Historic day in Perth as OPP offi cially welcomed to townBy TIFFANY LEPACK [email protected]

EMC News - It was both an important and historic day for members of the Perth Police Service on April 6 as they offi cially transitioned to become members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Thirteen offi cers and one civilian took the oaths of offi ce and secrecy while holding a Bible in their right hands, in front of their superiors, family and many dignitaries.

They wore new OPP uniforms, received new warrant cards, badges and identifi cation cards but it was stressed the community of Perth will continue to have the same strong police service to which they are accustomed.

Perth Mayor John Fenik admitted to the large crowd who had gathered at the Algonquin College Perth Campus that he

was not sure what to say on this historic day that no one would want to hear him speak on the process to change from municipal police service to OPP as that would take eight hours, so he decided to speak on what he knew well: community.

He described those who founded Perth as strong, courageous, dedicated compassionate people who forged out of wilderness. Those same characteristics are still present in the offi cers who will continue to serve the community.

Its not about the superfi cial things that surround us, the colour of the uniform or the design of it the bottom line is not about what is outside but the value system within. People will soon forget the superfi cial aspects of an individual. What they will remember is how a person carried themselves and the actions they took, said Fenik. The OPP have always

been part of our community and always will be part of our community. I welcome these offi cers on this truly historic day.

OPP commissioner Chris Lewis called it a special day and he was proud to be present to welcome the new OPP offi cers.

The Perth Police Service has been a highly respected professional police agency and provided the citizens here with exceptional service, said Lewis. However, these dedicated members will now wear the uniform of the OPP. Please know that you have my personal commitment that the OPP will live up to the standards that the people in this community have come to expect and deserve as we move forward together in partnership.

Lewis emphasized they will not let the community down and that the OPP is committed to providing effective,

professional, police services to the people of Perth.

Perth was a strong community when it was policed by the police service and it will be equally strong when policed by the OPP, said Lewis. As I say all the time: same people, different uniforms, just part of a different organization.

The former Perth Police offi cers completed their OPP training in Orillia from March 25 up until the ceremony and have been partnered with the OPP offi cers to patrol the town as part of the now completed transition.

As of April 5, the Perth Police station was closed and all administrative calls to police should be directed to the OPP at 613-267-2626. In case of an emergency people should call 911. The OPP detachment is located at 75 Dufferin St. in Perth just off Highway 7.

The newest members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Perth Detachment, pose with their superiors after the offi cial swearing-in ceremony on April 6 at Algonquin College, Perth Campus. Front row: Sgt. Richard Crowe, Chief Superintendent Gary Couture, Deputy Larry Beechey, Commissioner Chris Lewis, Deputy Commissioner Vince Hawkes, Lanark County Detachment

Commander, Inspector Gerry Salisbury and Tania Ireton, detachment ad-ministration clerk. Back row: Sgt. Marc Massie, Provincial Constables Dan Truelove, Meghan Hendershott, Jeff Copp, Craig Campbell, Corey Noo-nan, Stephen McElravy, Chris Gilbertson, Derick Dodd, Jessica Faris, Hal Hughes and Greg Cox.

April 20 murder mystery to benefi t Alzheimer Society, Perth Civitan Club

EMC Events Dinner wont be the only thing on the menu, but murder as well during a fundraiser to benefi t the Alzheimer Society of Lanark County and Perth Civitan Club Saturday, April 20.

The two organizations are hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner Show & Dance at the Perth Civitan, featuring Eddie May Mysteries of Ottawa, which bills itself as Canadas longest running pro-ducer of murder mystery entertainment, having been offering dinner theatre for more than 25 years.

This evenings theme surrounds Murder at Tromp Enterprise, (a spin-off of The Apprentice reality show) and audience members will be encour-aged to help solve who did in one of The Donalds entourage.

Its a very interactive show and the cast comes out into the middle of the room and interacts with the audience, said Bobbi-Jo Jarvis, in charge of fund development at the Alzheimer Society. Everyone will have the chance to take notes and fi gure out who did it.

Doors open at 6 p.m. where guests can sip cocktails and peruse the many silent auction items up for grabs. The show gets underway at 7 p.m., followed by dinner, catered by the Perth Civitan, at 7:30 p.m.

According to Jarvis, this is the sec-ond year the organization has offered the murder mystery event but have part-nered with the Perth Civitan to make it bigger and better.

Were hoping to turn it into a ma-jor fundraiser for us, she noted, add-ing that Andress Independent Grocer of Smiths Falls is also a major sponsor for the evening.

