample of Nipissing gabbro consisting of blebby sulfides found in outcrop (estimated to be 6m in thickness) along the east side of Wanapitei Lake, recorded l gram Pd. At the end of the field program, this ground became open and was staked by Mike Loney and Ed Jerome. Ed Jerome confided to the author that he had seen similar sulfides in outcrop, 100 meters south from the grab sample location. The Nipissing sill within the Kukagami property is thought to be part of the same cone sheet as is mineralized in Rathbun Township where Flagg Resources has presently been exploring and where highly anomalous Pt-Pd mineralization has been located at the south end of Rathbun Lake.

Recent geological mapping and sampling of Nipissing gabbro on the Kukagami property reveals generally quartz diabase and hypersthene rich gabbro suggesting the sill exposure is probably basal with a shallow dip to the north (Jobin-Bevins personal communication). Olivine, magnetite dykes are thought to be post mineralization and thought to be of little significance (Phil Brown, pers. comm.). Sampling such dykes east of Kukagami Lake revealed fresh biotite.

Mineral occurrences associated with shear-related copper and/or gold mineralization in the Kukagami property explored in the present 2000 fieldwork generally recorded poor geochem results in Pt/Pd mineralization.

Conclusions

Preliminary phase l sampling results in the Wanapitei/Kukagami region reflect generally low Pt/Pd geochem results. Nevertheless anomalous Pd/Pt results (up to9 times background) have been located from three areas. These areas include; 1). West side of McLaren Lake; 2). McBeth Township, east of the Sturgeon River and 3). Nipissing sill west of the Kukagami road in the southwestern corner of the Kukagami property.

Of more significance is a grab sample from the former Flagg Resources property, Rathbun Township with a Pd analysis of l gram/tonne. As a result of this analysis and available land position, Solitaire Minerals Corporation was able to option a very favorable land position with significant Pt/Pd mineralization just east of Wanapitei Lake.

Recommendations

The newly acquired Rathbun Township property optioned by Solitaire Minerals represents a significant property and warrants further sampling. It is also recommended that drill core [drilled in April 1998 on the Sturgeon River property] presently held by Irana (?) Mines at their warehouse, west of Sudbury be examined for presence of sulfides. Ed Jerome reported to the author that 45 feet of sulfides were detected in Nipissing Gabbro within this drill core.

The anomalous Pd/Pt results found along the west side of McLaren Lake from limited sampling in this portion of the Kukagami property also warrants further exploration including gridding and possible geophysics. Based on the view that the Nipissing Gabbro may be a cone sheet within the Kukagami property, and its down dip extension is north, exploration north of the presently exposed gabbro (north of the Alwin-Porcupine mine) is warranted. As the area has no outcrop exposure, a geophysical program consisting of magnetometer and induced polarization is recommended.
