The Phantom of the Auction is here... Welcome to the 2016 Public Interest Auction! Thank you for joining us for an evening of food, drink, fierce bidding, and surprise performances, all in support of Harvard Law School’s public interest community.

Since 1994, the annual Public Interest Auction has raised money for the Summer Public Interest Funding (SPIF). SPIF funds the work of students pursuing summer employment in nonprofit, government, or private public interest settings, making it possible for students to accept unpaid or underpaid positions. During the summer of 2015, 457 Harvard Law students received funding totaling $2.134 million. Over 40 of these students worked internationally in 24 countries, and 415 students worked in 33 states, plus the District of Columbia. We are so impressed with the range of work our classmates will take on this summer, and are proud to support and celebrate their public interest employment.

This evening’s event would not have been possible without the participation of many people throughout the law school community. We are truly grateful for the assistance we have received from faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, students and organizations, firms, local businesses, corporations, and families. Thank you! Your support makes it possible for students to do meaningful work and have extraordinary experiences at public service organizations all over the world.

We would also like to thank the members of the Class of 2018. All the 1Ls who will receive SPIF this summer have contributed to this auction, and without them, tonight’s event would not have been possible. The best part of working on the auction for us has been the opportunity to get to know and work with so many of our tremendous classmates.

A few things to keep in mind this evening: When bidding on silent auction items, please be sure to write your bidder number clearly. Please also notice the minimum bids and raises indicated on the item placards. For some items, we provide only the contact information of the donor; it is the winner’s responsibility to follow up. Please recycle any paper goods, including these programs, and compost all compostables in the marked containers. Bid at your own risk; we are not able to make returns.

The Silent Auction will close at 7:00pm. Prepare to be dazzled by our extraordinary auctioneers Professors Susan Davies and Jonathan Zittrain when the Live Auction begins at 7:00pm in the Ames Courtroom.

“Seal my fate tonight. I hate to have to cut the fun short, but the joke's wearing thin. Let the audience in. Let [the auction] BEGIN”

With gratitude – Your 2016 Public Interest Auction CoChairs Erica Jones Ha Ryong Jung (Michael) Melissa Mikail Emily Miller Charlotte Robinson Emily Villa

Joshua Bedell 501 Go Lesson from a Master Player 2 hour class, given by a master Go chess player. Go originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago, and is one of the oldest board games played today. It was considered one of the four essential arts of a cultured Chinese scholar in antiquity. What is unique about Go that distinguishes it from chess is that in Go there is no fixed order of importance among individual pieces. In fact, every piece looks exactly the same except for a difference in color, and quite often one piece can become much more valuable than a congregation of several pieces bundled together, which is the beauty of the game: victory is determined by the territory one occupies on the board, not by the pieces one captured from the opponent. Hence a player is more like a director of symphony than a gladiator in battle ground, not setting out to kill, but rather coordinating the pieces to gain an accumulative and comprehensive edge that leads to final triumph. In this sense, Go chess cultivates a panoramic point of view and esprit de corps in its players, on top of the traditional benefits shared by all chess games: training in mental calculation and foresight through anticipation of the opponent’s move.

805 High Tea for Four with Professors Desan and Steiker at the Boston Public Library Go back in time with high tea (for four students) at the historic Boston Public Library. Established in 1848, by an act of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the Boston Public Library (BPL) was the first large free municipal library in the United States. The Boston Public Library's first building of its own was a former schoolhouse located on Mason Street that was opened to the public on March 20, 1854. The present Copley Square location has been home to the library since 1895, when architect Charles Follen McKim completed his ""palace for the people.” In 1986, the National Park Service designated the McKim Building a National Historic Landmark citing it as “the first outstanding example of Renaissance BeauxArts Classicism in America.” Within the McKim Building are fine murals series (Including by John Singer Sergent, Puvis de Chavannes, and Edwin Austin Abbey), fine collections of rare books and manuscripts, maps, and prints, and splendid gallery space for displaying the numerous treasures assembled over the past 160 years. Within its collection of 23 million items, the library boasts a wealth of rare books and manuscripts, maps, musical scores and prints.
