We have an extensive range of full-time courses which willprovide you with the necessary tools, experience,knowledge and qualifications to enable you to pursue yourchosen career path. This will all be supported by ourindustry specialist tutors and taught in our first classfacilities.

Our courses ensure that you benefit from both the theoryand practical skills you will learn whilst you are here, givingyou the edge when progressing on, whether that be ontohigher education or into employment. Our tutors areprofessionals with their subject areas and have years ofexperience within their industry. They are committed tosupporting you in achieving your chosen pathway and willwork with you to ensure you are equipped with the skillsand qualifications to allow you to succeed.

Staying in educationdoesn’t mean staying in school!Young people are now required to stay in education or traininguntil the end of the academic year in which they turn 17.

In August 2015 the participation age will rise again, youngpeople will be required to stay in training or education untiltheir 18th Birthday. This will start from the academic year2015/16.

This doesn’t mean that young people must stay in school.They will be able to choose three post-16 options:

• Continue in Full-time education in school or college• Take on an Apprenticeship or traineeship• Part-time accredited education or training if they are in

full-time employment, self employed or volunteering for at least 20 hours per week.

In September 2014, Ofsted’s review of Peterborough CityCouncil stated “some young people are not accessing theavailable vocational programmes that are better suited to theirneeds”; so to support you in making the best decision for you,come along to one of our Open Days or Parent’s Evening (seedates on page 3).

Enterprise lounge A new multi-purpose exhibition space hasbeen created to allow students to promoteenterprise ventures within their curriculumareas. The Enterprise Lounge is utilised inmany different ways such as market stalls,performances and an area where studentscan showcase their work.

The College has an excellent learning resource centre,Library+, which provides you with everything you need tohelp you with your studies. Sports FacilitiesIf you like to keep active, you may like to check out our well-equipped sports centre which includes badminton,volleyball, basketball, netball court, a football pitch and tabletennis tables.

A variety of supervised sports activities are run during the weekby the College Sport Maker. The College also has a number ofsports teams that have regular fixtures against other teams, bothregionally and nationally.

Students also have access to the College gym which isoperational before and after the College teaching day at astudent rate. The gym has a range of cardio vascular andresistance equipment to help learners improve and developtheir fitness. In addition there are outdoor facilities for tennis,netball and basketball.

College Sport MakerPeterborough Regional College has recently received a sizeableinvestment from Sport England to be able to offer all students atthe College the opportunity to take part in recreational sportactivities.

In preparation for the 2015/2016 academic year, the CollegeSport Maker is looking to work with a range of collegedepartments to offer activities such as football and touch rugby.However, if there’s a sport you would like to get involved in; in oroutside of college, the College Sport Maker would love to hearabout this.

PRC is a recognised healthy FE College. The College is committed tocontinuous improvement of its health services for staff and learners.The College actively engages its staff and learners in the promotionof health and well-being leading to increased performance andachievement.

Places to EatThere are a variety of eating outlets available at the College tosuit all tastes. PRC Ventures, a learning company formed tosupport our students to experience a commercial environmentmanage a number of outlets:

The Refectory serves a range of breakfast items, hot ‘street food’offers, jacket potatoes, extensive salad bar, Halal and non Halalproducts, sandwiches, dessert pots, fresh fruit and a range of hotand cold beverages.

Costa Coffee Shop serves premium branded coffee and tea,luxury hot chocolate, cold beverages. Breakfast rolls, fresh filleddeli rolls, paninis, freshly made soup and a range of hand heldpasties. Evening ‘one pot meal for evening classes.

The Shop which is by the student entrance is open for hot andcold drinks, confectionery and snacks. There is a deli bar withinthe shop offering a range of deli and flatbread made to order rollsand hot chicken wraps.

The Pantry provides delicious sandwiches, paninis, tray bakes,cakes, scones and excellent range of hot and cold meals,provided by the College’s hospitality and catering learners. ThePantry will also take orders for pre-packed meat and poultrywhich can be collected on your way home. Located in AlexandraFoyer.

