Pfizer CARES is the corporate social responsibility program for Pfizer Australia. This is our report card and our opportunity to share our work in helping to transform communities and live the four core pillars that shape who we are: patients, community, colleagues and environment.

Every day, all around Australia, we’re helping our healthcare professionals take on the toughest challenges for their patients. In addition, we’re partnering with not-for-profit organisations to support communities most in need, finding ways to reduce our impact on the environment and providing a diverse and engaging workplace for 1700 people.

The platform to accomplish these ambitions is Pfizer CARES. More than just another corporate social responsibility program, it is the defining feature of our culture.

Central to Pfizer CARES is our goal to inspire our employees to act by connecting them with different communities through seed grants and key engagement opportunities with our charity of choice, The Smith Family. We channel our skills and put our imaginations to work to help bring innovative learning into community education, identifying sustainable solutions and ensuring every community in which we operate is a better place to live and work.

We know what can be achieved when people discover a passion for helping others. Pfizer CARES is powered by the generosity and talent of our employees, especially our CARES CHAMPS, who have a strong commitment to ensuring that our organisation can make a difference where it matters most.

Melissa McGregor Managing Director Pfizer Australia

Welcome to the third Pfizer CARES Annual Report. Pfizer has been a part of the Australian healthcare landscape since 1956. Across the country we employ a team of highly-skilled and caring professionals, research and manufacture medicines and actively support the communities we live and work in.

Liquid GoldEncouraging our Employees to Help Sustain Life

Australian heroes is the term used by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service to describe those who give lifesaving blood donations that are required by everyday Australians.

Cancer patients, pregnant women, road trauma victims, premature babies and people with blood disorders need blood every day. Statistically, one-in-three people will need blood in their lifetime. Despite this, only one-in-30 Australians donate. To put it in perspective, about nine million Australians are eligible to give blood but only 500,000 actively do so.

Pfizer co-ordinated a number of visits from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service with 272 colleagues donating blood last year. The Red Cross estimates that every blood donation can help support three patients.

It’s a reminder that a small contribution can have a lifelong impact.

Daffodil DayWorking Towards a Cancer-Free Future

The humble daffodil has stood proudly as the national symbol in the fight against cancer every August for the past 32 years. Dozens of Pfizer volunteers donned the canary hues and took to the streets to raise awareness and several thousand dollars for the Australian Cancer Council last year.

At Pfizer, oncology is one of the key priority therapy areas. Our scientists share a common goal: to get effective, life-changing medicines to patients who need it most as quickly as possible. Breakthrough cancer treatments often begin with a spark of insight but patients are the true inspiration for what we do. The daffodil is a reminder that, despite how far we have all come in the fight against cancer, there remains more progress to be made.

McGrath Foundation Pfizer Pads up on Pink Stumps Day

Front yard cricket dominates the Pfizer calendar every April as employees pad up to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.

Pfizer has a long-standing relationship with the foundation, donating $300,000 to support a metastatic breast cancer nurse over a three-year period in 2015. There are only four metastatic breast cancer nurses in Australia, providing a unique service to people who have been diagnosed with advanced or metastatic cancer.

Pfizer Australia Head of Oncology Elise Kelly said metastatic care can be extremely varied and complex which is why funding is so vital.

“The McGrath Breast Care Nurses provide invaluable support to not only those living with breast cancer but also their friends and family. We are very proud to support them in their work,” Elise said.

In addition to providing quality medicines that change lives, Pfizer Australia continues to invest in patient groups and their amazing work. Pfizer contributed $350,000 to these organisations in 2017.

Haemophilia BookTackling Disease Education for Young Australians

Pfizer Australia colleague and children’s book author Monica Collins understands a thing or two about combining her commitment to health and education. She has found the ideal platform to leverage those skills in Pfizer.

As a second-time author of a book resource directed at young teenagers with Haemophilia, their families and clinicians, Monica is learning to balance life as a sales representative and writer.

“My speciality is creating relationships. I build these connections, learn about my customer’s problems and work out a way to find a solution. When I found out that there was no educational material on haemophilia, writing a children’s book about it just seemed like the logical thing to do,” Monica said.

The new book, Ben Gets Ready for Camp, explores a young boy navigating his first step towards independence and removing stigma. Released to 16 national Haemophilia Training Centres, the Haemophilia Foundation, local schools and libraries, the book has also been published in New Zealand as a resource for young children and adolescents.

Haemophilia occurs in one-in-6000-10,000 males and there are more than 2700 people with the condition in Australia.

Pfizer CARES ChampsBehind Every Good Deed is a CHAMP

A good relationship with our local communities and charity partners is very important to us and requires an enormous amount of work.

The engagement, co-ordination, communication and management of Pfizer CARES owes its success to a dedicated team of 25 Pfizer colleagues that represent every corner of our business. Their ambition is to drive the energy and commitment of colleagues to donate, educate and congregate around charity groups big and small.

Their work has not gone unnoticed and the Pfizer CARES program was awarded Highly Commended Corporate Social Responsibility Program at the 2017 PRIME Awards.

Community Collaboration GrantsMaking a Difference to Charities that make all the Difference

If we are to encourage people’s energy and commitment at work, the right environment is needed to foster their excitement and provide a place to contribute.

