INTRODUCTION<IiIl. •••••••

In the year 58 B.C., Julius Caesar' conquered the ,Helvetians and their allies, a-mongwhom'werethe Celtic Boii of Cisalpine Gaul.' ~heseBoii (see Section 28, Beok I,Caesar,'s Commentaries) had won the admiration of the great conqueror. and he allowedthem i:x:l settle in the land of the Aedui, other all iesof the Helvetians. "They latermigrated to Bohemia, to which and to Bavaria they gave their namelt (See page 166" Vel.IX, The Ceritury Dictionary and Cyc16pedia). ltThe Bavarians take their namefrom the'Boii, a Celtic tribe who inhabited the distI'ic"t;s, which, Y'lhenconquered by the Romans, became the Romanprovinces of Vinde11cie. and Noricum. After the fall of the WesternEinpire this terri tory was overrun by various G~r~ic tribes who formed themselvesinto a confederation like that of the F!'anks and Marcommanniand called themselvesBoiarii.' The confederacy o'frthe Boiarii was.made:-tr~butary first to the Ostrogothsand then to the Franks 0 Finally the sovereignty over them was assumedby Charlemagne, and on the death of that: niona.rch~,thE)kings qf t~e Franks and Germansgoverned it bytheir lieutenants, whobore the title of margrave,. afterward converted into that of aduke, and latterly (1623) into that of elector.u (See llBavaria,lt Vol. II, The Ameri.••cana) • " . . ' . .

The descendants of these Boiares have become intimately'identified with the landand history of Germany, France, England,. etc. In Au~tria the name is spelled Boiar;in Germanyit is Bayer, Baier, Beyer, Beier, Dyer, eic.; in_France it is most oftenBoyer; in England Bowyer. It is interesting to note that Normandyfurnished Williamthe Conqueror a number of Boyer soldiers for ~h~ battle of Hastings (1066), and thatthose who thus became a part of England became distinguished enough to furnish a doz-en or more coats of arms. Religious persecution beginning in the i6th Century underthe Bourbons and ending in wholesale emigration caused manyFrench Huguenots to fleeto Holland, Switzerland, England, etc. Thus it came about that someBoyers were Lnthe army of WilliaJJl of Orange in the battle of Boyne (1690) in Ireland. Those whosettled in Ire'land- and perhaps ,Scotland - spe11 "tihenamewith an IIs", namely Boyers, and are generally Presbyterian. "The ,Boyers have a, large place in the history ofFrance. "Several branches belong to the nobility. Manyhave been distinguished asministers~ soldiers s physicians, statesmen, etc. A notable example was the late Car-dinal Jean Pierre Boyer (1829-1896), Archbishop of Bourges0 Prince Lucien Bonaparte#brother of the great Napoleon, incurred the latter's displeasure by marrying a beau-tiful girl namedBoyer. Many,of. this nam~.were Huguenots.11 (See Stapletonl s Memor-ials of the Huguenots in America" page 54y•. The Boyer historian has examined manycity directories in Germany,;Fra~ce, ,England and ot~er European countries, ,and findsmanyBoyers in all the important walks of lif~.

The Boyers begaJi to ,com~to America as early as 1648. In that year AlexanderBoyer, a Huguenot; was Deputy Commissaryof the 'Colony. Hewas a man of great prom-inence (See Stapletonfs Memorials). For half a century very few came. The Revocationof the Edic'l; of-Nantes (1685) by Louis XIV, j.t is estimated, caused 500,000 Hugunotsto leave France, manyof them coming throu.gh Holland and England to different partsof Alnerica. Someof t11emsettled aG Rio de Janeiro.s Brazil; some at Port Royal, NCJvaScotia; someat Charleston:, S'. C.; some in' Virginia, where indeed we find a few Eng-lish Bowy-erssoon after John Smith's arr ivaI; SQtnein Boston, Mass.; some in RhodeIsland, and elsewhere; and many in Pennsylvania.' Those who-cameto Pennsylvania'vieremostly from Palatinate Bavaria, on the river P~ine. (See Vol. 17, Second Series~Pennsylvania Archives, for the ship lists, .and Dr. Stapleton's Memorials, for natura-lized Boyers in the different counties of Pennsylvania). These Pennsylvania Boyers,as we learn from Rupp's Histories, were closely related. They have identified them-selves with every, sta~ in trw Union. Large number live in Cana.da.,. -, '- . .

The Pala.tinates who settled in Amerioa spoke Germanvery like the Germansof Nur-emberg. Bavaria, today J but with large admixtures of the Dutch l8.nguage of Holland. This unique fqrm of speeoh has becomeknown'as "Pennsylvania Dutch" probably becauseit was in Pennsylvania that so large a majority of these Palatinates settled. Thefact that the Pennsylvania. Boyers soon very generally gave up the Germanic'spellingof their name, for the French, spell~~hows the fyeling with which, in spite of thereligious and political evils w11iohha~ exiled them to America, th~ still 'felt the'Frenohblood in their veins. The influence of the German Reformatinn ~n the Palatinates is seen in the factthat nearly all' of the Pennsylvania Boyers were Lutherans. Some of them were Menno-nites, Baptists, etc. The Huguenot immigrants generally allied th6ffiselves with theReformed Church; the ~lish Bowyers of the Southern states, with the Church of Eng-land and the 1'1ethodists, while those who settled in Canada and the far West or thefar South commonly held to the Catholic Church.

The number of Boyers, who served the cause of American independence from Englandis astonishing, as the Pennsylvania ArchiVes and Colonial records show.

All of the above INTRODUCTIONis included in the Introduction of the vol-ume, IlAHERICANBOYERSIIby the late REW.Charles C. Boyer, Ph.D., and re-vised by Melville James Boyer, M. A., and published under the Auspices ofThe Association of American Boyers, Inc. 1940.Mr. ]lebrilleJames Boyer is noted in the "American Boyerslt as Head of theSocial Studies Department, Allentown High School, Allentown, Pa.

PREFACE

The experience of these several years of gathering information for the publioa-tion of the Peter Boyer Family History has becme increasingly interesting and chall-enging to this author.

What a lot of living the creative powers of God has produced through the Familyof Peter Boyer and his descendants.

Notes on the Peter Boyer Family History were first made by the author some thirtyyears ago, based on conversations with his grandfather, the late John Albert Boyer. From letters of John Albert Boyer it is knovVllthat he also was interested in gather-ing iilformat ion on the Peter Boyer Family 0

We are indebted to many people for furnishing the information at hand. Thisfirst edition is assembled with some misgivings, because of the omissions of manynames, and because' of the errors that must here exist.

The Board of Directors of the Peter Boyer Family anticipates a stirring of thatkind of interest among descendants which will prompt many to provide the additionalinformation needed from the past, and to continue to provide the information neededto keep the History up to date. This suggests that in due time there ought to be anew edition of the Peter Boyer Family History printed.
