15th - 28th September 20112EDITOR’S COMMENTS

onlineHub HQ: 01698 803 929www.thehubpaper.com (HQ)

editorHello and welcome to the latest edition of the Perthshire HUB,

Perthshires best FREE publication. As always thank you for picking up your most recent edition.

I can’t believe this is our 10th edition!Well folks, Wednesday 31st we had

our official launch of the Perthshire HUB in the Perth Museum. It was lovely to “put a face to a voice” with people.

We were delighted to meet Perth and Kinross Provost Dr John Hulbert and his wife Sara. Dr Hulbert told me he wanted to show his support and really enjoyed reading the HUB. We were also supported by local councillors, business owners and volunteer workers. So thank you one and all for coming along.

Clearwater Studios provided us with young local talent who sang, played guitar, and were fantastic, as was the catering which was supplied by Hetties. At times it was quite difficult to have a conversation as everyone seemed to be eating the delicious food therefore couldn’t talk.

Delighted to tell you that our HUB newspaper group is expanding again. We already have The HUB , Wishaw HUB, Perthshire HUB and soon to be

launched the East Kilbride HUB . Our Editor in Chief has now acquired, not one ,but four new weekly Scottish titles to add to our publishing group. So things are looking very positive.

In this edition we have added another new column, this one is the GRUB HUB and what a great review it is. This is in addition to our Interior HUB, Cyper HUB, Tech HUB, Natural HUB, Political HUB. So hope you find them all interesting.

Finally I would like to thank all of you for sending such good positive stories which I always try (space allowing) to publish. Keep sending them in folks. This is YOUR community “feel good” newpaper and we want to help create a positive community spirit throughout Perthshire and Kinross.

Enjoy your 10th edition.Liz

Athletic success for Perth disability starsover 26m while Kevin Rice picked up a Silver medal in his event.

A special mention must go to Finlay Skeet, a pupil at Fairview School in Perth and still a junior athlete but competing in the Senior Championships for the first time. Finlay made a great start in his 100m event but a leg injury cut his competition short.

The disability performance squad has had a marvellous year and the Harriers are indebted to Live Active Leisure and The Gannochy Trust for their continued support.

As part of the Harriers drive to

be a fully inclusive athletics club a Consultation Event was held on Wednesday 7th September. The aim of the evening event was to promote our club disability athletics project to the wider community in Perth and Kinross. The event was held in the North Inch Community Campus. The club would like to thank all those who came along to listen, input ideas and understand more about what we are doing in the world of disability athletics. The Harriers would also like to thank Councillor Archie MacLellan, long time supporter of athletics in Perth for opening the event.

Bloom communities flying highRepresentatives from the many “in

Bloom” committees across Perth and Kinross gathered in Perth’s Salutation Hotel on Wednesday evening, 14th September to hear the results of the annual Take a Pride in Perthshire Awards Programme.

The criteria for the competition is in three parts – Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and Community Participation – and the results are stunning!

Judges for the Wee Village and Small Country Town Categories this year were Jim Finnie, Stanley and Len McConnell, Duncrievie, Glenfarg who were very impressed with the communities in their categories.

The Wee Village Category had Joint Jinners this year with finalists Keltybridge and Maryburgh together with Spittalfield both achieving Silver Gilt Medals. The judges commended the small community of Keltybridge and Maryburgh for taking forward its planned activities in a way that is ensuring horticultural practice is in tune with its natural environment. A good range of year round activities have ensured good participation and involvement from the community. The judges enthused about Spittalfield where the bloom group work tirelessly and have successfully engaged the enthusiastic support of many residents in a range of activities to improve the overall appearance of the village.

The Small Village Category judges were Fiona Hair, Perth and Gordon Croll, Blairgowrie. Finalists being assessed in this category were Blackford, Glencarse and St Madoes, Kinnesswood and Muthill. Muthill were Category Winners and with their commitment and enthusiasm - working successfully to involve all ages in their work - they achieved a Gold Medal.

The Large Village Category was judged by Jean Hay and Sylvia Stuart, both from Perth. Bridge of Earn won this Category and achieved a Gold Medal, fighting off stiff competition from Milnathort and Errol who both achieved a Silver Gilt Medal. The judges were impressed with Brig’s community pride in their village and the environment. A highlight of their judging tour was a visit to the Little Blooms pre-school gardening club with the judges also commenting favourably on the work of the Green Teens.

The Small Country Town Category, was judged by Jim Finnie and Len McConnell. Coupar Angus came out with the top award of Category Winner and a Gold Medal. The bloom committee, called Coupar Angus Pride of Place, lives and reflects its name both in terms of horticultural achievement and environmental responsibility. The judges were shown exemplar evidence of near whole community support. Next door neighbours Blairgowrie and Rattray were close runners-up with a Gold Medal.

Each year all the judges are invited to nominate entrants who they feel should be given recognition for extended community involvement and commitment.

• Blair in Bloom were rewarded with “Best Involvement with Community Youth”

• Muthill in Bloom were awarded “Best Community Involvement”

• Brig in Bloom were awarded “Best Involvement with Schools”

• A special award was given to Hazel Pattie, the Chair of Spittalfield in Bloom, for her “Outstanding Contribution” to the Spittalfield community

• In addition Auchterarder Bloom Association – a group in its second full season since its re-establishment – was awarded “Best New Entry” and achieved a Bronze Medal

Recognition was also given to the Beautiful Scotland Competition finalists who achieved excellent results in this year’s National Competition – announced at the Beautiful Scotland Awards Ceremony in windswept Rothesay on Monday - as follows:

• Blairgowrie and Rattray (Gold Medal and Horticultural Award)

• Bridge of Earn (Silver Gilt Medal and Scottish Natural Heritage Biodiversity Award – presented to the entrant that demonstrated the greatest commitment to supporting and increasing biodiversity in their local area)

• Kinnesswood (Silver Gilt Medal)• Muthill (Gold Medal and overall

Category Winner – Small Village)A special mention was also given to

Scotlandwell who is competing in the Small Village Category in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition and the three Perth and Kinross finalists in the RHS Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions Category – Comrie, Perth and Pitlochry. Results for this will be announced on 25th September.

