It would be a way for P.S.E. to give something back to those who at one time gave to P.S.E. while in school. To do this however, an extensive search for goodname and address matchups had to be undertaken, drawing the information from any sources possible, such as personal telephone listings, recollections from local alumni, a newly-published E.I.U. Alumni Association are attempting to establish some rapport with you, even though we personally know very few of you. Our inten tions are to acknowledge that you were and are a pivotal part of the Phi Sig” legacy that we all share in, having belonged to Delta Chapter-Phi Sigma Epsilon at East ern Illinois University. Since it is now gone, we represent only a finite number of brothers who, with every passing year potentially decreases in size through loss of ad dress contacts or that ultimate loss that we all face. We recognize that many of you have been away from EIU and Phi Sigma Epsilon for varying degrees of time - we also recognize that possibly you have had little time over the years to reflect on your memories of fraternity life. But chances are however, that Phi Sigma Epsilon at one time was the focal point of your life at Eastern, as it probably was for each of your frater nity brothers. Lifelong friendships were born early, nur tured and probably still exist among many of you as they do for many of us within our time period. It is logical however, that over time many of us will lose or have lost contact with each other, for many different reasons.

Reaching Into The PastWith this, the third newsletter, we now begin to reach

out to our older Phi Sigma Epsilon "Brothers of the Heart,” the group of those from the original year on campus, 1930, through 1959. With the inception of the Newsletter in Spring 1991, it was our goal to reach as many Phi Sigs as possible that represented the most likely group to have children attending college, specifically Eastern Illinois University. The reason for this was to determine how many children of former Phi Sigs at Eastern would be eligible for the P.S.E. Student Awards money that would be presented in Fall 1991, and yearly thereafter.

Some explanation is probably due those Phi Sig Brothers, both young and older, who are receiving this newsletter as their first newsletter. Therefore briefly within this article, is a chronological synopsis of events leading to the Student Awards beginnings.

Phi Sigma Epsilon was on campus from 1930 until it was merged with another larger, national fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa, in 1985 in what can best be described in today’s vernacular as somewhat analogous to a hostile takeover. Phi Sigma Kappa, still living at the Phi Sigma Epsilon Alumni Association-owned fraternity house then had their Charter “revoked” in the Fall of 1986 because of an incident at the fraternity house. The revocation precipitated a “destructive trashing” of the house shortly thereafter and the P.S.E. Alumni Association had no recourse but to close the house down. The Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity House and property were sold to an investor group in January 1987, who then demolished the house and constructed a much larger 4-story apartment complex on the 1509 Second Street address. More information about this time period is available in the first two newsletters.

The proceeds from the sale of the house, minus payment of a recent remodeling mortgage and all outstanding bills, left the Alumni Association with a sizeable investment, but nothing to spend it on. Suggestions in the interim between January 1987 and October 1989 convinced a new and energized P.S.E. Alumni Association Board that a scholarship-based idea of monetary awards called Student Awards should be instigated.

These would offer a no-strings-attached monetary award to any student at Eastern Illinois University whose father was a “Phi Sig” at E.I.U., plain and simple. It would be a way for P.S.E. to give something back to those who at one time gave to P.S.E. while in school.

To do this however, an extensive search for “good” name and address matchups had to be undertaken, drawing the information from any sources possible, such as personal telephone listings, recollections from local alumni, a newly-published E.I.U. Alumni Directory and personal contacts with many brothers. Time constraints and the likelihood of college-age children were the reason the initial listing of brothers only went back to 1960, with the follow-up research to pick up the group between 1930-1959. With the mailing of this newsletter, the entirety of all our known Phi Sigma Epsilon Alumni- Delta Chapter at Eastern Illinois University with known “good” addresses, will be kept abreast of their Alumni Association’s goings-on.

In reaching out to you brothers from that time period beyond 1959, we here at the P.S.E. Alumni Association are attempting to establish some rapport with you, even though we personally know very few of you. Our intentions are to acknowledge that you were and are a pivotal part of the “Phi Sig” legacy that we all share in, having belonged to Delta Chapter-Phi Sigma Epsilon at Eastern Illinois University. Since it is now gone, we represent only a finite number of brothers who, with every passing year potentially decreases in size through loss of address contacts or that ultimate loss that we all face.