Parcs Restaurant is situated in the Hospitality and Cateringdepartment and run by the Hospitality learners. Parcs Restaurantoffers a freshly prepared table d’hôte menu that changes on adaily basis. The restaurant offers both staff and student discounton two course lunches. The restaurant opens on Wednesdayevening serving a carvery and individual speciality dishes. It isalso open on Thursday evenings for themed events throughoutthe academic year.

Travel Counsellors are a financially protected travel agency run by the TravelCounsellors in association with college students and staff.

The College NurseryDid you know that the College has an on-site Nursery available to students andmembers of the public! The Nursery team comprises of a ‘family’ of highly qualified staffwho are here to care for your child or children whilst you study. The Nursery has beenrunning for over 23 years and offers high quality childcare for babies and youngchildren aged 3 months to 5 years. Supporting our studentsPersonal TutorWhen you join the College you will be assigned a personal tutor who is there tosupport you through your time at collegeand to make sure you are getting on wellwith your course. You can meet with yourtutor on a regular basis and they will helpyou develop your study skills and researchcareer and higher education opportunitieswith you.

Additional LearnerSupportThe Learner Support team are committedto helping you progress and successfullyachieve your learning goals. We have ateam of friendly, dedicated and qualifiedCommunication Support Workers, StudentSupport Workers, Personal LearningCoaches and Specialists. We work in partnership with tutors to enable you toreceive support to complete your studiesand realise your potential.

We can assess and support additionallearning needs arising from a learning difficulty and or disability.

PRC has achieved the nationally recognisedNHS You’re Welcome standard which is aboutdelivering age appropriate and responsivehealth information to young people. The criteria to meet the standard includes: acces-sibility; publicity; confidentiality and consent;the environment; staff training, skills, attitudes and values; monitoring and evaluation involving young people andhealth issues for adolescents.

It was reported that the College is a good example of a fully inclusive service which metand exceeded the expectations of a panel ofinspectors.

In addition, the College has the Healthy College recognition for promoting health andwellbeing amongst learners and staff. Wehave also received the Buttle award forlooked after children and care leavers whichdemonstrates the College’s dedication to ensure all students have full access to collegeservices and education, and the BIG award inrecognition of excellence practices in anti- bullying.

College CounsellorThe College wants to ensure all students arefully supported and have the tools they needto help them succeed, and to ensure you arenot distracted from your studies.

Our self-referral, confidential, counsellingservice is available to all students. Relaxation and stress management is also available and there is a range of informationand resources to access. A meeting can bearranged at reception in the Wellbeing Centre.

Safeguarding ChildrenPeterborough Regional College is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all learners, staff and visitors.The College takes its responsibilities very seriously and operates robust policies onhealth and safety and safeguarding to ensurethat all people that use our buildings andservices are kept safe from all forms of harm.The College has appropriate staff to providesupport and guidance on all safeguarding issues. Copies of college policies are availableon request.

We pride ourselves on safety and wellbeing of our students. This was identified in the report with Ofsted saying:

All students are automatically members ofthe Students’ Union when you join collegeand being a member of the Students’Union gives you the opportunity to buythe NUS Extra Card, which is sold by theUnion and entitles students to discounts inshops, cinemas and other outlets.

The Students' Union also organises eventsand activities and promotes clubs and societies for students. The Students’ Unionprovides a voice for students and represents student views to the Collegemanagement team. Elections to the executive committee are held annually anddetails of activities are available from theunion office next to the common roomarea.

Supporting our Students

Youth Work TeamThe Youth Work Team are here to supportour students in a variety of ways. This canrange from fun activities such as cooking,sports arts and music to more serious issuessuch as student needs and sexual health advice all in an informal setting. They arealso involved in many fundraising activitiesand competitions and other recreational activities.

Career CoachTo help you plan your future we havelaunched Career Coach, a free on-line toolthat allows users to explore potential careers. This fantastic tool shows potentialand current students of all ages how coursesand programmes offered at the College willlead to the careers that interest them.

This user-friendly web based tool can be accessed via the College’s website atwww.peterborough.ac.uk and provides valuable real-time information on wages,employment trends and job availability forcareers, as well as the education that willhelp users reach their career goals.