Success was also celebrated for achievements in the British Legion Best Kept War Memorial Competition:

Blackford was the National Winner of the Satellite War Memorial With Gardens

Muthill was the Regional Winner of the Satellite War Memorial Without Gardens

Presenting the awards at the ceremony was Provost John Hulbert, accompanied by his wife Sara. He praised all the local communities for their efforts throughout the year and congratulated the community volunteers who helped make a difference for both residents and visitors alike.

Perth: a Place in HistoryFollowing last year’s successful

Perth800 history conference, a new book on Perth’s history has been published.

A new book charting Perth’s history, based on the two-day history conference held at Perth Concert Hall a year ago, has been published. The Provost and Professor TC Smout, HM Historiographer Royal for Scotland, recently launched this lasting legacy of the ‘Perth 800’ celebrations of 2010, a timely reminder of Perth’s historical importance as the news of the city-status bid is awaited.

The publication brings together twelve distinguished authors, from a variety of backgrounds, to present chapters covering a range of topics including life in the medieval burgh; Perth and Parliament from 1300-1707, as well as more recent history, such as the stories of Adam Anderson, responsible for the burgh’s waterworks, and the whisky giants Dewars and Bells, as well as General Accident.

David Strachan of Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust said: “This is the first publication for over a century to attempt to tell Perth’s story from before the burgh to recent history. We’re delighted that the authors, from academic and business backgrounds as well as local historians, have provided the narratives with such imagination and insight”.

Both the Provost and Prof. Smout commented on the high quality of

both the content and presentation of the publication, which was funded by a variety of sources including the Perth Common Good Fund, Perth Civic Trust, the Glover Incorporation of Perth, and The Guildry Incorporation of Perth.

Dr John Hulbert, Provost of Perth and Kinross, said: “This book is the best of the many very good publications by the Perth & Kinross Heritage Trust. The presentations given at the conference were all excellent and very relevant. Publishing them in this book gives them a permanence and distribution that no conference presentation can achieve, and that is tremendously important for Perth”.

The 104-page A4 book is produced in full colour and contains over 85 illustrations, the vast majority in colour and retails at £15. It is currently available through a variety of outlets including the Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust offices, the AK Bell Library and Perth Museum and Art Gallery.

Treasure Ahoy at Perth Museum and Art GalleryPerth Museum and Art Gallery is being taken over by a scurvy band of Pirates next weekend, in order to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Any Pirate worth his salt knows that this falls annually on 19 September, however in order to allow landlubbers to join in the fun, the museum is holding its free Pirate Fun Time on Saturday 17 September, from 1.30pm until 3.30pm.The Piratical Union of Buccaneers, Corsairs and Associated Trades, or PUBCAT for short, are one of the leading Pirate Re-enactment Groups in the UK. They will provide three 20 minute performances throughout the afternooon, entertaining audiences with tales of life on the ocean

wave. Free tickets are available for these on the day of the event, on a first-come, first-served basis. As part of the fun, mateys and wenches can also create a hoard of pirate-themed crafts, enjoy a treasure trail around the galleries and show off some hand-painted battle scars. Come along dressed as a pirate and make the most of it! Activities in the galleries are suitable for all ages, however the re-enactors featured in the theatre shows take pride in their genuinely fearsome appearance - which may prove a little too realistic for under fives. Children under 12 must be supervised at all times. For show times and other information please telephone 01738 632488 or go to www.pkc.gov.uk/museums

“The grant from the Big Lottery Fund will prove valuable in pushing forward these plans.

“I hope to see the project develop in the coming years and wish the Players well with this project and their future productions.”

Mr Wishart added: “Well done to everyone involved in Blairgowrie Players for their success in securing this funding for their ambitious and exciting plans which will be a wonderful amenity for the whole local area as well as for those directly involved in the group.

Farm visits help build communication with agriculture sector

As part of the NFU Scotland invitation to Scottish

politicians to spend some of their summer recess down on the farm, the Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, and Ms Annabelle Ewing MSP, who represents Mid Scotland & Fife, recently visited Shearerston Farm, near Crieff.

Ms Cunningham, said: “I have always had a great

relationship with NFU Scotland and local farmers and am always keen to discuss policies that will drive forward the rural economy and, in particular, Scotland’s farming, and food sectors.

“A healthy farming industry is extremely important to the Scottish economy as a whole and particularly so here in Perthshire South & Kinross-shire. Annabelle and I are very grateful to Eddie for taking the time and trouble to show us around and spend some time

with us during our visit.”Mr Eddie Cruickshank, Farm

Manager for Charles Connell & Co. who run Shearerston Farm, added: “I was pleased to be able to welcome Roseanna and Annabelle to Shearerston and tell them a bit about what we do. We had a useful discussion about some of the challenges we face and improvements that could help the sector. “We are delighted to be part of anything that ensures rural affairs, whether related to farming, food, or the environment, are firmly on the radar of all Scottish politicians.”

Ms Ewing concluded: “The Scottish agricultural community recognised the record of the SNP Government over the past four years and I know that the proposals we made during the election campaign were well received, an important part of the factors that contributed to our success.

