PRAYER SPOTIt is so easy just to listen to God’s Word in church and Bible Class and not really take it in. It’s also very easy to attend church and Bible Class and not even listen!

Pray for the young people in Back, Tain and Aberdeen. Pray that as they meet today they will hear God’s Word and do what they learn in it.

And pray for yourself, that you might remember what you learn about the Lord and look for ways to live for him.

Show what this story tells us about the power of Jesus

Show how the greatness of God shows up

What can we do about our sinfulness? (1 John 1:9)

Where do we read about our great God?(Acts 1:1-3 - and the ‘former book’

Remember those who are just start-ing secondary school and who are feeling a bit insecure, that they will soon make good friends.

Pray especially for any with learning difficulties who find school a hard challenge.

The Bible is God’s Word and God doesn’t tell lies. That means that all we read in the Bible is true.

PRAYER SPOTOur prayers take us from the north east to the south west this week. Pray for the young people in the communities of Muir of Ord, Golspie and Lochgilphead. Ask the Lord to bless whatever Christian contact they have - perhaps church or Bible Class, or Christian teachers, friends or family. Pray especially for any who have no Christian contact at all.

Do you really believe in Jesus? If you are in doubt about that, pray and ask God to forgive your sins and give you the gift of faith.

PETERHEALING THE LAME MAN

(Acts 3:1-10)

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 4 - LESSON 4

Imagine you are a Sunday School teacher teaching this lesson to a class of 5 to 6 year olds. Illustrate the story as you would do for them, paying great attention to the details in the Bible account of what happened. Use speech bubbles to show what was said.

The lame man beingcarried along.

The man shouting out toPeter and John. Peter stopping and replying.

Peter taking the man’s hand and helping him up to his feet!

The man walking, jumping and praising God.

Peter, John and the healed man going to the temple

together.

Now take turns to tell the story to your class, as you would tell it to a class of 5 to 6 year olds. Explain exactly what’s happening in each picture.

PRAYER SPOTKnock, Killearnan and Edinburgh are in our prayers this week. There are two Free Churches in the centre of Edinburgh, one near the castle and the other a little to the south of that.

Pray for the young people and children who attend these churches, and for those who used to come but have fallen away and become careless.

If you are a Christian, pray that God will give you the courage to be public about your faith. We should never, ever be embarrassed about believing in Jesus.

If you are not yet a Christian, perhaps today is the day when you should pray about that.

PRAYER SPOTPray for the young people in Lairg, Nairn and Falkirk. Pray especially for churches where no young people attend, asking the Lord to open the way for them to hear about the Lord Jesus.

Pray especially for those who think that Christianity makes no differ-ence to how we live, that they might discover that the opposite is true!

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 4 - LESSON 7 TIME TO TALK

That’s not my problem. My problem is that I’m scared to become a Christian in case I do what Peter did and deny Jesus. I think it would be better never to be a Christian at all rather than to do that.

But the thing that worries meabout that is what will happen when I die if I’m not a Christian. And it’s not only that. The truth is that I’d really like to be a Christian but the story of Peter just scares me stiff.

That story about Jesus telling Peter and the other guys that they would fish for men really worries me. What right does anyone have to try to persuade anyone else what to believe. I think that’s an incredibly arrogant thing to do.

I think it’s maybe OK to tell other people what you believe, but the idea of fishing around trying to catch people and make them Christians is awful!

The story about Peter’s release from prison really speaks to me, especially the bit about Rhodaleaving him outside because she didn’t believe it was him, even though there was a prayer meeting praying for his release.

I do pray, but I don’t know if Ireally, truly expect God to answermy prayers. I’m a bit like Rhoda.

Kirkcaldy

Stornoway Lybster

PRAYER SPOTStornoway is the biggest Free Church of Scotland and many young people attend there. Pray that they will feel special and not be lost in the crowd. Pray for the young folk in Lybster and Kirkcaldy too. Ask the Lord to show them all that they are special, made in God’s image and different from all of the rest of creation.

