Why an Emphasis on Nature and Outdoor Play?
At Kids ‘R’ Kids, we recognize the importance of playtime for
children. Imaginative, exploratory play is invaluable to the development of the whole
child.
Kids Need Nature
• However, in today’s society, most of that playtime occurs inside for the majority of
children.
• Researchers now know children and adults benefit in many ways from being outside.
• For example, being outside tends to encourage creativity and thinking skills as well as decrease stress, aggression, obesity, and the symptoms of ADHD.
Nature Needs Kids At Camp Nature Kids, campers:
will learn to protect the environment by practicing the green rule,
Leave No Trace.
will create their own green pledge to protect the gifts of nature. In other words, nature needs kids.
Leave No Child Inside
In our curriculum, we provide you
with activities to do with the children.
At the same time, we want to provide nature experiences for the children
that are as unorganized as possible but still meaningful.
Conservation Emphasis
As in past years, Kids ‘R’ Kids
continues to emphasize the
importance of protecting the
environment by practicing the 3 Rs
(reduce, reuse, recycle).

rule. • We’re checking out bugs and slime and trees • And critters and creeks and even fleas! • Nature rocks, and that’s no lie! • Nature rocks, and we’ll tell you why: • There’s so much to do and so much to see. • Check out nature and you’ll agree: • (shout) NATURE ROCKS!!!

Materials: camera, chart paper, Club poster, hole punch, markers, paper (11 x 17), poster board, yarn
Preparation: Write words to the “Nature Rocks” chant on chart paper. Prepare the class nature
scrapbook by using poster board for front and back covers with several sheets of 11 x 17 inch paper in between for pages.
Punch holes along the edge and tie with yarn, creating a book. Leave the cover blank.
Teacher Instructions:
• 1. Welcome campers to Camp Nature Kids Clubhouse! Tell them they will have an amazing week as they
discover nature all around them.
• 2. Introduce the “Nature Chant” by displaying the chant poster, and encourage campers to chant with
you.
Nature is what we’re all about,
‘Cause out is in, and in is out!
• 3. Introduce the Club poster and this week’s Wild Word, nature, and Character Word, respectful.
Define nature as “the natural physical world, including plants, animals, land, and water” and
respectful as acting in a way that shows you really care about someone or something.”
• 4. Explain they will be learning all about things in nature. Show campers the Camp Nature Kids
Scrapbook and tell them they will help create pages with pictures and objects as adventures take
place! Remember to have a camera available to photograph activities often.

Plan and Prepare
• Brainstorm ideas for playgrounds that provide interest.
• Collect natural items – rocks, shells, leaves, nests to use in the classrooms and outside.
• Contact environmentalists, forest rangers, conservationists, florists, nurseries.
• Plan field trips. • Prepare Family Connection Letters – ask for
volunteers and materials.
• Learn the vocabulary words for the units, collect theme related books, create journal ideas
• Research the web for pictures, songs, and additional information
• Make it an entire school effort
• Plan a community outreach, invite families for a scavenger school hunt, plant a garden, or add a natural structure to the outside area
• Be aware of campers’ allergies to foods, insect stings, plants, animals, etc.
• Use only soil that contains no fertilizers.
• Because campers will be outside more than usual, use sunscreen (in accord with your
state regulations).
• Ensure you can always see every child for proper supervision. Children enjoy having
special “private” places where they can go outside. However, proper supervision is still
required.
• Before you allow campers to build a nature hut, they should know the safety rules and
practice them throughout the activity.
• Have additional adult chaperones for field trips.
• Provide a safe, healthful environment both inside and out.
• Weather permitting, have the AM and PM Meetings outside.
• Adapt to weather changes, adapt the lesson plan