We recognize that many of you have been away from EIU and Phi Sigma Epsilon for varying degrees of time - we also recognize that possibly you have had little time over the years to reflect on your memories of fraternity life. But chances are however, that Phi Sigma Epsilon at one time was the focal point of your life at Eastern, as it probably was for each of your fraternity brothers. Lifelong friendships were born early, nurtured and probably still exist among many of you as they do for many of us within our time period. It is logical however, that over time many of us will lose or have lost contact with each other, for many different reasons.

The Phi Sigma Epsilon Alumni Association counts among its most important objectives, that of being a repository for information relative to each brother’s address information, etc. or sadly, their demise. It is our fervent hope that you will partake of the information base we have accumulated regarding those who you may be seeking to find. Knowing that we still have many incomplete names and addresses and may not be able to accede to all of your requests, we implore your help with names and addresses that you may have or more unfortunately, with names of those no longer with us.

In reaching out to our older “Brothers of the Heart" we would also like to recognize their diversity of occupations. In researching your names and addresses we have found that, of course, many of you are enjoying your retirement - however, many of you continue your contribution to society in every capacity from Accountants to Zoology professors. In between that, you are Bankers, Educators & Adminstrators, Insurance men, Doctors, Dentists, Farmers, Company Owners, Entertainers, Investment and Financial Planners, College Professors and on and on.

Perusing past volumes of the E.I.U. “Warbler” yearbooks, has led to many interesting revelations about P.S.E.’s past on campus. Some of these will form the basis for upcoming articles in our newsletters. The P.S.E. Alumni Association would like to hear from any of our older “Brothers” about their lives, the fraternity life you experienced and any anecdotal stories about P.S.E. or anything that you may wish to share with others.

Finally, we would entertain any comment from all newsletter readers as to what articles or information you would like to see in your newsletter.

Free MemoriesIn the Fall of 1986, after the university had revoked

the Phi Sigma Kappa (PSK) charter (formerly Phi Sigma Epsilon) at 1509 Second Street, a “trashing” of the house contents and physical building took place. This was explained in more detail in the initial Spring 1991 newsletter. When this occurred, the Alumni Association Board shut the house down and began to assess the damages. Most everything that had been collected over a period of many years had either been stolen or totally destroyed, so what remained for the most part had varying degrees of damage. All of these scholastic, athletic or intercollegiate mementos that were marginally intact were collected by the Alumni Association and have been in storage since that time.

At this point, there is really no reason to continue to hold on to these items, since by legal decree Phi Sigma Epsilon can never be resurrected. Therefore, we the Phi Sigma Epsilon Alumni Association, are planning to list all of the PSE memorabilia in some detail and literally offer them to anyone on a first-come/first- serve basis. This listing will be in the Fall 1992 Newsletter.

You brothers may have an attachment to a certain placque, trophy, book, picture, etc. Indeed, some brothers have already indicated a specific item of interest. So, let us know what you think of the idea. Items may be picked up at Homecoming time or can be sent to you for the cost of shipping.

Identify & WinOld pictures of the brothers or new pictures of “old”

brothers are fun to peruse, because they represent memories of days past and present.

In one of the pictures shown here are some “old” mud football brothers, except for one, and in the other picture some “older” more refined brothers. Oh, did we tell ya — these pictures are part of a contest. Whoever can send the PSE Alumni Association the most correct names of those pictured in each picture will win their choice of a PSE sweatshirt as shown in the Homecoming '91 picture in this newsletter. Only one winner will be selected per picture. Duplication of correct identifications for each picture will be based upon the earliest postmark on your return envelope. Answers will be printed in the Fall 1992 newsletter or sent upon your request.

We would like to continue this feature in upcoming issues with pictures from different time periods, so everyone will get a chance at recognizing some of their old friends. Pictures sent can be returned intact to you.

Computer Listing UpdateThe Fall 1991 Newsletter featured a little article

about the PSE Alumni Association Composite Address List, a listing of as many correct addresses, phone numbers, year of graduation and nicknames of PSE brothers as could be assembled. That list contained about 300 names going back to 1960, but before it ever went out, efforts were made to go all the way back to 1930, the first year Phi Sigma Epsilon existed at EIU. That list was completed in January 1992 and was sent out to 5 brothers who had ordered them, among them Tom Strong (Slick) - 1967. Tom was so excited to find his big brother’s name and address (Jerry Mushrush - 1967) on the list, he immediately called him in Florida and has since called many other brothers.

