a) Be careful to avoid finger injuriesby the needle when sewing.

b) Make sure you unplug the powercord whenever you want to change theneedle, sewing foot, bobbin or needleplate, when you want to clean and oilthe machine or have to interrupt sewingand leave the machine for a while.

c) Be sure to use only a 15-watt lightbulb in the sewing lamp.

Removing the carrying case coverTo lift off the carrying case cover, fold thehandle to the rear, as indicated byan arrow.Then lift the cover off.

Opening the hinged top coverAlso fold the handle toward the rear. Swingcover 31 backwards. On Model 1027 astitch chart is found on the inside of thiscover (A).

Removing and opening theswing-out armReach under the swing-out arm with yourleft hand (B), swing it out toward the left (C)and lift it out (D). Open its lid (E) to accommodate thread and accessories.

Electrical connectionTake the foot control out of the machine.Push plug B into the machine socket andplug C into the wall outlet. Press masterswitch 34. Your machine is now readyforsewing.

Foot controlPlace the foot control under the table. Pressdown the pedal, and the machine startssewing. The more the pedal is depressed,the faster the machine runs.

When you put the machine away, the footcontrol is placed in the machine again asshown in the illustration (A).

Placing spool of thread on pinA Small spools of thread:

Push unreeling disc Don the spool holderin front of the spool of thread.

B Large spools of thread:Push unreeling discs D and Eon the spoolholder in front of the spool of thread, asshown in the drawing.

C Second spool holder:This is contained in the accessory box andis used for bobbin winding and twin-needle sewing. Insert the spool holder inhole F and place a spooi of thread on it.

Upper threadingRaise the sewing foot.Pull the thread from the spool and draw itinto slot A (to the left of guide C), from belowinto slot Band take-up lever 52. Then drawit back into slot B, into thread guide 50 andinto the right thread guide Don the needleholder.

For two-needle sewing, draw one threadinto slot Ato the left of guide C, and draw theother to the right of guide C. One of thethreads is then pulled into the right threadguide, the other into the left.

Threading the needleThread the needle from front to back.

Disengaging the sewing mechanismBefore you start winding the bobbin, disengage the sewing mechanism.Hold the hand wheel steady and turn thestop motion knob toward you. After bobbinwinding, tighten the knob again by turningit away from you.

Winding the bobbin from a secondspool (A)Disengage the sewing mechanism. Insertthe spool holder and place a spool of threadon it. Place a bobbin on spindle 47 so thatpin Centers slot D. Pull the thread from thespool, lead it around bobbin tensionstud 55, wind it around the bobbin a fewtimes and push the bobbin toward the rightto start the winder. When the bobbin is fullpush it toward the left and take it out. Thenre-engage the sewing mechanism.Leave the top cover open during bobbinwinding.

Winding the bobbin through the needleeye (B)Raise the sewing foot and bring the needleto its highest point. Disengage the sewingmechanism. Place a bobbin on spindle 47so that pin Centers slot D. Draw the needlethread under the sewing foot, up and intoslot 54, and from above around bobbintension stud 55. Then wind a few turns ofthread on the bobbin.Push the bobbin toward the right to startthe bobbin winder. Push the full bobbintoward the left and take it out. Re-engagethe sewing mechanism.

Removing bobbin case and bobbinOpen free arm cover 48. Pull out latch K,then lift out the bobbin case, release thelatch and take out the bobbin. The bobbincannot fall out as long as you keep latch Kpulled out.

Inserting the bobbinInsert the filled bobbin into the bobbin caseso that the thread unreels toward the back(A>. Then draw the thread into slot B andunder the spring into eye C.

Inserting the bobbin casePull out latch K and push the bobbin caseonto stud B, making sure slot A is up. Releasethe latch and lightly press against the bobbincase to make sure it has snapped intoplace.

Drawing up the bobbin threadHold the needle thread a little taut. Turnhand wheel 32 toward you until the needlemovesdownand upagainandthetake-uplever is up. Pull the bobbin thread out of theneedle hole and lay both threads toward theleft and back under the sewing foot.

Presser bar lifterLever 42 has three positions:A = The sewing foot is raised. (Before you

remove the work, turn the hand wheeltoward you to raise the needle andtake-up lever 52.)

B = The sewing foot is raised further forinserting extra-thick materials.

C The sewing foot is lowered for sewing.

Thread cutterThe thread cutter is an oblique slot locatedat the back of the presser bar. Raise thesewing foot. Pull the work out of themachine toward the back. Draw the threadsinto the cutter slot and pulithem downwardsto cut them.

Upper tension (41)A = Setting mark. The normal tension

setting is in the white range between3 and 5. The higher the number, thetighter the tension.

Lower tensionB = Regulating screw.

Turn it leftfora loosertension, or rightfor a tighter tension.