Career Coach takes job hunting and careeropportunities to the next level as it connectsstudents and the unemployed to the available jobs in the area, and for those individuals who are looking to re-train, thefacility can be used to see what courses theywould need to do to achieve their dream career. This new service also includes a built-in CV builder to help students and jobseekers quickly and efficiently put together an updated CV with key skills andwork experience.

Annual Awards CeremonyThe College loves to celebrate the achievement of our students so to make thisextra special we hold an annual awards ceremony to highlight students efforts anddedication over the past academic year. Students are nominated by their tutors andthe winners get to enjoy an evening of finedining and entertainment with their familyand friends.

Financial Information

Under 19If you are under 19 on the 31st August inthe year in which you start your course, livepermanently in the UK or EU and you areapplying for a full-time further educationcourse, you will be exempt from the payment of tuition fees*! There may besome costs for equipment, uniforms, travelcosts to work placements and residentialtrips or visits.

*You may have to pay fees for any additional courses orqualifications you study through the academic year.

Care to Learn fundingfor young parentsIf you are caring for your own child or children and are under 20, the Care to Learnscheme can help you fund childcare whileyou study. If you need more informationplease contact our Information Centre on0345 872 8722 or email [email protected].

Armed ForcesStudents studying their first full Level 3qualification who have left the BritishArmed Forces (within the last 10 years) aftercompleting four or more years of service, orwho have been medically discharged dueto an injury or inactive service, after basictraining, can apply through their educationofficer for the Enhanced Learning Creditsscheme and receive more informationabout funding for their course. Please notethat this does not apply to apprenticeships,and is subject to change throughout the academic year.

Over 19If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August in the year in which you start yourcourse, then you will be required to pay tuition fees for each year of your course unless you qualify for exemption. Pleasespeak to one of our advisers for more information. You may also be required topay other costs associated with yourcourse. Further information about your individual requirements for your course isavailable from the College’s InformationCentre.

The tuition fees that we are required tocharge are determined by the level of government funding for colleges. For2014/2015 the College charged a tuition fee of approximately £1,600 perannum for all full-time courses.

We have not yet received the funding guidance for 2015/16 so at the time ofgoing to print (October 2014) we have notyet published our tuition fee rates. Pleasecontact the College for more informationnearer to the start of your course or checkthe College website at www.peterborough.ac.uk.

24+ Advanced LoansAre you interested in:

Then the new ‘24+ Advanced LearningLoan’ could be just for you!

What are they?

• 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are student loans similar to higher education loans, but for the further education sector.

• Loans will be available for learners aged 24 and over, studying at Level 3 or Level 4

Are you eligible?

Individuals who are: • Aged 24 or over at the start of their course (there is no upper age limit)

• Resident in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for 3 years immediately before this

• Have not previously had a loan to do the same qualification type and level of qualification

What does it mean for me?

You don’t pay anything up front for yourcourse fees and if you are not earning over£21,000, you don’t pay anything back untilyou earn over this amount. If annualearnings fall below £21,000 repayments willstop and only re-start when earningsincrease to more than £21,000.

When can I apply?

You will need to have an interview with amember of college staff for the course thatyou are applying to. At this point details willbe given of how to apply online via StudentFinance England.

Payment by InstalmentsWhen you enrol you are making a commitment to pay your tuition fees in fulleven if you later withdraw from yourcourse. You may pay your tuition fees inthree instalments, the first of which ispayable when you enrol. There is an admincharge for this facility and it is not availablefor all courses.

Fees & FundingIn previous years the Skills Funding Agency subsidised learners who met their criteria.This criteria changes from year to year according to government policy and at thetime of publication the criteria for 2015/16has not been published. We will make thisinformation available as soon as we receive it.

Financial AssistanceWhen applying for a course, considerationshould be given to the costs involved, including:

• The cost of getting to college• Course costs (books and equipment,

exams, trips)

In cases of financial difficulty the Collegeendeavours to provide financial assistancefor equipment, travel etc, to students, subject to the availability of governmentfunding. Up-to-date details will be availablewhen the College receives notification fromthe relevant government funding agenciesin the spring/summer of 2015.