“We must not and will not stop listening directly to those actively involved in the industry so that we can continue to act on their concerns and ideas for the future development of agriculture in Scotland.”

Annabelle Ewing MSP, Eddie Cruickshank, Roseanna Cunningham MSP

Keys handed over for first phase of new council housing in MethvenThe completion of the latest part of Perth & Kinross

Council’s multi-million pound council house building programme was highlighted when keys were handed over for the first phase of homes built in Methven.

20 houses have been built at Rorrie Terrace in the village, to accommodate families of between five to eight people, with a further 10 homes to come. The Methven council housing follows on from construction work in the Letham and Friarton areas of Perth. It is part of an overall project to build 81 houses in locations around Perth and Kinross, making an important contribution to increasing the availability of affordable rented homes locally.

Council Leader Councillor Ian Miller and Housing and Health Vice-Convener Councillor Alasdair Wylie visited the site to see the brand new homes for themselves and

handed over keys to new tenants preparing to move in.Councillor Miller said: “We have made a commitment

to improving access to social housing in Perth and Kinross and the construction of our first new Council houses for 25 years is a key part of the work we are doing to achieve this.

“I am delighted that the building programme is progressing well and we can welcome tenants into their new homes”.

Councillor Wylie added: “The construction of these homes here in Methven and in other locations around Perth and Kinross will make a real difference to our new tenants’ lives. The Council is working hard to enable people to get an affordable roof over their heads in a wide range of ways, and the completion of this latest phase of the Council house building programme is excellent news.”

Swinney welcomes showcase for Perthshire sports

SNP MSP for Perthshire North and Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth Mr

John Swinney has welcomed the upcoming Scottish Sport Awards due to be held in Glasgow on Thursday 1st of December.

The Sunday Mail and sportscotland event is open to all sports and is judged across thirteen categories ranging from Scottish Sports Personality to Local Hero, a full list of categories can be found at www.sundaymailsportsawards.co.uk. Members of the public can make nomination in as many of the thirteen categories as they wish though all nominations must be received by 23rd October 2011.

Commenting on the awards Mr Swinney said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the people of North Perthshire to make nominations from this area to these awards.

“There are a great many people giving freely of their time to train, coach and compete in many different sports and too often their efforts and achievements do not receive the recognition they deserve.

“I would urge as many people as possible to review the categories on the website and nominate people from their club, school or community.

“People will find more information on how to nominate at www.sundaymailsportsawards.co.ukor by calling 0141 309 1402.

“I hope that that the efforts and successes of sportsmen and women in North Perthshire may be recognised in these awards.”

Some of the children from Craigie Playgroup getting ready to welcome new friends at their inaugural Open Week

The children of Craigie Playgroup can’t wait to welcome new friends

Craigie Playgroup are getting ready to host a

special Open Week where parents/carers and kids can sample all that is going on at the sessions- for free!

The group have been in existence for thirty years but have been considering ways to introduce those who have never been, to all the fun new

activities.Following discussions, it was

decided that throwing open the doors for an Open Week would be the best way to showcase what the group has to offer. So, on 14th, 15th and 16th September between 10am and 11.45am, kids can join the sessions free and bring along their parents/carers for some

tea, coffee, cake and chat. The progressive group

is run by two experienced, qualified play leaders, Nicola Parr and Suna Fleming, and the emphasis is on fun and developing creativity. As well as painting, arts, crafts, books, toys and climbing equiptment, children also get a healthy snack at

each session, helping shape good dietary habits for the future. The group is also in the process of building an outdoor garden where little ones can learn how to grow plants and learn about the seasons.

“Our playleaders run a really varied programme and the kids get so many opportunities to have fun and learn new things while they are doing so. It is also a great way for adults to come, meet other like-minded people and make new friends,” said Chair, Julie Allan.“We thought that having an Open Week would be the best way to introduce new people, who have maybe never been before, to what we do.

“We run a really happy group so we want others to have the chance to come along and try it out. There may be some who have passed the Hall before and wondered what was going on so this is a chance for us to welcome them.”Craigie Playgroup is for pre-school children aged 2 to 5 years. You can find out more information on the group’s web site www.craigieplaygroup.net or get answers to any questions you may have by emailing [email protected].

Superfast broadband for Perth welcomedThe Scottish National

Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP and Mr Pete Wishart MP have welcomed the confirmation from BT Scotland that they are to upgrade the Perth exchange to superfast broadband (connection speeds of up 40 Mbps) by autumn 2012.

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, said: “I am extremely pleased to welcome this news, not least because it is an investment I called for in a recent local newspaper column. I am delighted to see BT responding so quickly!

“There are parts of the

city where connectivity is very poor indeed so this new superfast service will be a huge improvement for them.

“The level of service at present depends on how far you are, in cable length terms, from the exchange. The further you are the weaker your signal. “Connection speed does not decrease with distance over fibre-optic cables to anywhere near the extent it does with copper so not only will top connection speeds of 40 Mbps now be available but they will also be achievable for many who until now have only had access to speeds less than a tenth of the 20Mbps that is currently offered.“Now, we must ensure

that rural Perthshire and Kinross-shire can keep pace with the city!”

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, added: “This is great news. Super-fast broadband will be a big boost for businesses and individuals in Perth.

“Vastly improved broadband connection speeds will also add to the attractiveness of the Fair City as a place to live and a business destination.

“Along with my colleagues, I will be continuing to campaign to ensure that the rest of my constituency can receive the same benefit.”