It’s right and healthy to ask hard questions. Your Bible Class leader is always willing to try to answer them, or to find out the answers for you.

Does God really hear and answer prayers or does he just give us what is good for us anyway?

If Peter was truly forgiven after what he did, can I be certain sure that I can be forgiven for my sins? I hope I’d never do anything as bad as he did.

If I do become a Christian, does that mean that I can’t take part in other things? I get the impression that church people don’t approve of things like football and trendy music.

Are those who preach the gospel to people who haven’t come to church to hear it actually infringing their human rights? I mean people preaching in the open air and things like that.

There are many needy young people in Scotland today. Pray that the Lord might open ways for them to hear the good news that Jesus loves them.

THE HOLINESS OF GOD

God spoke to Isaiah in a vision in which he saw God seated on a throne.

In lesson 8 you discovered that God is Sovereign. He is the king who reigns over all things. He reigns from his throne in heaven. Earthly thrones are sometimes very grand. We can’t begin to imagine what God’s heavenly throne is like.

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Callanish and Greenock, both the congregations and the communities.

Remember any young people who are under pressure with work at school or at home, especially any who have to care for a disabled parent, brother or sister.

Jesus left the glories of heaven so that his people might go there to be with him forever.

Isaiah could do nothing to make himself clean. Instead, one of the seraphs dealt with his sin.

Can we do anything to take away our sins?

Crack the code to show how God deals with our sins and what he expects of us when he does.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 4 - LESSON 12

ONE GOD

Copy Deuteronomy 6:4.

This verse was given by God to his Old Testament chosen people, the Jews. In Judaism, the verse is called the

SHEMAThe verse is also hugely important to Christians. In it, God himself tells his people that there is only ONE God.

Read Deuteronomy 6:5 to see the next important teaching God gives to his people.

The idea of God being three persons and yet one God is really hard to understand. Here’s an illustration that might help.

Look at the picture. How many coins are there?

How many sides does the coin have and what are they?

Does the fact that the coin has three sides make it more than one coin?

Now look at a real coin? The three sides of the coin have different functions.

What does the top show people?

What does the bottom show?

And the rim around the coin makes it thick enough to protect it and save it from bending.

Do the different functions of the three sides of your coin make it three different coins or does it remain just one?

God is three distinct persons, the Father, the Son (that’s Jesus) and the Holy Spirit, but the three persons are one God, and each person has his own function.

GOD IN THREE PERSONS

Although the Bible doesn’t actually use the word ‘Trinity’ to describe God, it clearly teaches that God is in three persons.

Who are they? (Matthew 28:19)

What do you know about God the Father? (John 3:16)

What do you know about God the Son (Jesus)? (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)

What do you know about God the Holy Spirit? (John 14:26)

THE TRINITY

(Matthew 28:19-20)

Pray that God will especially bless those who have no contact with the gospel. Pray that people will reach out to them with the good news that the Lord Jesus Christ is Saviour.

If you feel confused about the idea of there being one God in three Persons, remember the coin idea.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 4 - LESSON 13THE DOCTRINE OF GOD

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER?

You’ve spent the last five weeks exploring what the Bible teaches about God. Now here’s your opportunity to show what you remember. You could do this as a class, taking turns to fill up the worksheet.

Whatever you remember about God, keep this in mind - God is too wonderful, too holy, too glorious for our minds to take in. So, whatever you have learned about God, it is only a tiny bit of what we’ll learn about him in heaven!

Write three points in the top four boxes and then one sentence about God being three persons in one Godhead.

PRAYER SPOTThe Free Church has congrega-tions in all sorts of communities, island and mainland villages as well as Scotland’s new towns. But people are the same wherever they are, and they need our prayers. Pray for the young people in Barvas and Dornoch, that they will trust in Jesus Christ and be among all those who will be saved.