Peterborough Educational Trust

A charitable trust has been set up to enable talented individuals to study at Peterborough Regional College.

The Peterborough Education Trust (PET)launched by Peterborough Regional College awards scholarships of up to £5,000to applicants who have shown that theyhave exceptional skills and the potential tomake a significant contribution in their chosen field of study. The College is one ofthe first in the area to launch this type oftrust. Trustees of the PET have been appointed and will oversee the donationsand scholarships awarded on a pre-definedselection criteria.

Scholarships can be used for any expenses associated with study, including the cost of travelling to and from College. Awards willbe made to students on the basis of vocational or academic excellence; overcoming a disability; re-engaging in education or training; and financial hardship.

Courses & QualificationsBTEC INTRODUCTORY are equivalent totwo GCSEs at grades D-G.

BTEC FIRSTS are equivalent to 4 GCSEs atgrade A–C.

BTEC NATIONALS are equivalent to A-Levels and can help prepare you for employment or university. They are usuallystudied over two years and place more emphasis on coursework than A-Levels.

NVQS AND VRQSThese are performance based qualificationsand are ideal if you intend to work, or already work in a specific industry, serviceor business as they measure what you cando as well as how much you know and understand.

APPRENTICESHIPSApprenticeships allow you to work (usuallyfour days a week) whilst training one day aweek. Apprenticeships at Level 2 take up totwo years to complete and you will work towards a Level 2 qualification and functional skills. Advanced Apprenticeshipstake up to four years and you will completea Level 3 qualification and functional skills.

You will work for an employer who will payyou a reasonable wage while you completeyour training. Apprenticeships are for people aged 16 and over, and there will bean employer contribution for those aged 19and over.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATIONThe Access to Higher Education course is an alternative to GCSEs and BTEC Nationals for mature students aged 19+ who may lackformal academic qualifications, but whowish to enter higher education.

With various options and pathways, it is designed for people who have been awayfrom studying for some years. It will helpyou gain the confidence and skills necessary to return to formal education.There are no specific pre-entry requirements, but all applicants are interviewed. See page 20 for more details.

Progression to AccessIf you do not meet the entry requirementsfor the Level 3 Access courses in Science,Social Sciences, Professional Care or Business and Computing then you may beinterested in our one year Progression toAccess course. On this course you will complete GCSEs in maths, English and Science.

You will also improve your study skills andIT. On successful completion of this courseyou will then be in a position to progress toa Level 3 Access to HE.

GCSESYou may also be able to take GCSE Englishand maths alongside other Level 3 full-timecourses.

The GCSE Plus programme is designed for16-19 year old students who wish to gain arange of GCSE and vocational qualificationsthat form the key requirement for progression to higher level courses including university, alongside boosting future employment prospects or enhancing eligibility for Apprenticeships. Many students will have some prior experience ofGCSE study and will use this course as thespringboard to improve their grades in coresubjects.

At interview you will need to demonstrateyour commitment to the course you are applying for.

In addition to your main course, you canchoose from a whole range of other qualifications and activities including sport,drama and a wide range of part-timecourses (most of which are absolutely free ifyou’re between 16 and 18 years old).

Peterborough Regional College’s YoungPeople’s courses are designed to introduce youto the skills and learning required for specificcareers. You can study these alongside yourother options. Your teachers and advisors atschool will help you to select the best course.You will attend Peterborough Regional Collegeeither for a half or a whole day once a week fortwo years.

TraineeshipsThe Government has recently introduced an exciting new programme calledTraineeships. This programme is designed for those aged 16 to 24 years oldwho are in need of some work experience in order to help them move intopaid employment. Our traineeship programmes offers a wide range ofopportunities for young people to fully prepare themselves for the workplace.

Who is it for?To participate on the course, you must not currently be in education ortraining and you must be looking for work. In addition, if you are aged 16-18years old, you must be qualified to below Level 3 and if you are aged 19-24years old you must be qualified to below Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs atgrades A-C).

