Minister’s Letter Dear Friends,
It’s one thing to have a gift but another put-
ting it to good or even the best possible
use. In the Baroque period, the German
composer Johann Sebastien Bach (1685-
1750) used to sign his manuscripts with
the letters SDG – shorthand for the Latin
‘Soli Deo Gloria’ which translates as “to
God alone be the glory” or AMDG –
shorthand for the Latin ‘Ad Maiorem Dei
Gloriam’ rendered “for the greater glory of
God” – sublime music serving the supreme
purpose.
In similar vein, the poet Gerard Manley
Hopkins (1844-1889) begins his famous
poem ‘Pied Beauty’ with the line, ”Glory be
to God for dappled things” and later on
writes “All things counter, original, spare,
strange . . . He fathers-forth whose beauty
is past change: Praise him.”
Life involves change even if, for some
stretches, it can be so imperceptible as to
be all but discounted (wrongly) so subtle
are its workings. But autumn, in particular,
is one of those times when change is
especially noticeable whether in the wider
world of nature or the realm of education
for our children and young people.
In church life too, a discerning spirit
becomes aware of change, real or
potential, that God is stirring up within and
around us – perhaps a dramatic disclosure
or unsought circumstance, or, more often,
a fresh perspective on a familiar issue. But
while God is the ultimate source of
change, as well as our abiding resource as
we comes to terms with change, the
constancy or loving faithfulness of God,
embodied in Christ, remains paramount
whatever the season.
For that reason, the phrase that adorns
most church buildings “To the glory of
God” is a fitting reminder that in the
numerous activities that take place in the
life of our congregation the purpose, aim
and motivation is to align (and when we
fail, as we will because we’re human:
realign) them with the greater goal of
glorifying God made known in the grace
of Jesus Christ.
SDG and AMDG,
Allen Sleith

HILLSBOROUGH ALLSORTS will resume
the Bread and Cheese Lunches on Thursday 6th October in the Parish Rooms of the Parish Church. These lunches are a community effort providing home made soup, bread and cheese with a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit all for £4, as well as giving the opportunity to meet with friends and neighbours from the village and beyond. The money raised (apart from minimal expenses) all goes to support the work of Christian Aid—last year we were able to forward £2,700 to the Belfast Office. This work is ongoing—apart from responding to emergency appeal it supports projects overseas such as a current project in Kenya where drought resistant seeds, training in special farming techniques and sand dams to collect water—all help the people to help themselves. So, come along on a Thursday 12.15—1.30pm, you will be made most welcome or if you feel you would like to become involved in this community effort, please contact me on 9268 2266.

I would like to take this opportunity, on
behalf of Kathryn, Christopher, Gavin and
myself, to express our thanks and
appreciation for all the care shown, the
sympathy expressed to us and the prayers
offered for us at the time of Ruth’s death.
The many letters, cards and phone calls
were all a source of great comfort and
strength. Our thanks are also due to
Diane and the members of the choir for
the part they played in the Thanksgiving
Service and to those who provided the
refreshments after the service.
Ruth bore the early years of her illness
with great fortitude and a remarkable
degree of good humour while she was still
able to relate to those around her. The
latter years were much more difficult and
we are all grateful to God that He has now
released her into that fuller life which we
believe is now hers through her faith in the
resurrection.
Once again thank you for all your support.

As I write this, our new P.W. year has begun and our first meeting has taken place. Our speaker at that meeting was Kathryn Harte who gave us a very informative account of the work of ‘The Big House,’ a Christian charity aimed at helping young people experience God’s love, especially during difficult times in their lives. Kathryn made us aware of the diverse range of problems which some young people were experiencing and of the valuable work being done by ‘The Big House’ team to support and bring God’s love to them. We were pleased to learn more about this charity which the P.W. mission fund is supporting this year. Our next event is our annual P.W. service on 9
th October at 10.30 am when we will
welcome, as speakers, Ron and Hilary McCartney who have been engaged in mission work in Pakistan. Then, on 18
th October, we look forward to
hearing from and getting to know our new minister, Rev. Dr. Allen Sleith. On 15
th
November, we will welcome Deirdre Humphries who will be speaking and demonstrating craft ideas under the title ‘Christmas in a Hurry.’ This will be a ‘Visitors’ Evening’ and prior to the event we will issue a special invitation to the ladies of the congregation to join us and discover more about us. Finally, at our Christmas meeting on 6
th December,
Graeme and Maureen Lowe will talk about and show examples of handcrafted items from Bangkok. We offer an open invitation to the ladies of the congregation who are interested in attending any of these activities.