Commenting on the plans announced in

the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government for a single national police force in Scotland, the Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, said: “The plan for a single national police force has cross-party support and

has been welcomed by many involved in policing. I know that this is an issue that will divide opinion but I would urge everyone to look at the facts before jumping to conclusions.

“Local accountability will be actually strengthened under these plans with local communities and elected representatives having more of a say and a greater level of scrutiny and engagement possible

in every local council area. Local knowledge will be retained and there will be an increase in efficiency.

“When policing in Scotland was last re-organised, the number of police forces in Tayside went from three to one, as did the number of Chief Constables. Today there are 341 more police officers across Tayside than there were across the three forces combined.

“Modern structural reform is needed and will result in efficiency savings and the ability to maintain the higher levels of police numbers that the SNP Government has delivered and which as we have seen, just this week, are driving down crime figures, pushing up clear-up rates and making our communities safer and more secure places to live.”

The Scottish National Party’s Ms Annabelle

Ewing MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament representing Mid Scotland & Fife has has urged constituents to be alert to a new telephone scam that has been reported to her.

Ms Ewing said: “Bogus calls are are a real nuisance with callers, often from overseas, trying to con folk into giving away their bank details or access to their computers. It is very easy for folk unsure about technology, particularly the elderly, to be tricked by these calls.

“This most recent scam is particularly sneaky, playing, as it does, on the suspicion about bogus calls that the fraudsters have built up amongst the population.

“These calls, I have been informed, claim to be from BT or the Telephone Preference Service, offering protection from bogus callers. The sting comes when the recipient of the call agrees that they would like this service and are then asked for their bank details to pay in the region of £50 for

the service.“I want to stress to

my constituents that the Telephone Preference Service is free. No-one from the TPS will call you up and ask for money. Anyone doing so is a fraudster and you should simply hang up the phone.

“Signing up for the TPS – which you can do online or by phone - is a good idea. Although, sadly, there is little they can do at the moment about calls from calls from overseas that deliberately flout the law, they do give some defence against bogus calls and telemarketers.”

Perth & Kinross Council would like to remind local carers that they can take a short break from caring through its ‘Flexi

Respite’ scheme.A number of local care homes have agreed to set aside

beds specifically for respite breaks. The carer can make the arrangements themselves directly with the care home of their choice and agree dates that suit both parties.

Feedback from carers who have already made use of this scheme has shown it to be very useful in helping them to manage

their caring responsibilities as well as giving them time for themselves.

To find out more about this service, please contact the Council’s Access Team on 0845 30 111 20 or by emailing [email protected]. A member of the team will advise on making the required arrangements. There is likely to be a charge for the respite break, however, this will be explained to you when you enquire. The Access Team will also provide a list of care homes participating in the scheme.

Once again Perth Theatre is searching the land for

talented local youngsters to perform in panto.

Jack and the Beanstalk is this year’s fee fi fo fun-filled family pantomime, a hilarious adventure of giant proportions with all the wacky characters, crazy costumes and cheering along that Perth Theatre audiences have come to expect from this annual tradition.

Auditions for individuals between the ages of nine and fourteen to play villagers and chorus are being held on Sunday 2 October.

Some experience of dancing and singing is required as the audition will involve learning

and performing a dance routine as well as joining in a group song.

Director Andrew Panton said: “It’s a real honour to be directing Jack & the Beanstalk. Pantos are the first taste of theatre for many of us. I’ll never forget that feeling of seeing the curtain go up as a live band kicks in - it was fantastic - still is! I think it’s essential to involve local young people at Christmas and I’m really looking forward to meeting and working with the youngsters of Perthshire.”

Applicants must register before the day by contacting Sandra Grieve [email protected] for an application pack. Packs

can also be picked up at Horsecross Arts Box Office in Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre and online at www.horsecross.co.uk. The closing date for applications is Friday

16 September.Tickets are already on sale

for Jack and the Beanstalk which runs from Friday 9 December until Saturday 7 January.

A centre of excellence for people with profound and multiple

disabilities has been officially opened in Perth .

The Gleneagles Day Opportunities Centre has been developed by Perth & Kinross Council at a cost of £680,000 to provide specialised resources for disabled adults with complex needs.

The Centre has been created as part of the Council’s development of its Learning Disability Services. Parents, carers and service users played a key part in deciding the design of the centre and the services it offers.

Rona Lamond, whose son uses the centre, said: ”I am absolutely delighted that individuals like my son with more complex disabilities are having their needs better recognised within this new centre. I feel Craig will have increased equal opportunities with the newly developed facilities within the building and am hoping through the specialised therapies he will regain some of his lost skills and delight in the prospect of him returning to a bright stimulated young man.”

The centre boasts high quality, specialist equipment that provides new opportunities for people of different capabilities to enjoy and develop from.

This includes a traction system that allows people with no or little mobility to move freely from one part of the building to the other, and a lifestyle development kitchen suitable for learning skills

and sensory (sound, smell, taste) appreciation.

It has practical working space for staff from the Council and also from other agencies where that would benefit service users.

And features throughout the centre, such as signageinspired by drawings done by people with learning disabilities, come together to create a relaxing and welcoming environment.

Councillor Ian Miller, Leader of Perth & Kinross Council said: “Our aim in transforming our Learning Disability Services has been to develop more localised, flexible and specialist services that focus on ability, not disability. This centre will provide great new opportunities for specialist support for people with complex needs and their families.I am proud to officially open the centre today, and would like to thank and congratulate the staff, parents and carers who have worked so hard and so well together to create this wonderful resource.”

Councillor Alasdair Wylie, Vice Convener, added: “The aspirations and needs of our service users have been the focus throughout the re-design of our services. People with profound and multiple disabilities can often be marginalised in our society. This centre provides them with a welcoming, enjoyable place to be and state-of-the-art facilities to meet their needs. The centre is a great achievement for everyone involved.”