What is covered?• Work preparation training. For example CV writing, interview

preparation, job search, self discipline and inter-personal skills• Up to 12 weeks on a work experience placement which will develop

workplace skills and experience• Functional skills in maths and English

Maths and English are an essential part of the Traineeship programme, and are integral to various other types of further qualifications includingApprenticeships.

AttendanceThe course starts with a four week intensive employability preparationalongside English and maths sessions in a classroom setting. After the firstfour weeks you then start your arranged work placement and study at collegeone day a week. The course duration is 16 weeks covering 20 hours per week.

What can this course lead to?You can progress on to other courses offered by the College includingApprenticeships. The programme is also a great step up into full timeemployment.

IntroductionIf you want to earn while you learn, an Apprenticeship could bejust what you’re looking for. Our Apprenticeship team helps over400 people like you into free or subsidised, work-based trainingwith local employers each year and works hard to ensure that youare in the right job with the level of support that you need.

What are Apprenticeships?An Apprenticeship is a job with a development programmedesigned by employers in the relevant sector. This allowsapprentices to gain technical knowledge and real practicalexperience, along with functional and personal skills, required fortheir immediate job and future career. These are achieved througha mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training andthe opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real workcontext. You, your employer and the College will agree anindividual learning plan of what you are going to achieve and how.

What hours will I work?You will be employed full-time (minimum of 30 hours per week).

Earn while you learnAll apprentices must receive the appropriate national minimumwage. Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage rate does notapply to Higher Apprenticeships.

If you are 19 or over when you start your training you will have tobe on an Apprenticeship programme for a year before the nationalminimum wage will be applied and then it will be at a special rate.The Apprenticeship Team at the College can help with this.

What will I need?For some Apprenticeships, and to work with some employers, youwill need specific GCSE passes or previous experience. Access to Higher EducationAccess to Higher Education courses aredesigned for students who would like toprogress in their career, go on to study atdegree level or simply extend theirknowledge after being out of formaleducation for some time.

Who is it for?The Access to Higher Education course isspecifically designed for motivated individuals aged 19 and over who wish toreturn to study.

What will I need?Entry requirements for the access programme you are applying for may differ depending on the area you wish tostudy, please see each individual area. However, formal qualifications may notbe necessary for entry to the course ifyou are able to demonstrate extensiverelevant industry experience.

You will be assessed on your level of numeracy and literacy skills. Studentswishing to progress to University willneed GCSE English and/or maths A-C depending on the access subjects youare studying and the university you areapplying to.

The course is specifically designed withUniversity progression in mind and tutorswill guide you through the HE applicationprocess, in addition to teaching you howto be an effective undergraduate. Most ofthe lecturers on the course also teach atUniversity Centre Peterborough, so weare well-equipped to provide excellentadvice.

ScienceYou will study biology, chemistry, medicalphysics, health and disease, maths for scientists, and a major science project ofyour own choice. You will also be trainedin study skills to make the most of yourtime on the course and at Univeristy. It’s an exciting time for the animal care provision at theCollege as the outside facility is now complete and we havewelcomed lots of new animals into their new homes,including diamond doves, zebra, finches, rabbits, guineapigs, chinchillas and koi carp. We are also currentlydeveloping an indoor facility which will be home torodents and exotic animals once it is complete.

Our Horse Management courses have now been runningfor four years and continues to be a popular choice forequine enthusiasts. The course is vocational and is taughtby qualified British Horse Society instructors and otherexperienced members of staff and practical work is carriedout at the Grasslands Equestrian Centre and other venues.

If you have an interest in the countryside then ourcountryside and horticulture course maybe for you. Thecourse will help you gain valuable experience, hands onpractical skills and in-depth knowledge of working in thecountryside and horticulture. This course will also providepractical experience of working in gardens and nurseries toenable progression to further study or work.

Who is it for?This course is ideal for people aged 16 yearsand above who would like to work in thehorse industry or progress onto a Level 3qualification. This is also a good steppingstone onto careers such as horse grooming,riding, teaching, yard management, studwork, veterinary nursing and land basedretail. There is a riding and non–riding option for this course.

