Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 206National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

(FMVSS 206)Door Locks, Retention Components, Passenger Cars,

Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles, and Trucks.

In order to protect vehicle passengers from being thrown out of a vehicle during crashes, only select door retention latch mechanisms may be used in vehicles with passenger carrying compartments. The design and testing requirements of the FMVSS 206 safety standard require a primary and secondary latching configuration. Each configuration must withstand transverse and longitudinal load forces.A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. is a leader in the manufacturing of door locking component mechanisms. Rigid strength testing has been conducted on all mechanisms to insure the design and quality parameters. You can be assured of quality products when you use A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. locking mechanisms.

Lubrication &

MaintenanceMINIMUM “FACTORY” LUBRICANTSA. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. supplies its component assemblies to first stage manufacturers and end users with the MINIMUM AMOUNT OF LUBRICATION. Our customers have told us that excess lubricants affects their manufacturing process and final finish coat applications. They want only the amount of lubrication to make the assembly work properly within their system. Additional grease and/or oil is applied after the final finish stage.

Customer Application InformationIn most cases, the final use for an A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. component assembly is known only to the buyer / end user. Our components are mounted in systems that are used for internal or outdoor applications. These systems are designed for both limited and heavy duty industrial cycling. The final finish may be factory supplied zinc or special E-coat / Powder coat paints. All of these use / finish factors influence the amount and type of lubricant to be used.

Preventative MaintenancePreventive Maintenance (PM) is the scheduled review and care of equipment. The basic assumption behind PM is that moving parts need lubrication. The type, frequency and amount is influenced by the intended application and the life expectancy wanted by the user. Apply quality lubricants that meet the intended application to all component parts before they are put into service. A preventative maintenance schedule is needed to maintain the quality parts and workmanship put into the products from A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co.

Finish Guide

A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. is continuously researching finishes for its products that will provide the best in corrosion protection and appearance. New processes and materials are being evaluated at a rapid pace. This finish guide has been created to show some of the finishes available to you. The first section of the finish guide is a bar graph that shows the relative corrosion resistance that each finish can be expected to deliver. The second section is a list of common finishes with an explanation of what they are and what properties they possess. The third section is a chart showing products grouped by family and what finishes are typically used on them. Use the finish guide to make an informed decision for your specific application.

Relative Hours - Corrosion Protection

Corrosion resistance of a finish can be denoted in terms of number of hours exposed to salt spray (FOG) testing per ASTM B 117-90 Test Method. The results indicated the number of hours before white corrosion (the first stage of reaction) begins. The above chart reflects the differences in corrosion resistance abilities of some of the finishes offered. For detailed information regarding available finishes, contact your A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. sales or customer service representative.

Zinc Plating:

Zinc/Colored Chromate:

Properties: Appearance-Moderate, Abrasion Resistance-Excellent, Paint Adhesion-Excellent.

Chrome Plating:

A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. offers a commercial zinc finish on its steel and iron products. This

finish is a zinc electroplating process with a clear chromate otherwise known as bright blue. The clear

chromate supplement is added to the zinc surface for improved corrosion resistance. Commercial zinc

plating can be used as a primer coat or as a base coat for a number of top coat finishes.

This finish is zinc plating with a layer of colored chromate. The colored

chromate provides a higher corrosion resistance properties than commercial zinc and is commonly

used as a primer.

A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. offers the highest quality of chrome plating on a number of its

products lines. Chrome plating is an electroplating process which applies three layers of metal; copper,

nickel and chromium. Depending on the surface preparation (polishing) and the final chrome thickness,

the finish can range from satin to a high luster/mirror-like surface.

Powder Coating:

E-Coat:

Applicable.

Anodizing:

A. L. Hansen Mfg. offers a polyester powder coat finish for most of its products. The

polyester construction is ideally suited for exterior applications. Powder coating is an electrostatic paint

process followed by a thermal curing of the finish. This provides a uniform coverage. The powder coat

process is quickly replacing liquid paint because of environmental concerns over paint VOC’s. Available

in a variety of colors, powder coat is used primarily as a top coat finish.

A. L. Hansen Mfg. offers an acrylic E-coat which is ideally suited for exterior applications. The

E-coating is applied through an electroplating process followed by a thermal curing of the finish. Full

curing normally takes 24 hours. Commonly used as a final top coat, it is available in a variety of colors.

