8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Hail to the Lord's Anointed,

great David's greater Son!

hail, in the time appointed,

his reign on earth begun!

He comes to break oppression,

to set the captive free,

to take away transgression,

and rule in equity.

2. He comes with succour speedy

to those who suffer wrong;

to help the poor and needy,

and bid the weak be strong;

to give them songs for sighing,

their darkness turn to light,

whose souls, condemned and dying,

were precious in his sight.

3. He shall come down like showers

upon the fruitful earth,

and love, joy, hope, like flowers,

spring in his path to birth:

before him on the mountains

shall peace, the herald, go;

and righteousness in fountains

from hill to valley flow.

4. Kings shall bow down before him,

and gold and incense bring;

all nations shall adore him,

his praise all people sing:

to him shall prayer unceasing

and daily vows ascend;

his kingdom still increasing,

a kingdom without end.

Words: based on Psalm 72, James Montgomery (1771-1854)

Music: Crüger, adapted from Johann Crüger (1598-1662) by William Henry Monk (1823-1889)

(Ancient & Modern – 99)

Collect

Merciful God,

you have prepared for those who love you

such good things as pass our understanding:

pour into our hearts such love toward you

that we, loving you in all things and above all things,

may obtain your promises,

which exceed all that we can desire;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

First Reading – 1 Kings 3.5-12

At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, ‘Ask

what I should give you.’ And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love

to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in

4

righteousness, and in uprightness of heart towards you; and you have kept for him

this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And

now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father

David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And

your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so

numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an

understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil;

for who can govern this your great people?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had

asked this. God said to him, ‘Because you have asked this, and have not asked for

yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for

yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word.

Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you

and no one like you shall arise after you.’

Second Reading – Romans 8.26-39

The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought,

but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who

searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit

intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work

together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of

his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those

whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and

those whom he justified he also glorified.

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He

who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him

also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God

who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised,

who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us

from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or

nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all

day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For

I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present,

nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all

creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

5

Gradual Hymn*

1. Seek ye first the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness,

and all these things shall be added unto you;

Allelu-, alleluia:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, allelu, alleluia!

2. Ask, and it shall be given unto you,

seek and ye shall find,

knock, and the door shall be opened unto you;

Allelu-, alleluia:

3. We shall not live by bread alone,

but by every word

that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord;

Allelu-, alleluia:

Gospel – Matthew 13.31-33,44-52

Jesus put before the crowd another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed

that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has

grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and

make nests in its branches.’ He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like

yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was

leavened.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid;

then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl

of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of

every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets

but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and

separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there

will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Therefore every

scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household

who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’

6

Offertory Hymns*

The two hymns are sung one straight after the other, to the same tune

1. The great love of God is revealed in the Son,

who came to this earth to redeem everyone.

That love, like a stream flowing clear to the sea,

makes clean every heart that from sin would be free.

2. It binds the whole world, every barrier it breaks,

the hills it lays low, and the mountains it shakes.

It’s yours, it is ours, see how lavishly given –

the pearl of great price, and the treasure of heaven!

Words: Daniel Thambyrajah Niles (1908-1970)

Music: Stowey, English traditional melody. Harmonised by Erik Routley (1917-1982) – CP 616

(Hymns of Glory Songs of Praise – 358)

1. Come, learn of God’s kingdom, the kingdom of light,

its dawning dispelling the darkness of night;

the light of God’s glory is shining abroad,

in splendour proclaiming that Jesus is Lord.

2. Come, seek for God’s kingdom, the kingdom of Christ,

a pearl without equal, a treasure unpriced,

a city unshaken the years cannot move,

where life everlasting is founded on love.

3. Come, enter God’s kingdom, the gates are flung wide;

to win us our freedom the Saviour has died:

the keys of the kingdom are theirs who proclaim

the word of the gospel and faith in his name.

4. Inherit God’s kingdom; for Jesus declares

to those who confess him, the kingdom is theirs:

O come then rejoicing his glories to sing,

as heirs of that kingdom where Christ is the King.

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith

Music: Stowey, English traditional melody. Harmonised by Erik Routley (1917-1982) – CP 616

(Spring Harvest Worship Years – 61)

Communion Anthem*

Jesu, joy of man’s desiring,

holy wisdom, love most bright;

drawn by thee, our souls aspiring

soar to uncreated light.

Word of God, our flesh that fashioned,

with the fire of life impassioned,

striving still to truth unknown,

soaring, dying round Thy throne.

Through the way where hope is guiding,

hark, what peaceful music rings;

where the flock, in thee confiding,

drink of joy from deathless springs.

Theirs is beauty’s fairest pleasure;

theirs is wisdom’s holiest treasure.

Thou dost ever lead Thine own

in the love of joys unknown.

Words: Robert Bridges (1844-1930)

Music: From Cantata BWV 147, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Communion Hymns*

1. Father, I place into your hands

the things I cannot do.

Father, I place into your hands

the things that I’ve been through.

Father, I place into your hands

the way that I should go,

for I know I always can trust you.

2. Father, I place into your hands

my friends and family.

Father, I place into your hands

the things that trouble me.

Father, I place into your hands

the person I would be,

for I know I always can trust you.

3. Father, we love to see your face,

we love to hear your voice.