What will I need?You will need 4 GCSEs at D or above or alevel one equivalent qualification. Prior riding skills are not essential and you will begiven the choice of a riding or non–ridingoption. If you pursue the riding option youwill need to be able to ride confidently inwalk, trot and canter and will be asked toparticipate in a riding skills assessment before the course starts. Learners taking thenon–riding option will need to be confidentin handling horses.

Who is it for?This course is for students who are residentin the UK and plan to live and work herepermanently, and who wish to developtheir language skills through anintensive and inclusive English programme.We also receive applications from International students for programmes atEntry Level 3 and above. Open DaysOpen Days are a great way to get a snap shot of what university life is like here at UCP and provide you with all the information you need to help you make the right decision for your future.

On the day, you will be able to look round UCP and speak to academic and admissions staff aboutapplications and courses. We will have various displaysand demonstrations for our courses and current students will also be on hand to tell you about UCP. In addition to our course advice, we will also havefinancial talks, information on our clubs and societies and accommodation available in the city.

Step 1: Take a momentand collect yourthoughts…Make sure the course you are applyingfor is right for you. See the ‘before youapply…’section on this page for morehelp. This step is often the mostimportant when considering any bigdecision, especially a decision about yourfuture. Before you fill out an applicationyou need to find out your predictedgrades from your school. This will helpyou to choose the correct level of coursefor you.

Step 2: How to applyYou have two options for applying for acourse, either fill out the application form atthe back of this brochure, there are sometips to help you fill out this form in thissection. Alternatively, you can now applyfor your chosen course online.

Simply use the course search facility on thewebsite at www.peterborough.ac.uk. Eachcourse will have an apply online button,which will direct you to our onlineapplication form. Once you have filled thisin and submitted, you will receive aconfirmation email from us.

If you are in year 11 at a Cambridgeshireschool (excluding all Peterboroughschools) you will need to apply throughUCAS Progress. You will also need tospeak to your schools careers advisor.They will also be able to help you withthe application process. Once you havesubmitted your application you will beinvited in for a quick interview aboutyour options.

It is important that you apply as early aspossible. There is no problem if you havealready applied to other schools andcolleges. It makes sense to have as manyoptions open to you as possible. Onceyou have sent us your application, we willsend you an acknowledgement letter tolet you know we’ve received it, and youwill also be invited to a welcome event.

Step 3: Come in for a chat – the CollegeWelcome EventThere really is no need to worry, it’s not asscary as it seems! It’s an informal chatbetween you and a college tutor. It is agood opportunity to find out more aboutus and our facilities, as well as helpingyou to decide on the right course.

Our advice is always impartial, and if, forany reason, we think you would benefitfrom a course elsewhere, we will alwaysgive you the details. At the end of thewelcome event and when the rightcourse has been agreed you will receivean offer of a place at the College whichmay be provisional on your exam resultsand/or references etc.

Step 4: Exam resultsand enrolmentOnce you get your exam results inAugust, you will need to inform theCollege of your grades. If for any reason,you do not get the grades you expected,don’t panic! We hold an advice day everyyear following the results and in manycases we can help students to find acourse that is suitable.

Before you applyGet a taste of what you like!What better way to decide what subjectsto study than to come along to a TasterSession, Open Day or general tour? Theseevents are great for checking out thefacilities on offer and you can also get toknow the course tutors and otherstudents before you enrol. This will help you to makesure the course is at the right level foryou. You can reach the College from Queensgate bus station by catching the ‘citi’bus number 5 from bay 12 which takes you to our Eastfield Road entrance. Alternatively you can catch the ‘citi’ bus number 2 from bay 13 which stopson Park Road near our Park Crescent entrance.

Both buses run every 10 minutes during the day (correct at time of print).For further details please call 0345 872 8722.

If you prefer to cycle, drive or car share, there is a secure area for bikes,mopeds and motorbikes and also a large car park at the Eastfield Road entrance for students. All parking is free.