The first “ Scottish New Music Awards” triumphantly took the Classic Grand in

Glasgow by storm, on the 04th of September.

I was proud to have been a part of the beginnings of what I have no doubt will be a

highly coveted awards ceremony, in the coming years . The creator Bruce Hotchkies against all odds put together a highly entertaining and encouraging night. Recognition for [ on the whole ] generally unacknowledged Scottish artist’s and industry specialist was warmly and humbly accepted by most of the 40 winners however some of them hadn’t even bothered to turn up leaving a bad taste in many people’s mouths. How very rude!. Bruce’s choice to not inform the winners before the event possibly led the non attendees into believing they had not won, but surely it was not all about them?. The randomness of the award givers and the eclectic mixture of acts gave the evening a fresh and vibrant feel. This was our own awards Scotland let’s give this man a huge pat on the back and shout from the roof tops “ Thank You”. However grateful Bruce will be for the pats on the back and the praise for having the guts and the ability to pull together what was technically a very difficult thing, but in my opinion very necessary as the world needs to know the huge amounts of talent there is in Scotland. I think support and help in funding next year’s awards would be just what the doctor ordered. The night was not without its hurdles but with host Edward Reid on the mic you could believe it was all part of the show. With Perth’s Very own Dave Arcari not only performing but giving out awards he was also nominated in Video of

the year , Frankie Miller songwriter of the year [along with Crieff man Anthony McIntyre], Jazz /Blues Recording of the year and Artist of the Year. Two bands from Perthshire were also up for awards Threshold Sicks for Loud / Metal band of the Year and Day of Days for Rock Recording of the Year. And Perth shires Amber crusader Dougie Mac Lean did us proud by taking home the award for best album artwork of the year for Resolution, his nominations were also in the categories, Best website / online publication for Perthshire Amber, Sound engineer of the year Jamie Maclean at Butterstone studios Musical event of the year with Perthshire Amber and Artist of the Year. Seems like Perthshire has an abundance of talent right here. Also in the running for awards were Heartland FM radio station in Pitlochry for radio station of the year and The Doghouse in Dundee for Live Club of the Year. With tributes paid to Frankie Miller and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band with his son accepting the Lifetime achievement award from Fish from Marillion , The Scottish New Music Awards was anything but mundane. The company in question were the only ones happy to leave

Brendan as he was and not try to manufacture him into the next Justin Bieber. With social net work sites all Brendan’s friends and fans have been able to keep up to date with his progress but with meetings happening with huge stars like Jay Z and Akon Brendan has very little time to sit down let alone post on these sites. A photo shoot with Natasha Smith of Plush Glamour Orlando Florida , shows how Brendan has matured into a handsome young man and very much the star that he has become. You can check the photos out @ http://plushglamour.com/blog/ or on Brendan’s website @ http://www.

brendanmacfarlane.co.uk/. You can also see videos of Brendan in America singing , and with Brendan beat boxing at the end of “Sat Down With The Devil” . I think we can see a taste of things to come. Well done Brendan Perth is rooting for you.

Byzantium Restaurant – 1, St John’s Place

I decided to give them a try following the advert in Issue

6 of the Perth Hub and I was not at all disappointed.

Booking was easy, one simple call and a table was secured for two of us at 7:00pm on a Thursday evening. On arrival we were impressed by the layout of the restaurant with its clean lines and downstairs café that also caters for disabled diners. We were shown upstairs where our coats were locked away in a hidden cupboard and we were shown to our corner table that gave a good view all round, seated on very comfortable white leather chairs. There were a few other diners already there and these were in the process of ordering or finishing their meals.

The menu was brought to us together with the wine list and I must say it was very hard to make a choice as all the dishes on offer looked very tasty. In the end we went for a Mèze between us, I took the Pork Three Ways from The Wood Stone part of the menu and my partner took the Byzantium Iskenderoni from The Char-Grilled menu, we also took a glass of wine each, my Chilean Merlot lived up to it’s description with an abundance of fruitiness whilst my partner’s Sauvignon Blanc was crisp and cold.

The well presented Mèze arrived and the waiter described each part of the dish before leaving us to enjoy a mix of salsa with pine-nuts, lamb kofta, hummus and various other tasty Mediterranean samplers with warm pitta bread strips. Once finished the plates were taken away and a few minutes later the main courses arrived. I had not been sure what to expect but my fear of it being ‘designer food’ was soon

quelled once I saw the size of the portions on offer. My Pork Three Ways was a large plate filled with slowly cooked pork belly, braised pork cheeks, chorizo and sweet potato torte with pickled turnip, baby leeks and carrots with champagne mustard jus and finished with 2 small toffee apples which were crunchy beyond belief. The pork belly melts in your mouth and the pork cheeks have just the right amount of bitterness to complement it. The chorizo was spicy and hot and the vegetables crunchy and extremely tasty.

My partner’s Iskenderoni looked and smelled incredible with a trio of lamb kofte, char-grilled chicken breast and tenderized rump steak topped with Greek mint and garlic yogurt and their own Byzantium sauce served with saffron rice and salad. The presentation of it was superb and the mixture of tastes was delectable. If there was one thing I would

improve on it would be less rice as it seemed to be a veritable mountain but the sauce mixed with it made it into a delicious glutinous paste.

Having seen the Wood Stone oven I am looking forward to going back to try the pizza and all the other goodies on the menu. Also for those who like to know, the toilets are very clean.

