Gloria

1. Glory be to God in heaven, songs of praise and peace we bring,

thankful hearts and voices raising, to creation’s Lord we sing.

Lord, we thank you, Lord, we bless you; glory be to God our King,

glory be to God our King.

2. Lamb of God, who on your shoulder bore the load of this world’s sin,

only Son of God the Father, you have brought us peace within.

Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy; now your glorious reign begin,

now your glorious reign begin.

Music: Cwm Rhondda, John Hughes (1873-1932)

Collect

Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you in their death as in their life:

grant that your Church, inspired by their teaching and example,

and made one by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation,

Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Acts 12.1-11

King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had

James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened

Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the

Passover. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two

chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light

shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up

Page 4: Pewsheet - 26 June 2016 (Whissendine)

4

quickly.’And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, ‘Fasten your belt and

put on your sandals.’He did so. Then he said to him, ‘Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.’ Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was

happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate

leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to

himself and said, ‘Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.’

Gospel – Matthew 16.13-19

When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who

do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of

the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you,

you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you

bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’

Offertory Hymn

1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness.

Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people;

light for the world to see.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness.

Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.

2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled.

Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has power to save us.

Make us your living voice.

3. Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst.

Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed.

Page 5: Pewsheet - 26 June 2016 (Whissendine)

5

4. Longing for shelter, many are homeless.

Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others,

walls made of living stone.

5. Many the gifts, many the people,

many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another,

making your kingdom come.

Words: Bernadette Farrell (b 1957) Music: Christ Be Our Light, Bernadette Farrell (b 1957) © 1993 Bernadette Farrell/OCP Publications (Ancient & Modern – 42)

Communion Hymn

1. Here is bread, here is wine, Christ is with us – he is with us;

break the bread, drink the wine, Christ is with us here.

2. Here is grace, here is peace,

Christ is with us – he is with us; know his grace, find his peace –

feast on Jesus here.

In this bread there is healing, in this cup there’s life for ever;

In this moment, by the Spirit, Christ is with us here.

3. Here we are, joined in one,

Christ is with us – he is with us; we’ll proclaim till he comes –

Jesus crucified.

Words and Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950)

Post Communion Prayer

Lord God, the source of truth and love,

keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, united in prayer and the breaking of bread,

and one in joy and simplicity of heart, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Faculty Applications

Oakham PCC have applied for

permissions for two projects to be undertaken in the autumn.

A. A development of the memorial garden on the south side of the

church: Following a generous offer from Oakham in Bloom, it is

proposed to replant the south side garden as a memorial space. We are grateful for all who, up to now, have

kept this area looking so beautiful, particularly, particularly Graham

Scothern for his recent work, and we are sure that this new scheme will

only enhance this area of the churchyard.

B. Proposal for the replacement of the boiler: A new boiler is proposed

to be installed in the upstairs parish office.

Public notification was displayed on Wednesday. Parishioners have 28

days from then to lodge any objections. More detailed plans are

available for inspection in the parish office or on the website.

Bereavement Support

Group

For the last 3 years we have been

running a Bereavement Support group in the Parish Hall. It has been for

people of all faiths or none, for those recently bereaved or those who are still aching after many years.

However, particularly since Hildred left, it has become clear that we are

not meeting people’s needs, so the meetings on the first Thursday of the

month in the Parish Hall will now stop. We are planning to re-launch

the service in the autumn, in a different format. To help provide

something useful, we have drawn up a short questionnaire to ask those who

are bereaved what would help. If you have lost a loved one – recently

or further back, please fill in one of the Questionnaires which will be at

the back of Oakham Church, or from the website. Sian Cheverton.