Cheick will soon be 18 years old and PLAN has forwarded a Birthday card to me. The GB has kindly undertaken sponsorship for this year and I have left it in to them so the girls will have an opportunity to sign it, and I will leave it on the table in the vestibule for any member of the congregation to sign as well, if they so wish. Thank you, Grace Davin
STOREHOUSE
Just a reminder of the need for ongoing support for many families in the community to receive practical help in the form of food parcels from Storehouse. It was very kind of The Co-Op to send some items down to the Church which were suitable for our weekly collection and I noticed they had done likewise to the Parish church when I delivered our collection there after the service last Sunday. Please think about maybe adding some basic non-perishable items to the list as you do your weekly shop, and many thanks to those who regularly contribute.

The Link is our monthly contemporary Praise Evening. It is a place where people of all ages can come together to explore the Christian faith through media clips, interviews, and worshipping the Living God. Over the past year we have been hearing from various members of our congregation who have told us about how God has worked in their lives. Most recently, we enjoyed getting to know Allen in our September interview, and look forward to hearing from Karen Thompson and Carson McMullan on 23
rd October and 27
th November respectively.
Worship is led by our own ‘Link Band’ which is made up of young musicians from our church, who lead using a combination of modern and traditional worship songs. Some of these may be new to you, but if you want a ‘sneak peak’ at what we’ll be singing each month to familiarise yourself with the songs, visit The Link section of our church website. If you have had the opportunity to attend The Link we hope that you have found it engaging, and challenging; and if you haven’t had the opportunity yet we hope that you can join us for the next one. The dates for this term are 23
rd October, 27
th November and WEDNESDAY 21
st
December for our Christmas Link Service, at which we will be joined by members of Hope Church and St. Malachy’s. Many of you have commented about how much work goes into set-up for each evening. As The Link continues we are appealing for volunteers to assist with the tidy-up of the hall after we are finished for approximately 30 minutes. If you would be willing to assist us with this please contact Ashley on [email protected] or 07482236738.
SPARK is our new Youth Club for children in P5-Year 8. It runs on a Friday evening from 6.30-8pm and includes a wide range of activities such as Football, Unihock, Pool, Table-Tennis, Games Consoles, Tuck Shop, Foosball, Air Hockey, Craft, and more; and we end each evening with a short epilogue. SPARK has started very strongly and continues to grow. If you have a child, grandchild, or even neighbour, encourage them to come along for a fun-filled night. If you would like to volunteer to be part of our leadership team, even on a rota basis, please get in touch with Ashley.
Drop In is our newest programme for Young People in Year 8-14. It runs on a Friday afternoon from 4-6pm. Come along to sit and chat or make use of the numerous activities on offer such as Football, Unihock, Pool, Table-Tennis, Games Consoles, Foosball, Air Hockey. We also have snacks available from our Tuck Shop or new Coffee Bar. If you would like to volun-teer to be a leader at Drop In, please get in touch with Ashley.
Summer with HPC Youth
We have had a busy summer programme full of activities for children and young people. We kicked off the summer by bringing a group of young people to Ireland’s largest Christian festival – Summer Madness. It was a very wet weekend, not ideal for camping- but it didn’t dampen the spirits of our group as they enthusiastically engaged with the programme, and saw God moving in incredible ways.
We enjoyed the two week-long summer schemes. For primary school children we ran Landlubbers, for which we turned the Orr Hall into a Desert Island. On the island we followed a map to find the treasure, as well as following Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Other activities included playing games, singing, drama, crafts, a water fight, and a trip to the beach at Crawfordsburn.
Over recent months we have linked with St. Malachay’s and Hope Church under the name ‘Fusion’. At the start of the summer we had our first Fusion event - a pizza and games night which saw around 30 young people from the three churches meet together. Our summer scheme for teenagers was the Fusion Summer Week, which focused on ‘The 4 Points’. During the week 40 young people and 15 leaders from the 3 churches came together for various games and challenges, as we continued to grow closer together. We ended the week with a daytrip to Dublin Zoo which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
There were a number of other events for children and young people throughout July and August including Ten Pin Bowling, Movie Nights, and Games Nights.
At the end of the Summer I was delighted
to join with other leaders in the Mourne
Mountains to supervise our two Silver
groups for their Qualifying Expedition for
the Duke of Edinburgh Award; and in the
Wicklow Mountains for their Gold
Qualifying. Congratulations to all of the
participants for completing challenging
expeditions, and we look forward to them
completing their awards in the coming
months.