The

Taxi Dispatcher Takes on Live Radio

A Perth man has swapped taxi radio for a chance to get his voice heard right across

Perthshire. After years as a taxi dispatcher for a Perth taxi firm, John Dare, 43, begins hosting hosting Heartland FM’s Lunchtime Live on Monday.

John’s sharp humour while at work co-ordinating cabs, led to suggestions that he should be on the Radio. Customers and drivers used to joke that his talents were wasted and he should get his own radio show. Now John’s responded to the challenge and is going live on Heartland FM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes.

The new presenter muses that taxis gave him “a dose of depression, a large waste-line and a low credit rating” but it gave him a chance to

laugh as well. He enjoyed winding up the drivers at the taxi firm and always had a witty comeback on the cab radio. “I was looking for something new and taking over the live desk at Heartland is just what I’ve been looking for. I’m going to give it my best shot.” He’s one of several people to answer regular appeals from Heartland’s Station Manager, Bruce Patterson, for new talent to step forward.

John’s new show, Lunchtime Live will include comment from John and a mix of music requests from listeners. They can also take part in the lunchtime quiz and sing-along-song.

Tune into John Dare on Lunchtime Live from Monday 19th September, noon till 2pm, on Heartland FM 97.5 in Highland Perthshire and 106.6 In the Perth area.

Autumn Skin

CROSSWORD SUDOKU

The hot summer days are over and you need to adjust

our skincare regime to the upcoming autumn days.

The weather gets a bit colder and although the sun is not as harsh as in summer you should still put a sunscreen on. Hydration is also very important as well as skin nourishment. Here we offer some simple but effective advice on how to take care for your skin in autumn.Summer has exhausted your skin for sure, so it’s essential to get rid of dead skin cells and reveal new, healthier-looking skin. The best way to commence your autumn skincare regime is to exfoliate.

In fact, exfoliation is very important in every season, as it prepares the skin to better absorb applied skincare product. You can use 2 types of exfoliating products – those with tiny hard particles we call

facial scrubs and chemically active ones. Chemical peeling products usually contain active agents such as Retinol, Retinoids, AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and Glucosamine. They cause the upper layers dead skin to gently peel away and reveal younger and more radiant skin. Remember, don’t exfoliate your face more than 2 times a week; otherwise you risk harming your skin.

This is a super-easy facial scrub that you can make yourself and it will really moisturise your skin. Ingredients:3 tablespoons non-fat powdered milk1 tablespoon honey Procedure: Put the powdered milk into a bowl and pour in the honey, mixing well to form a thick paste. To use: wet your face with warm water and scoop up some

scrub. Rub it all over your face. Scrub for around 15 seconds and rinse off with warm water. Pat dry with a towel. Follow with a little of your favorite light moisturizer if your skin feels a little dry.In summer your skin tends to dry out because of the hot weather and wrinkles and fine lines begin to show. So in autumn it’s time to nourish, moisturise and prepare your skin for the upcoming cold

winter days. Choose your facial moisturiser depending on your skin type: if your skin is oily, normal or combination type, use a light, liquid oil-free product. Dry skin needs an extra care, so if this is the case with you, be sure to take a proper cream-based product with thicker texture. Also, it is important to apply the moisturiser twice a day – in the morning and in the evening after cleansing.

Perth Drama Group Finds A HomeFollowing two years of moving around various

venues in the Fair City, Perth Drama Club are delighted to be performing at the Perth College UHI Goodlyburn Theatre this October for the very first time, (20th,21st,22nd) when they will put on three plays all on the same night for the price of one.

Club President, Betty Little, said “We are delighted to have come to an agreement with Perth College UHI to hire their Theatre. Its size suits us just fine. It’s a modern cosy theatre with ample parking. We also hope to attract some of the College’s students along to the club and learn about acting, directing and stage management.”

The club’s “Triple Play” will feature, “The Reunion” and “You Don’t Know me”, written by local playwrights, John White and Carolyn McCole respectively. “Politics in the Park” stars Helen Shannon and Helen Mitchell. Dr John Hulbert, Provost of Perth and Kinross, who is Club Honorary Past President has kindly accepted an invitation to attend the dress rehearsal.

Perth Drama Club which is a registered charity, recently reached the finals of the SCDA Festival with the highly acclaimed “You Don’t Know Me” which deals sensitively with the issue of dementia. The club continues to roll out a popular and varied range of drama and comedy.

Mrs Little said “This is a talented group of people who just love to entertain the people of Perth.”With their increasing success they are always on the lookout for new members not only to act but to assist with backstage and front-of-house duties. The club already has a much viewed trailer on YouTube and are about to launch a website with its own video link.Anyone wishing to know more about joining this successful group or to purchase tickets for the upcoming shows in October should call Barry Tweed 01738 563 025 or email [email protected]. Tickets are just £8 or £6 for concessions. The evening’s entertainment starts at 7.30pm.

Gordon Banks MP

Gordon Banks MP highlighted Coeliac

Disease once again when he led the discussion in a recent Parliamentary debate. As a sufferer himself and Secretary of the All Party Group on Coeliac Disease, Gordon Banks is keen to spread awareness of the illness, especially as numbers are rising in the Ochil and South Perthshire area and across the UK.

The latest debate centred round the problems faced by Coeliac sufferers in being diagnosed, the longer term management of the disease, and spreading awareness and educating the catering and hospitality sector –

eating out can be a particular problem for Coeliacs.

Early diagnosis is vital, the later the diagnosis, the worse the condition and the worse the implications for other conditions that are likely to be inherited as a result of Coeliac Disease.

Since discovering last year that he was reacting to Gluten, world’s number 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic has switched to a gluten-free diet and is staying away from most processed carbohydrates.