Pray that the good news that Jesus is the Saviour of all who trust in him, will change your heart, change your life, and change your future.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 4 - LESSON 14 TIME TO TALK

We’ve had five weeks learning about Godfrom what it says in the Bible. But that’s justbecause I was born in the UK. If I’d beenborn in Iran, I’d be learning about Allah. IfI’d been born in India, I’d believe in all theHindu gods. What’s to say that the Bible is true and other holy books are not.

And another thing, if God is as great as the Bible makes him out to be, I just think that he wouldn’t be interested in ordinary human beings.

The thing that bothers me is about God being so holy. I really dowant to go to heaven when I die, but I think that being in the presenceof such a holy God would make me feel really uncomfortable. It would make me feel how bad I’d been all my life ... even though I try to be good. It’s so confusing!

I can certainly understand how Isaiah felt when he saw his vision of God. But I’m not sure how the angel’s coals of fire were meant to help.

I think it’s amazing what we’ve learned about God and there’s so much more still to learn. Someone told me that if I learned a new fact about God every single day, and if I lived to be 100, I’d still have loads to learn about him in heaven. That’s quite a thought!

The only thing is that I’m not quitesure how to start my 100 yearlesson!

Page 28: PETER PETER’S CALLING (Luke 5:1-11) - Free Church of ... YEAR 4 BIBLE CLAS… · PETER PETER’S CALLING (Luke 5:1-11) ... A cock _ _ _ _ _ _ ... Bible quiz answers in the wordsearch

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Rogart, Lennoxtown and Harris.

The local newspapers in Rogart, Lennoxtown and Harris are no doubt full of the usual bad news. Pray that they will also share good news. And the best of all good news is that Jesus Christ is risen!

Living for the Lord is challenging, sometimes difficult and always r e w a r d i n g . I f y o u a r e s t i l l wondering about becoming a Christian, think hard. There is no better life than the Christian life.

Lennoxtown

Rogart

I’m still trying to get my head round the idea of God being three Persons and still one God. It’s not easy to under-stand.

The idea of holiness is some-thing I can’t take in. What does ‘holy’ really mean. And another word that really confuses me is ‘glory’. What is glory?

One lesson was about God being omnipresent - every-where all of the time. If God is everywhere, why doesn’t he stop bad things happening when he sees they’re going to happen?

What amazes me about God is that he’s so amazing but he’s still interested in us. My brain just about bursts when I think that God sent the Lord Jesus to die for me.

At the end of their three year training for the king’s service, Nebuchadnezzar no doubt hoped that he would have turned them into faithful (and well fed!) servants with Babylonian names, who thought of themselves as Babylonians rather than Hebrews. After all, they would by then speak the language and have read all the books they’d been given to study about Babylon.

Nebuchadnezzar’s policy has been tried throughout history by cruel and powerful leaders. It’s called brain-washing.

Daniel then went to King Nebuchadnezzar and told him what he had dreamed and what his dream meant. But first, he explained how he knew these things. What did he tell the king? (v 27-28)

God used Daniel to show the king what was going to happen in the future. World powers would follow each other but none of them would last.

There is a kingdom that will last forever ruled over by King Jesus himself!

Christmas present ideasIt can be really hard to find presents that we can afford and that our family and friends will like. What about having a token Christmas this year?

Make a list of those to whom you want to give a gift and decide things that you could do for them. Then write each one a card explaining that it is a gift token and that you will do what you suggest on it as their present. For example, you could wash the car for Mum, go a walk with Dad to one of his favourite places, spend an hour one afternoon wiping the shelves in Gran’s cupboards, or play a board game with your brother or sister every Friday night in January. I think you’d be surprised how delighted people would be with their presents.

Jot down some ideas for gift-tokens.

Perhaps this is a good time to do some serious thinking about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sadly, much of the thinking about him at this time of year is just sentimental.

2 If you do, then you accept you are a sinner who needs forgiveness.

3 Have you confessed your sin and asked God to forgive you?

4 Have you asked the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Saviour?

5 If not, please think about asking him today. That is one decision that you will never, ever regret.