Father, we love to sing your praise

and in your name rejoice.

Father, we love to walk with you

and in your presence rest,

for we know we always can trust you.

4. Father, I want to be with you

and do the things you do.

Father, I want to speak the words

that you are speaking too.

Father, I want to love the ones

that you will draw to you,

for I know that I am one with you.

Post Communion Prayer

God of our pilgrimage,

you have led us to the living water:

refresh and sustain us

as we go forward on our journey,

in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

8

Final Hymn*

1. Now thank we all our God

with hearts and hands and voices,

who wondrous things hath done,

in whom his world rejoices;

who from our mother's arms

hath blessed us on our way

with countless gifts of love,

and still is ours today.

2. O may this bounteous God

through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts

and blessed peace to cheer us;

and keep us in his grace,

and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all ills

in this world and the next.

3. All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given,

the Son, and him who reigns

with them in highest heaven,

the one eternal God,

whom earth and heaven adore;

for thus it was, is now,

and shall be evermore.

Words: Nun danket alle Gott, Martin Rinkart (1586-1649), translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878)

Music: Nun danket, melody by Johann Crüger in Praxis Pietatis Melica, 1647,

harmony chiefly from Felis Mendelssohn Batholdy Lobgesang (1840) (Ancient & Modern – 739)

6:00pm Evensong

Psalm 75 confitebimur tibi

T A Walmisley

1 Unto thee O God do | we give | thanks :

yea unto | thee do | we give | thanks.

2 Thy Name | also is ∙ so | nigh :

and that do thy | wond-rous | works de- | clare.

3 When I receive the | con-gre- | gation :

I shall judge ac- | cor-ding | un-to | right.

4 The earth is weak and all the in- | habiters ∙ there- | of :

I | bear up ∙ the | pil-lars | of it.

5 I said unto the fools; * | Deal not ∙ so | madly :

and to the ungodly; * | Set not | up your | horn.

6 Set not up your | horn on | high :

and | speak not ∙ with a | stiff — | neck.

7 For promotion cometh neither from the east,

| nor from ∙ the | west :

nor | yet — | from the | south.

8 And why? * | God is ∙ the | Judge :

he putteth down one and | set-teth | up an- | other.

9 For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup and the | wine is | red :

it is full mix’d and he | pour-eth | out of ∙ the | same.

10 As for the | dregs there- | of :

all the ungodly of the earth shall | drink them ∙ and | suck them | out.

11 But I will talk of the | God of | Jacob :

and | praise — | him for | ever.

12 All the horns of the ungodly | also ∙ will I | break :

and the horns of the | righteous ∙ shall | be ex- | alted.

Glory | be ∙ to the | Father,

and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be :

world | with-out | end, A- | men.

Magnificat – Luke 1.46-55 Henry Smart

1 My soul doth | magnify ∙ the | Lord :

and my spirit hath re- | joic’d in | God my | Saviour.

2 For | he hath ∙ re- | garded :

the | lowli-ness | of his | handmaiden.

†3 For be- | hold, from | henceforth :

all gene- | rations ∙ shall | call me | blessed.

10

4 For he that is mighty hath | magni-fied | me :

and | ho-ly | is his | Name.

5 And his mercy is on | them that | fear him :

through- | out all | ge-ne- | rations.

6 He hath shew’d | strength ∙ with his | arm :

he hath scatter’d the proud in the imagi- | na-tion | of their | hearts.

7 He hath put down the | mighty ∙ from their | seat :

and hath ex- | alted ∙ the | humble ∙ and | meek.

8 He hath fill’d the | hungry ∙ with good | things :

Byron’s Last Journey

Did you know that the ‘mad, bad,

dangerous to know, scholar,

freedom fighter, athlete, lover

and poet Lord Byron’s body

rested in The Crown Hotel in

Oakham on its way to Hucknall

Church, for burial?

Newstead Abbey still retains its idyllic

charm and it is easy to see how it

inspired Byron to write some of the

most romantic poetry of his time.

Visitors can see Byron’s private

apartments as well as letters, objects

and furniture that belonged to him.

The Abbey still retains the original

medieval cloisters, a Gothic Revival

Library, a baronial Great Hall and the

original façade of the old priory

church on the West Front. The

Abbey with over 300 acres of

parkland and formal gardens for all

tastes was Byron’s home from 1808

to 1814.

Due to Byron’s tempestuous past it

was considered not fitting for him to

be buried in his ancestral home of

Newstead Abbey and that the nearby

Hucknall Parish Church was to be his

final resting place. St. Mary Magdalene

attracts visitors from all over the

world as well as being a worshipping

church with a full range of services

and its literary connections. The

church has impressive Kempe stained

glass windows, memorials to Byron

are both inside and in the churchyard.

The 19th Century Lady Chapel

reveals the story of the computer

connections of Byron’s daughter Ada,

Contess of Lovelace.

Should you be tempted to a

warm welcome at St. Mary

Magdalene, Hucknall, experience

the romance and mystery of

Newstead Abbey, a beautiful

historic house set in glorious

landscaped gardens, note

Tuesday 23rd September in you

diaries. The Friends of All Saint’s

Church, Oakham are arranging a

coach trip to see both. Posters

and further information to

follow.