Gordon Banks MP said; “As knowledge and awareness of Coeliac Disease is spreading, day-to-day living is improving for those who suffer from it – only this week I was stopped

by a constituent who advised me that gluten-free fish and chips is now available from one of Alloa’s fish and chip shops. This is good news for Coeliac sufferers but also makes good economic sense for the business – a point I made during the debate.”

“Approximately one in a hundred people are celiac and that means about 750 in Ochil and South Perthshire but only about 10-15% are diagnosed. We must continue to push for a better awareness in the medical profession and an informed approach from the catering and hospitality industry.”

You are sitting down reading the paper one afternoon

and the telephone rings, answering it you see it is an ‘International’ call. When you say “hello” a voice at the other end says “Good Afternoon, may I speak with Mr McGuffey please?”.

As this is you, you confirm it to the voice and they continue, “I am from Windows Internet Support and we have detected a problem with your internet connection, could you please turn your PC on and we will try and repair it for you”

The voice then tells you he is James and is helping you sort out your computer’s software problem and that it should not take longer than ten to fifteen minutes. He then asks you to turn on your PC, when you confirm it is he says to log on to your account and tell him when you are at your desktop (the screen where all your buttons

are). This is where he takes over,

he asks you to click on the windows icon at the bottom left of the screen then type in eventvwr into the search box. You do this and a box comes up with all sorts of data in it. James asks you to check in the Summary of Administrative Events section and to tell him the total Critical errors there are. You check and tell him how many there are (no computer will have zero). He will sound pensive, “Hmm, that is a lot” and ask you to click on the + sign and tell him what is there. You tell him that there are three Kernel-Power System criticals. He will respond with something like “that is a very serious problem and I will need to get that sorted for you otherwise your PC will end up badly corrupted and you will need to buy a new one”.

He asks you to open your

internet browser (Google/Yahoo, or something similar) and to type in www.logmein123.com to the address line and press enter. It brings up a screen asking for your 6-digit code which James will give you. You enter this and he has full access to your PC and can see everything on there. He can control your cursor and will be looking in various directories for information. He will also run some programmes which he tells you it is quite normal as he is trying to identify the problems. Finally he tells you that he has found the problem is will have to install some software to clean it and prevent it happening again which will cost you £40. When you tell him your credit/debit card details over the phone he ‘processes’ your payment and you will see him installing the software on your PC before telling you that it is all now cured and should

you have any problems to call him back. He will then thank you for your time and end the call. So what was his telephone number?

This is a scam, as you have probably guessed, and what he has done is take your bank card details to ‘pay for the work he did’ which was basically a nosey round your personal files and then install some tracking software on your PC to pick up any account details you have. He will use this information in one of two ways, either to use your accounts to defraud you or sell your details and

those of your accounts to other scammers who will then use your accounts for nefarious means.

If you get a call like this, tell them you are not interested and will go to the police about it and make sure they put down the phone. Do not identify who you

are and please, do not follow their instructions.

If you have any queries about any of this or think you may have been scammed please feel free to contact me at KPG Professional Services on [email protected] or by calling 07413 943228 for help and guidance.

Blog for your businessYou need to build quality back-

links pointing to your new site. These can be accomplished quickly and will cost you absolutely nothing.

Depending on how well and how quickly you can write some new articles, this should only take you a couple of hours, from start to finish. Creating a free blogThese are the 2 most popular free blogging systems:• Blogger.com • WordPress.com

1. Name the blog something

related to your site, one of your main keyword phrases.

2. Write one long article or “post” about your main topic related to your new or target site. Do NOT write about the target site itself, or any product you may be selling. Write these posts about the details of (your new site main keywords or topic), details about how to do things, the history of the craft, where to find good (your topic here), how to use (your topic), etc. Write about some related to your new target site, but

avoid repeating stuff that’s already on that site. Make it completely, 100% original content. Organize the structure of the post nicely with a headline, sub-headings and topical paragraphs that reflect the keyword phrases (3 or 4 of them) that are similar to those of your main site. Ideally make these posts at least 500 words. Longer is better. Remember NOT to duplicated phrases, sentences, headlines or anything between any of these new blogs and your main target site.

3. Near the top of your new article-post on each of these blogs, insert a link around the number-1 most important keyword phrase that your main site is about.

4. Make this link point directly at the front page of your site, and do NOT “nofollow” this link. Be sure this link is in the first paragraph at the top of the page or post. Put it INSIDE the paragraph, not above or below it. Make sure that this link is surrounded by related “good content”. Do not put any other

links on this post that point to any other site. Check this post/article over carefully to ensure that it is spelled properly and uses excellent grammar. That’s important to Google.

5. Save that post and “publish” it so that it is available to the world. If you’ve done this well you will earn you some nice rating value from Google. You don’t need to publicize these blogs. They do that automatically, all by themselves. Blog technology magically notifies the world about each post you make

in seconds.Visitors to your blog may leave a comment and possibly click on your links within your blog article to view your website which is a further bonus. Regardless, Google view incoming (backlinks) from the likes of WordPress blogs as very important and in turn will help your website search engine ranking. silver medal winning curling skip, is to swap her curling broom for a set of golf clubs as she moves across to her other passion. She has been included as part of the Perth and Kinross County team in the Scottish Women’s County Championship finals taking place at the Dumfries and County Golf Club from September 16th – 18th.

