• Reverse engineered current municipal water treatment process.
• Small packet to treat 10 liters of water using coagulation, flocculation and disinfection.

WHAT DOES P&G PURIFIER OF WATER REMOVE?
– In laboratory testing and field studies, it is proven to significantly:
• Reduce bacteria by up to greater than 7 logs, viruses by greater than 4 logs and parasites by greater than 3 logs.
• Improve water turbidity
• Reduce heavy metals such as arsenic, chromium (III) and lead.
• Remove organics and some pesticides, such as DDT.
WHERE HAS P&G PURIFIER OF WATER BEEN DISTRIBUTED?
HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT?
• Simple tools required for usage:– A scissor or knife to open the sachet– A stirrer or other implement to stir the water– Two vessels (i.e. buckets) with volume capacity of 10 liters
or more – the first to be used for the treatment process and the second to be used for storing the treated water.
IS THE FINAL WATER SAFE TO DRINK?
YES
•All of the ingredients used in P&G Purifier of Water are approved for water treatment and are used broadly across the world.
•The final treated water complies with WHO requirements for drinking water.
HOW LONG IS THE WATER SAFE TO DRINK?
As long as it is stored safely. However, it is recommended that the water be used within
several days.
DOES IT MEET ANY CERTIFICATION?
P&G Purifier of Water is listed as a “protective” household water treatment by the World Health
Organization.
DOES P&G PURIFIER OF WATER HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE OR SHELF LIFE?
The product has an established stability profile which supports a 3 year expiration date.
CAN P&G PURIFIER OF WATER BE USED TO TREAT SEA WATER?
P&G Purifier of Water will not desalinate sea water and should not be used on sewage sludge and water contaminated with industrial waste.

DURING FLOODS / EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
– Contaminated drinking water is a major problem during emergencies.
– Two major sources of contamination are microbial pathogens and suspended matter.
– Microbial contamination occurs when human and animal fecal matter comes into contact with drinking water sources.
– Suspended solid material (varying combinations of sediment – mud – and other organic matter) is also common.

SAMPLE TECHNIQUES FOR TARGET AUDIENCE

• Integration with existing handwash programs.
• Interactive demonstration as a science experiment, explaining the two main ingredients of the sachet and how they work together to purify turbid, contaminated water.
– Mothers (Clinics)
• Train healthcare workers (nurses, midwives) as demonstrators. This will promote sustainable training as well as confidence in product credibility.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OVERCOMING POTENTIAL OBSTACLES FOR SUCCESSFUL
DISTRIBUTION OF PACKETS
– Education around chlorine taste and odor
• In many circumstances, P&G sachets will be distributed to people who have never been served an improved water supply and who are not accustomed to chlorine taste and odor.
• Experience has shown us that consumers will come to accept chlorine taste if they understand the importance of chlorine in removing microbial pathogens.
– Acceptance by government officials and community leaders
• Important to engage government officials and community leaders so that they understand that the product is safe for their communities and will provide an effective and practical solution to providing emergency drinking water.
• The emergency response needs to be coordinated with the local government recommendations so that there are no conflicting messages.
– Familiarization and education on usage
• A demonstration in which the presenter prepares treated water using a local source of water is the best way to educate people on proper use.
• The presentation should emphasize that even though the full treatment process requires 30 minutes, the amount of labor involved is only 5 minutes.
• The instructions for using the packets can be provided in the local language(s).