A clear E-coat is also available and used in conjunction with other finishes such as commercial zinc. It

offers an excellent appearance with high corrosion resistance.

Electro-polishing is considered the highest form of passivation and can make a part

up to 30 times more passive than passivation. Passivation is the removal of free iron contamination

from the surface of stainless steel that could be left behind from fabrication processes. Passivation not

only cleans the part, it also forms a thin transparent oxide film that protects the stainless from selective

oxidation.

Anodizing is used exclusively on aluminum products. Anodizing is an electrolytic process

where the thin oxide film on the aluminum surface is converted to an anodic coating. This anodic

coating can provide a hard, wear and scratch resistant surface. Dyes are used to provide specific

decorative appearance and colors.

1) What is commercial zinc?Commercial Zinc is the name or label given to a zinc finish specification that is commonly used in finishing metal parts. When specifying “Commercial Zinc”, you get basic range of zinc finish protection. The normal composition has a thickness of .0002” (two ten thousandths of an inch) of zinc applied by electro-plating. Some commercial zinc formulations add a chromate top covering to protect the zinc finish. The commercial zinc finish supplied by A. L. Hansen Mfg. includes the chromate top covering.

2) Why use a chromate top covering?Even though zinc provides protection from rust formation, the surface of the zinc does not remain bright or stain-free in use. To avoid staining and provide some abrasion protection, a thin film of chromate is applied over the zinc finish. There are 3 classes of chromate finishes in general use: blue bright, clear, and iridescent color (yellow ”gold”, black, olive drab). The protective value of a chromate finish increases with increasing thickness.

3) Are there different classes or types of zinc finish?Yes. The American Society for Testing Methods (ASTM) specification B 633 has four classifications for electroplated zinc finishes. They are based on coating thicknesses and type of application / environment that will be seen. Service Conditions 1 is mild indoor applications and they move up to Service Condition 4 which is very sever exposure to harsh outdoor high abrasive applications. The basic idea is that protection increases as the finish thickness increases.

4) Should I use commercial zinc as a final finish?That depends on the level of protection you are seeking for the intended application. In a highly corrosive salt water environment, like a boat, a commercial zinc finish is not normally used. That is why you see more expensive powder coat or chrome finishes. Commercial zinc in normally used for indoor applications or as the base coat for a more protective top coat such as paint. Again, finish protection normally increases with increasing thickness.

5) Why is salt spray testing used?Salt spray testing is a means to measure the relative protective value of a particular finish. The keyword is relative. By rigidly controlling the exposure environment, a value can be derived to measure when corrosion starts. The American Society for Testing Methods (ASTM) salt spray specification B 117-90 is a detailed testing method for controlling the amount of salt spray solution, at what temperature, in what direction and much more. The results, normally in hours of exposure, allows for comparison of different finish formulations.

6) What can I do to get more protection from my components?First is know your application / environment requirements. What life do you expect from the finish and how should it look after 1, 3, 5 years? The finish protection required for outdoor road use is greater then indoor office use. There are a number of finish combinations ( zinc, zinc = paint, powder coat, E-coat) that provide extended protection. Work with your component supplier and learn what finish options are available for your application.

7) Will a higher finish protection increase my cost?Yes, more material and time is needed to achieve increased protection. However, a good manufacturer will make sure to only apply the necessary finish needed for your particular application. This will ensure you pay only for what protection you need. (See Q & A # 6)

8) What finishes are offered by A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co?A. L. Hansen Mfg. Co. provides a wide array of finishes for a number of applications. They range from commercial zinc to custom color powder coats. Also, we meet very stringent & specific customer and government finish specifications for some complex assemblies. SECURITY HINGE PIN

A. L. Hansen’s security hinge pin provides added security and improved

appearance & reduced maintenance. Our security hinge pin has a washer

which is formed as part of the pin. This allows us to provide a flush hinge

pin, eliminate unsightly welds or stake marks, and rule out any possibility

of removing the pin by driving it thru the hinge. Our free flow finish is a

standard feature on virtually all of our steel hinges. It provides more than

500 hours of salt spray protection and reduces the need for grease zerks

and bronze bushings. This is achieved by a process of applying a blend

of solid film lubricants in a heat cured, organic resin binder leaving a thin,

dry bonded lubricating coating.
