PERTON GARDENING CLUB AUGUST IN THE GARDEN

Tall dahlias and chrysanthemums should be staked and the stems should be tied in. For larger flowers remove the side flower buds and weak side stems. Dead head flowers to encourage blooms and pick sweet peas to ensure continuity of flowers.

Weed regularly and mulch and water as necessary. If you are going away water plants thoroughly before leaving and add an additional layer of mulching materials.

Harvest all fruit and vegetables as they mature. Lift onions and shallots, use immediately any that are soft, but ripen others in a sunny position for storage and later use.

Plant winter vegetables such as brussels sprouts, cabbage and purple sprouting broccoli in their final positions. firm in well and water thoroughly.

Pinch our tips of outdoor tomato plants to encourage fruits to ripen. Continue to trim and prune hedges and lightly trim lavender bushes.

Prune climbing and rambling roses that have finished flowering and give all roses a dressing of potash to help ripen the stems. Take half ripe cuttings of heathers, buddleia, berberis, cotoneaster, lavender and santolina, keep them well watered.

At the end of the month make the first plantings of narcissus and daffodil bulbs.

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

The Best Pre-shot Routine for EVERY Golf Shot......1. Analysis: The Thinking Phase - Q: Where is the most ideal spot for this ball to land? A: Determine

the good miss and make your shot selection. Once you have decided on your target, find a spot on the horizon in line with it (e.g. tree branch, spot where a tree meets the sky etc). Be very decisive and Zone in on a very small target. Other factors like wind and lie will come into your decision making and club selection.2. Visualization - Q: How is this shot going to look? A: Visualize the whole shot in your head: the shape, trajectory and even how it will behave on landing. 3. Feel & Trust - Q: What does the swing feel like that will produce that particular shot? A: Practice swings are not to simply loosen up or practice a swing drill, it’s about rehearsing the shot in your mind. This increases our commitment to it and will also take our mind from anything technical. Actually imagine the ball coming off the club face and flying to the target. This is especially important with the shorter shots where feel and speed are required. Try to make the number of practice swings the same every time.4. Align - Alignment is a cause of poor shots and swing problems even for the best players in the world. It is key that we get something in our routine and make this meticulous. Several things may work for you but my preference is for a spot 6 inches in front of the ball and then aligning the club-face to that.5. Clear Away Tension and Centre Yourself - This is the time for the sub-conscious mind to take over. The logical/analytical mind has done its job. We are as prepared as we can be. The thinking phase is over and your now in play mode. Take a few deep (full) breath in through your nostrils and slowly exhale through your mouth or nostrils. This will ease the tension in your body and allow you to feel your centre (abdomen) and improve your balance.6. Reaction - How we choose to react plays a big part in how we perform. If you are unhappy with it we are going to respond with something like “that’s interesting” and quickly move your mind onto something else . Either way, good or bad, we are going to be clearing the mind very shortly after the shot and enjoying everything else the game has to offer

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

“ I might be going mad, but I’m sure I heard a TV advert the other day playing a Christmas song! I didn’t actually see it as I was doing something important - the ironing(!), but I think it was advertising a store’s summer clothes

collection and the only reason I noticed it at all was because the backing track was “Happy Holiday”... as I said, I might be going mad, the amazing weather getting to me!But, it made me think about Christmas! Once the summer solstice passes and the days shorten, despite the gorgeous weather, we hear someone announcing the number of days ‘til Christmas - quite depressing! But hearing that song in July made me think that of course it is the holiday season for many, and that Christmas could, in fact, be celebrated any time, because we don’t actually know the exact date when Jesus was born. It’s very unlikely it was in December, and much more likely to have been in the summer. When we celebrate Jesus’ birth doesn’t really matter, and I love celebrating Christmas in December, but some things do matter. Christianity is not about being holier than thou, it’s about searching for the truth, the truth about God and his love for us. If you’re interested in this quest for the truth, please do get in touch.

In the meantime, I hope you all have a Happy Holiday, whatever you’re doing; and, I might as well be early... Happy Christmas! Rev Julia Cody

A Word From Your MPThe cost of transport is often one of the biggest burdens on the family purse and the expense of taking the children to and from school can seriously eat into an already tight budget. For many families, it is an expense that cannot be met – even assuming that there is a parent or vehicle available to make the journey. It is for this reason that many parents in South Staffordshire rely on the free home to school transport provided by the local council. It was, therefore, with great perturbation that I learnt of proposals to make it mandatory for parents to pay a contribution towards their children’s home to school transport, if their children were not attending the nearest school within their catchment area. The new plans would have seen some parents pay up to £380 extra per child, per year, an impossible amount for many families in the area who are already making sacrifices due to a shrinking real income. This proposal would also have had a number of residents fearing that they would either have to pay hundreds of pounds extra a year for home to school transport or be forced to move their children to be educated in another county, as in several instances the closest school was outside the Staffordshire boundary.

I therefore met with the local authority to voice my concerns, sent a Freedom of Information request demanding to know the cost of such a policy and contacted thousands of residents, urging them to make their voices heard in the matter during the consultation process. I am delighted to reveal that, after receiving a high volume of complaints over the proposal from parents and teachers, Staffordshire County Council has now decided to end the consultation with immediate effect and Ben Adams, the Cabinet Member for Learning and Skills, has recommended that it does not pursue these proposals.

I wanted to say thank you to the many hundreds of people who have been in contact with me, supporting my campaign to see the proposed changes on home to school transport rejected. Many people had said to me that this consultation was just paying lip service and there was no genuine effort to take on board the matters raised, but I am pleased to see that the County Council has listened and acted to remove any uncertainty for pupils and parent in announcing that these changes are not to go ahead.

Parliament is no longer sitting as, this week, the summer recess officially begins. Over the next six weeks - contrary to the news reports that you will read - I will instead be making a series of journeys within the constituency, where I will be visiting everything from local businesses to community groups. I may even have the opportunity to drive a tractor while helping out on a local farm! I hope that I will get to see some of you on my travels around South Staffordshire or at my new constituency office in Codsall (Jubilee House, 59 Wolverhampton Road, Codsall, WV8 1PL) To contact me call 01902 846616.

Wild About Perton in AugustFor many of us grass is a problem. Forever to be kept short by regular mowing, sometimes in the dead of night to avoid an untidy lawn for all to see the next day. But why do we not appreciate grass in the same way we do other plants in our gardens and in our public open spaces. We lovingly care for flowering plants in our gardens: cutting the blossoms to display in our homes. We can spend many hours nurturing tomato plants to protect them from bugs and then are so pleased to tell visitors that the green beans or rhubarb we serve up at dinner are our own produce. Grass is a diverse mix of many different plants. But it is children who most often spot the differences between them; sucking Sweet Vernal Grass for the sweetness in the stems or pulling off the flowers and seed heads of Meadow Grass or throwing the sticky darts of Wall Barley at each other or pressing two flat grass blades together to produce a whistle. Adults rarely observe that fully grown grass is not universally green but a real mixture of shades and colours, particularly so if there are wild flowers growing amongst the grass stems.

On a walk through the centre of Perton there are large areas of cut grass for those who enjoy outdoor games and a place to walk the dog as well as areas with a wide range of fully grown meadow grasses, including during high summer many wild flowers such as red clover, yellow buttercup and wild carrot with its white umbrella like flowers, because the grass is left to grow there are also Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper & Ringlet butterflies and Burnet Moths. Not untidy but rich quality green spaces.

Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday each month starting from Perton Library at 2.00 PM.