This list now contains just under 600 correct addresses, etc. - of course, names and addresses are being

added to it all the time. When enough are assembled, a separate addendum sheet will be added to the main composite list prior to periodic reprinting of the entire address list. This listing, which lists brothers in last- name alphabetical order, still sells for $5. An additional listing of brothers in a different format has also been developed for the traveller or to complement the original composite address listing. It will also sell for $5 or both can be obtained for $8. All monies from this project as well as any others, goes back into the Student Awards fund, so that we may financially help as many students of PSE brothers at Eastern as possible. A small slice of each Composite Address List is shown in the accompanying picture, so that you may see the format arrangements.

Need A New Sweatshirt? In an attempt to locate any Phi Sigma Epsilon

memorabilia before it all disappears, the P.S.E. Alumni Association was fortunate to find some styles and colors of the original crest at a local merchant’s shop. They are silver and red with another version being gold and red. We also have a 4” Greek-letter sew-on, onto a heavy-duty sweatshirt.

The t-shirts are a 50-50 blend of fabric and the sweatshirts are heavy-duty Russell Athletic wear.

The P.S.E. Alumni Association is making them avail

able to any brother requesting them. They will sell for $10 for a t-shirt or $15 for sweatshirts. The sweatshirt especially is a great deal because a local merchant, Dale Bayles on Campus, is able to provide us with the Russell sweatshirts in seconds quality. However, they are virtually indistinguishable from first quality sweatshirts. Shipping costs are $3.00 per order. For a complete listing of different t-shirts/sweatshirts available, send request to our return address. See picture on the opposite page.

Homecoming 1991 Thanks Bill

The Phi Sigma Epsilon Alumni Association Homecoming Day 1991 meeting was held at the McDonald’s Restaurant within the original part of the Union on October 19, 1991. Pictured above are the brothers who attended the meeting. They are: (I to r) front row: Ron Eichhorn, Gary Brinkmeyer, Boone Chaney. Middle row: Tom Swanson, John Closs, Dick Swing, Kirk Davis, Tim Kearns, Pat Wesley (recognize the old jacket?). Back row: Dick Christman, Jim Luthe, Dick Carpenter, Jeff Moore, Jeff Estes.

We appreciate the turnout and hope we can increase it each year. Solicitation of comments from those present indicated general approval with the present activities and direction of the PSE Alumni Association. The following brothers were nominated to the PSE Alumni Association Board for the 1991 -1992 term: Gary Brinkmeyer, Boone Chaney, Jim Luthe, Jeff Moore, Marvin Randolph, Tom Swanson and Dick Swing.

The Phi Sigma Epsilon Alumni Association Board would like to express its thanks to Bill Barker - 1979, of Davenport, Iowa for the donation he made to the PSE Alumni Association. As with any monies received by the Association, it will go into the general pool of monies earning interest for the PSE Alumni Association Student Awards, given out near the Fall Semester inception each year. Thanks, Bill.

P.S.E. Tidbits- Homecoming 1992 is October 10,1992 with E.I.U. hosting Indiana State - should be a good one!- Charles Henry (1970) was married to Jean McLaren on March 30, 1992 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Reception is set for July 25, 1992 at The Campout.- Roger Haberer (1966) has moved up into the ranks of Big Ten football officialdom. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it and Roger is more than happy to accommodate. He was an official in the Liberty Bowl this past December and may be seen on the TV broadcasted Big Ten football games on Saturdays, depending on his schedule and the broadcast schedule.- The niece of Dave Carrell (1972) was an eager participant in her first Olympics Pairs Ice Skating competition recently held in the French Alps. Her name is Jennifer Meno and she was the dynamite-looking red- haired young lady who along with partner Scott Wend- land ended up in 10th place overall in the world-class competition for the U.S.A.- Individual brothers from both ends of the state of Illinois have been recently expressing the desire to organize and get together as a Phi Sig group - this would probably be within the St. Louis area as well as the Chicago area. As you can see from the golf outing article in this newsletter, brothers are starting to reach out to get together again. Let us know (P.S.E. Alumni Association) if we may be of any help.