PCI PUBLICATIONS
As you may have read in the September edition of the Presbyterian Herald, 2014 the General Assembly commissioned a publications review to assess the viability of the magazines produced by PCI. This review has now been completed and was presented to the General Council in March 2016. Based on the review, the Council agreed that ReachOut magazine will cease with the December2016/January 2017 edition and that some of its content will filter into an updated and revised Presbyterian Herald, launching in February 2017. To assist with planning content for the revised Presbyterian Herald, we are seeking feedback from current readers and non-readers. For this purpose surveys were printed in the September Herald and October/November ReachOut magazines for readers to fill out and send back. We would encourage as many as possible to respond. To assist people to respond, the survey is also available online. https://www.presbyterianireland.org/Resources/Presbyterian-Herald/Herald-Reader-Survey.aspx A survey is also available for those who do not subscribe to any PCI magazine. https://www.presbyterianireland.org/Resources/Presbyterian-Herald/Non-Reader-Survey.aspx All feedback is greatly appreciated and will help us produce a more relevant and interesting magazine for our readers.

GOOD RELATIONS
For those concerned about the refugee sit-uation, two events in the Belfast International Festival may be of interest: A film in Queen’s Film Theatre entitled
Lampedusa in Winter – on Wednesday 19
th October @ 6pm
A talk by Yvette Cooper on Fixing the Refugee Crisis in The Elmwood Hall on Thursday 20
th October @ 7.30pm
Book:online: belfastinternationalartsfestival.com / phone: 02890 892707 Also, EMBRACE has highlighted the need for practical help for the refugees presently in Northern Ireland or who will be arriving shortly. This includes: General items such as: Umbrellas,
Slippers, raincoats, School stationery,
School bags, English or Arabic/English
diaries for recording appointments, Basic
English or English/Arabic language
support books for children and adults, Hot
water bottles, clothes drying rails, new
packs of underwear.
Travel (2-pin to UK) adaptors: for
charging smartphones etc.
Vouchers – Those will be allocated by the team of key workers working individually with the families and in accordance to needs e.g. locally accessible supermarket, chemists, etc.
Large cooking pots, frying pans and
roasting trays: Many of the families
requested these as they tend to make
quite large quantities of rice/casseroles/
soups etc.
Rugs: All families, without exception,
were keen to get rugs for their homes
within the first two weeks of arrival. As
they mostly take their shoes off inside
the home but are not used to laminate
flooring/lino/tiles, they wanted to buy
large rugs for their living room (e.g.
1.5m X 2m) and smaller rugs for
bedrooms.
Shoe racks: Same as above, families
were keen to have storage for their
shoes.
Basic Tool kits: simple kits for DIY
jobs around the house (hammer,
screwdrivers etc.)
Translink transport cards: families
have no transport in general and
depend on public transport to get to
their English classes and health
appointments.
Blenders: The families have a
tradition of using blenders to make
humus and other Syrian typical dishes.
This is much appreciated also by the
families with very small children to
prepare homemade baby food.
Toys : New or in excellent condition
toys can be very useful – this does not
include teddy bears and cuddly toys.
Non-perishable food supplies:
(Please note that most families will
only eat Halal meat so please avoid
tinned meats as well as any pork
derivatives.)

me.