C = Both tensions are correctD = Upper tension too loose or lower

tension too tight.E Lower tension too loose or upper

tension too tight.

The correct lower tensionLet the bobbin case with a full bobbin hangdown freely by the thread. It must not slidedown by its own weight, but should gradually move downwards when you jerk yourhand upwards lightly.

For example, if you want to sew anelastic blindstitch, push buttons 1 5 and1 6, select a stitch length between 1 and 4.This stitch can also be sewn with model1025.

Dropping the machine feedOpen free arm cover 48. Push the drop-feedcontrol toward B. The feed dog is dropped(for embroidering, darning, etc.)For sewing, push the drop-feed controltoward A.

Changing the needleRaise the needle bar. Then hold the needle,loosen screw A and pull the needle outdownwards. Insert a new System1 30/705 H needle (with the flat side of itsshank facing toward the back) and push itup as far as it will go. Then tighten screw A.

Twin needles with a needle distance of1.4mm may be used for zigzag and utilitystitch sewing.

Changing the sewing footTo release the sewing foot push the redbutton A. When attaching a sewing footmake sure stud B enters slot C. Place thesewing foot under the sewing foot holderand hold it in place with your left hand.

Lower presser bar lifter 42 and at the sametime reposition the sewing foot so that studB fits in slot C. Hole E and screw Dare usedfor attaching an edge guide. Screw F servesto secure the sewing foot holder on thepresser bar.

Special sewing feetA Blindstitch foot

Blindstich guide E is adjusted by turningscrew D.

B Zipper footFirst insert its rear pin into groove F, thenpush its front pin into groove G. Thezipper foot can be adjusted sideways forstitching along the right or left zipperchain.

C Darning footRemove the sewing foot holder andsecure the darning foot in position withscrew H.

Buttonhole settingsPush button 1 9 (A). Regulate the stitchdensity in the buttonhole range of the stitchlength control (B). Attach the buttonholefoot. Insert the filler cord as follows (C):Place it over the rear lug of the foot, pull ittaut and clamp it in front lug D.As you sew, arrow E moves along scale F.This serves to determine the buttonholelength.

Sewing buttonholesPull the bottom of the buttonhole foot forward as far as it will go.1 Sew first buttonhole seam. Turn hand

wheel torward you to raise the needle.2 Push button 20 and keep it depressed

until the machine has sewn 4 to 6 bar-tacking stitches. Raise the needle. Thenrelease the button.

3 Push button 21 . Sew the second buttonhole seam the same length as the first.Raise the needle.

5 Sew a few tying stitches. Turn the handwheel toward you until the take-up leveris up. Remove the fabric, pull the fillercord taut and trim.

Changing the light bulbPush the light bulb up, turn it toward Aand pull it out. Insert the new bulb so thatits pins slide in slots C. Push it up and turn ittoward B.

Cleaning and oilingTilt needle plate 38 up at the back (A) andtake it out (B). Clean the machine feed andthe parts in the vicinity of the sewing hookwith a sàft brush. Do not oil the machinebecause it is maintenance-free. All you haveto do is put a drop of oil into the hook raceway now and then.

1. Machine skips stitches

Needle not inserted correctly.

Wrong needle used.

Needle bent or blunt.

Machine threaded improperly.

Needle too thin for thread used.

2. Needle thread breaks

For any of the above reasons.

Thread tension too strong.

Poor-quality or knotty thread used, orthread that has become too dry byexcessive storage.

3. Needle breaks

Needle not pushed up as far as it will go.

Needle bent.

Needle too thin or too thick.

Needle bent and strikes needle platebecause work is pushed or pulled.

Bobbin case improperly inserted.

Push needle up as far as it will go, itsflat shank side facing toward the back.

Insert system 1 30/705 H needle.

Insert new needle.

Check threading.

Select needle according to Needle andThread Chart.

See par. 1 above.

Regulate thread tensions.

Use only good-quality thread.

Insert new needle and push it up as far asit will go.

Insert new needle.

See Needle and Thread Chart.

Let machine feed the work alone.Only guide the material lightly.

When inserting the bobbin case, pressagainst it until it snaps into place.

Check upper and lower tensions.

Use first-class thread only.

During bobbin winding, do not holdthread in hand, but pass it through thebobbin tension stud.

Thread machine properly and checkboth tensions.

5. Machine feeds irregularly or not at all

Lint has accumulated between toothrows of feed dog.

Feed dog dropped. (Reverse-feedcontrol is at left.)

Remedy:Cause:

4. Seam is not uniform

Tension out of adjustment.

Thread too thick, knotty or hard.

Bobbin thread wound unevenly.

Kinks appear on top and bottom ofmaterial.

6. Machine runs with difficulty

Thread ends in hook raceway.

Remove needle plate and clean out lint.

Flick reverse-feed control to the right.

Remove thread ends and put a drop ofoil into hook raceway.