The 21 year old golfer plays off a three handicap at the Pitlochry course as well as being the youngest leading skip in curling. She has just recovered from a dislocated knee, which has hampered her preparations for both the golf and the start of her curling season at the end of September. A good run out at Loch Lomond’s The Carrick at the invitation of Gavin Hastings showed her she was ready and gives her the belief she can help Perth and Kinross to take the title, despite being busy with her curling training. The ultra-competitive Muirhead is making the most of her last golfing opportunity of the year and really wants to win to set herself up for a strong winter on the rinks.

<<< FLY FISHING

Big Brown Beauty

Loch Leven has come up with the largest fish caught there

in nearly 100 years when Michael Mackenzie, from East Whitburn’s West Lothian Fly Dressers fishing club, landed a brown trout that he can lunch on for years to come.

The huge brownie, caught on a full floating line with a black deer hair snail imitation, weighed in at a fraction over 9lbs 6oz (3.8kg), measured 29.9” (76cm) and was estimated to be between 11 and 13 years old. Scale samples have been sent for a more accurate answer to Pitlochry’s Marine Scotland Laboratories

The largest brown trout ever caught on Loch Leven was 9lbs 13oz (3.95kg)

but was allegedly foul-hooked by a Colonel Scott on 8th September 1911. This one however was caught fair and square following a tremendous 20 minute fight. Mr Mackenzie even joked that his companions had to restart the motor boat to allow him to keep up with the fish as it swam across the loch just by the East Buoy.

Loch Leven has seen some very nice catches so far this month with Dave Bonnington and James Gardiner having 11 fish between them, the largest estimated to be about 7lbs (2.8kg) returning all of them except for two. Kinnoull share spoils In eight goal thrillerKinnoull 4 Lochgelly 4

Kinnoull were held to a 4–4 draw at home to

Lochgelly Albert but despite being in the lead with just a minute remaining they find themselves back at the top of table.

They started off well and attacked from the kick off creating a couple of good chances in the first 10 minutes but could not find the killer blow and convert them to goals. Suddenly, on 12 minutes, they were a goal behind when a long ball from Lochgelly’s midfield was picked up by Willie Telford who swept past the defenders, cut in and laid a great ball into the path of Steve Brown who scored from close range.

Five minutes later, Kinnoull were back on level terms after a free kick was sent into the penalty box where Lee Deans’ 12 yard shot seemed to be heading for the corner of the net before Chris Webster helped it on its way. They continued to dominate with Richard Doig just missing a cross a few feet from the goal line and Gary Fraser firing a shot off the foot of the post with the Lochgelly goalie posted missing.

On 37 minutes Lee Deans took a pass inside the Lochgelly penalty box but was brought down by the centre half Andy Barrett to win a penalty. Daryn Smith stepped up, sent the

keeper the wrong way and fired Kinnoull into a well deserved lead. This only lasted a couple of minutes as it was Lochgelly’s turn to be awarded a penalty after centre half Ryan Ward brought down Lee Celentano and Steve Brown beat Kinnoull goalie, Duncan Bruce, for the second time.

Three minutes from half time, the now rampant Lochgelly regained their lead with a cross from Willie Telford into the penalty box not being cleared by the defence which allowed Jim McDiarmid a score from a few yards out.

From the restart a fired up Kinnoull chased an equaliser and, on 62 minutes, a cross from Jordan Timmin was met by substitute David Carr diving to crash a header past the Lochgelly goalie. They continued battering the Lochgelly defence and came close once or twice but the score remained at 3-3.

Inside the final 10 minutes another substitute, Gavin Tinley, played a great ball to Gary Fraser on the right side of the penalty who turned the defender and smashed a great strike past the keeper from 15 yards. Two minutes later Kinnoull could have made it 5–3 but when Chris Webster found himself in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who came racing of his line, he tried to put the ball past him but was

thwarted when the goalie managed to block his shot. The excitement continued as the ball bounced away to Gary Fraser but the Lochgelly stopper produced yet another superb save to keep his team in the game. His athletic saves brought just reward in the final

minute when Lochgelly were awarded a free kick just outside Kinnoull’s 18 yard box. They fired a shot into the goalmouth and, in the ensuing stramash, Andy Barrett broke Kinnoull hearts when he scrambled the ball over the goal line for the equaliser.

Luncarty back to winning waysLuncarty visited Crossgate

Primrose in their third Central League match on Saturday picking up all three points after resoundingly beating them 4–2 putting them in mid-table with four points from their three games.

A delighted manager Mark Potter was ecstatic after their defeat the week before saying that this showed you can knock them down but they soon get up again, as proved with this huge away win. This is the totla opposite to last season where they propped up the league with ‘nil points’.

They didn’t start to well going a goal behind in the first minute when a cross into their goalmouth found Crossgate Primrose forward, Dave Clark, clear in front of the goal and he scored an easy chance from close range. However, this season’s Luncarty are so different from last season and soon showed their mettle.

With only a few minutes to go until the interval The Bleachers won a free kick which was superbly taken by

Scott Peletier only for it to be parried by the goalie but Angus Wilson following up. hammered it into the corner of the net to take them in all square at half time.

10 minutes into the second half new signing Scott McKain ran on to a great pass from Scott Lafferty and celebrated his debut with a left foot shot flying in at the back post to give Luncarty a 2-1 lead. It only took a further four minutes for right winger Mark Caldow to get away from his marker into the penalty box and finish with a magnificent shot from 15 yards, 3-1.

Primrose reduced The Bleachers lead 10 minutes later after the referee judged that central defender Neil Ritchie’s tackle was worth a penalty with Darren Watson hitting the net to make it 3–2.

Mark Caldow doubled his score and restored Luncarty’s two goal lead with 10 minutes to go, when he connected with a Scott Lafferty free kick to make it 4–2 and clinch all three points.