Pfizer CARES Community Collaboration Grants were established as an opportunity for colleagues to apply for funds to support their favourite local charity. Last year, $20,000 in grants were awarded to support organisations such as the Starlight Children’s Foundation, Essentials for Women, Variety Australia, The Hospital Research Foundation, Lifeline, Heart Foundation and Transplant Australia.

ENVIRONMENT

Our health and wellbeing strategy promotes ways to improve colleague health as well as creating a sense of community involvement. We do this each year by offering a range of services, leave and flexibility options to assist in managing both personal and community interests and responsibilities.

The Smith FamilyCreating a Better Future with our Charity of Choice

Pfizer worked with our charity of choice, the Smith Family, on a range of engagement opportunities in 2017. These helped ensure disadvantaged Australian children have the tools and resources they need to succeed at school, continue on to further study or a job and, ultimately, create a better future.

In addition to the larger partnership events such as Work Inspiration and Hackathon, Pfizer colleagues gave their time to building toys, donated 12 used iPads and 42 used iPhones, hosted fundraising, handwrote supporter thank you cards, reviewed student profiles and collected, packed and delivered Christmas toys and books.

Our contribution played a small part in helping The Smith Family achieve its goal of delivering more than 60,000 new toys and 40,000 new books to 20,000 Australian children in need last Christmas.

“Partnerships such as this one with Pfizer are very important to The Smith Family. After all, it was community-minded business people who founded The Smith Family in 1922 and our corporate partners continue to be an essential part of our organisation today,” The Smith Family Head of Strategy and Philanthropy Judy Barraclough said.

“The work that we undertake with Pfizer is a fantastic example of a mutually-beneficial partnership, as it not only impacts the lives of children and families in need but also engages Pfizer’s workforce across the nation.”

The Smith Family - Hackathon Creative Think Tank

When you place 35 Pfizer colleagues for two days in a room to problem solve, big ideas are never in short supply. Pfizer colleagues hosted The Smith Family Hackathon to find creative solutions that addressed two challenges identified by the charity, corporate partner engagement and staff recognition.

With an emphasis on creating lasting change, The Smith Family has been ambitious with their vision and strategy and recognised the need for outside thinking that would both confirm assumptions and offer surprises in the form of new ideas.

The Hackathon was the perfect platform to offer professional volunteering consultation along with training and capability development for Pfizer. Of the six innovative ideas developed, two are currently being trialled in a recognition and reward pilot.

The Smith Family - Work Inspiration Life Inspiring Ideas

With 1.1 million Australian children and young people living in poverty, Pfizer was committed to supporting The Smith Family in their efforts to help these children to create a better future.

In late 2017, Pfizer hosted Work Inspiration, a program developed for 18 students in year 9 and 10 from Cranebrook High School in Western Sydney to broaden their perspective about work and the business community and help develop aspirations for employment post school.

The two-day workshop was designed for students to focus on three career engagement work streams: career planning, understanding career pathways and increasing commitment to learning. It was a unique opportunity for Pfizer colleagues to share their own experience with education, host site tours and discuss employment options.

The students were engaged and motivated with all being very satisfied with the Work Inspiration program.

ENVIRONMENT

Our community engagement program encourages employees to become involved with the community by volunteering their time to work with community organisations. Pfizer Australia provides all colleagues with four days every year to volunteer with a variety of charity organisations.

A Sustainable Environment Our Environmentally-Friendly Footprint

As a responsible corporate citizen and neighbour, environmental sustainability makes good business sense and is an important investment in our future.

The passion and enthusiasm of our employees helps fuel our approach to environmental sustainability as we look to integrate sustainable practices into our business, from our manufacturing facilities right through to our commercial activities. We proactively make the right choices about the way we look after the world. Our environmental stewardship includes managing waste in a responsible manner by focusing on source reduction, waste minimisation, and recycling improvements. We also focus on cleaner energy through initiatives such as carpooling and improving our manufacturing efficiency.

We remain committed to being a responsible company and strive to extend the positive impact our medicines make around the world. We commit significant time, energy, and resources to efforts that make us a better corporate citizen.

Clean Up Australia Day Pfizer Cleans Up

Australians have devoted 32 million hours to cleaning the environment and collected more than 344,000 tonnes of rubbish since Clean Up Australia Day began more than 27 years ago.

As in previous years, Pfizer Australia was eager to fulfil our ongoing commitment to the promotion of a clean, healthy and sustainable environment and hosted six Clean Up events in 2017.

With an army of about 180 employees across our four Pfizer sites, the Pfizer team got cleaning – hitting parks, roadways, riverbeds and building sites with about 2.2 tonnes of rubbish collected.

The Smith Family Recycling A New Home for Old Clothes

Pfizer’s support of The Smith Family goes beyond sponsorship dollars and includes the giving of used clothing for recycling, with 3821 kilograms donated from charity bins located at Pfizer’s Sydney office last year.

The sale of recycled clothing helps The Smith Family offset operational and program costs to ensure that the majority of funds raised through donations from supporters can be spent directly on programs for children and young people in need.

The Smith Family prevents more than 7.5 million kilograms of textile waste ending up in landfill each year.

ENVIRONMENT

Our environmental stewardship means we are working to make a positive difference in our local communities. This is demonstrated in many ways, from recycling and waste reduction in manufacturing and in our offices, the use of hybrid fleet vehicles and even lending a hand to clean up Australia.
