ACTIVITY WorkshopSome initial observations from today

14-May-2013

Peter Mooney

Thank you all very much for a very active participation in the workshop

All presentations + these notes from today will be made available open access via the workshop website.

Excellent participation - everyone either asked a question, answered one, or gave a presentation (or all three)!

VGI Participation - In numbers...

[Jokar] The urban fabric of OSM Heidelberg will be contributed by 2013 - campus contributions dominate[Steinmann] - 3% of users active on more than 100 days. Highways >90% in '05 … about 36% in '12: Building ~5% in '08 to ~35% in '12[Schmidt] OSM Survey: Male 97%, Female 3% in OSM - different working/life contexts give different percentage of participation - different barriers for participation[McKenzie] 91% of posts within 24 hrs of activity

The users - their ACTIVITY

[Kalantari] - give users more pro-active opportunities for engagement in VGI creation[McKenzie] - passive participation via social networking - posts to a user's social wall[Davidovic] - emphasis on delivering "popular VGI data" to users to support their activities - but there are some data types with "little interest" - introduce GAMIFICATION (close to McKenzie)[Rehrl] - Motivation - what are the key motivations for uses to use the data - or collect the data?

Quality

[Barron] - an intrinsic approach - provide an overview report on quality in an area - let the user's decide based on their use-cases. [Ramos] - something like semantic heterogeneity must be investigated over time and space (not just a local place in time)[Kessler] - Two proposals (1) combine existing datasets or (2) crowdsource the crowdsourced data.

Remarks from the Open Floor

Research Topics from the Community

Shift from static to dynamic: Connect more with the citizen as sensors - citizens using their social networks, their smartphones which have sensors [Google traffic sensor example]Better understanding of users + user context: The "prod-user" - but also communities only consuming the data - could they 'contribute'?"Us and them" - there needs to be a shared approach - the VGI comm, the NMAs, the users, EU approaches such as INSPIRE

Research Topics (2)

Strike the balance between data collection through traditional approaches (INSPIRE driven, NMA) against ‘disruptive technologies’. Will there be a convergence in 5, 10, 15 years?

"The Citizen Sensor"

"In the future the subtlety of data contributed passively by sensors will be much richer than we can probably imagine now"

"Incentivise the active participant to continue participating whilst ensuring that the passive participant will also continue to collect information passively"

Are we doing the wrong thing? The world is "fuzzy" :-)

Should we accept uncertainty? This would be a radical change in direction? Probably not comfortable for the users nor for the scientists!

How can you tell users what a dataset (OSM, GMM,etc) is fit for? In a way that they can understand? Do we really understand the problems users are trying to solve? [VGI may not be so different to other forms of GI]

In ten years time.....

Will OSM still be alive? (yes - maybe in different form(s))

How can we help people share information? To maintain communities + community spirit

The future is not just passive tracking - there will always be physical contribution required.

Our current DB sytems won't be adequate?

Some ideas ...

No OSM! - Could we have a VGI workshop without OSM?Innovation - Where is the innovation? Is the "typical" OSM/VGI contributor doing the same thing that similar people did 100 years ago?Spread our wings - are we looking for patterns, trends etc in a far "too computational" way - more collaboration with social science perhaps? No empty spaces? - has OSM reached maturity where this has become a barrier...Use-cases - inherently linked with quality - do we understand the problems well enough?

Another workshop? With GIScience 2014 in Vienna? Expressions of interest from you

Enjoy the rest of AGILE 2013 and the city of Leuven