Once the audience has solved the mystery, the entertainment doesnt stop there. Jarvis said guests can dance the night away until midnight with DJ Kevin Carnrite. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be split between the two organizations.

Our (Alzheimer Societys) portion will go to our programs and services, to help with our daily programs, educa-tion, workshops for speakers and sup-port groups, she explained.

The Lanark County branch of the Alzheimer Society (one of fi ve in the South East Local Health Integration Network) exists to provide education, support and advocacy to those and their

families dealing with Alzheimers dis-ease and related dementias. Its values are centered around collaboration, ac-countability, respect and excellence, all while also fundraising to help seek a cure.

Our mission is to alleviate the per-sonal and social consequences of Al-zheimers disease and related demen-tias and to promote research, states the organizations website (www.alzheim-ersocietyofl anark.ca).

Tickets are $40 each or those inter-ested can purchase a table of eight for $300. Jarvis urges people to grab theirs quickly as there are only a limited num-ber available. Reserve them in advance by calling the Alzheimer Society of La-nark County at 613-264-0307 or Tick-ets Please at 613-485-6434. They can also be purchased at Ground Waves (17 Wilson St. East in Perth) or by visit-ing the Perth Civitans website (www.perthcivitan.org).

Its an affordable night out, you will be supporting two great causes in the community and the money stays local, Jarvis concluded.

    Be careful on area waterways

EMC News Warmer tempera-tures and the potential for some sig-nifi cant precipitation are being fore-cast for this week. Should this occur, fl ows may increase quickly in some of the larger rivers such as the Clyde, Indian and Fall Rivers within the Mississippi Valley watershed. Flows within the Carp River watershed have been declining quickly but will increase again should the forecasted rainfall occur.

No signifi cant fl ooding is antici-pated at this time, however, we en-courage residents to continue to warn their children about the dangers of playing on or near ice covered sur-faces or fast fl owing water in ditches and smaller creeks.

Ice conditions on area waterways will continue to deteriorate rapidly with the warmer weather and area residents are advised that no one should be venturing out onto ice cov-ered waterways.

Daily water levels and fl ows are available on the MVC website at www.mvc.on.ca.

REGIONAL NEWS Connected to your community

Start of MLB season sparks many good memoriesEMC Lifestyle I was thrilled to see

the start of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season last week, something that for me is a sure sign the long winter is fi nally behind us.

For Canadian baseball fans the 2013 campaign holds real promise. For the fi rst time in many years Toronto Blue Jays are expected to be a contender in the American League (AL) East Divi-sion. Jays captured back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993 but have not appeared in the post season since.

With the full backing of team man-agement, Jays young general manager Alex Anthopoulos (he wasnt even born when Toronto played their fi rst ever game on April 7, 1977) skillfully rebuilt the team during the off-season. In par-ticular Anthopoulos bolstered the ball clubs sagging pitching staff.

Its a long season (162 games) but on the surface it appears Canadas only MLB entry could be in the mix when the stretch run begins late this summer.

The best news for Blue Jays brass is that fan interest in Canadas largest city has skyrocketed in the wake of a signifi cant rebuild. Tickets for the sea-son opener against Cleveland Indians April 2 were quickly snapped up. Scalp-ers were getting previously unheard of prices for opening day seats.

After a big build-up and an impres-sive pre-game ceremony, Jays promptly went out and lost 4-1 to the Indians who are now managed by former Montreal Expos player Terry Francona. Jays slow start continued against Boston Red Sox this past weekend.

Not to worry! As I said, its a long season. What matters is what the clubs record is in September, not in April.

As I have noted previously in this space I am a Detroit Tigers fan. Thats mainly because my wife Kathleen and I both have family in Michigan and also because Kathy and my mother Molly are natives of Chatham, Ontario which is just 50 minutes up the 401 from Windsor-Detroit.

Tigers won the AL pennant and went to the World Series for the second time in six years last fall but were swept by National League (NL) champion San Francisco Giants.

With pitching ace Justin Verlander signed to a massive, new seven year contract and third baseman Miguel Cabrera leading the offence, Detroit is expected to contend once again. For his part Cabrera captured the fi rst MLB Triple Crown (combining batting aver-age, home runs and runs batted in) in 45 years last season. Boston great Carl Yastrzemski was the previous winner way back in 1967, Canadas Centennial Year.

Cabrera, by the way, uses maple bats produced by Canadian bat manufacturer Sam Bat which is located in Carleton Place, where we live. So theres an in-teresting piece of local baseball trivia for you!

Trivia tickerSpeaking of trivia, my family and

friends will tell you that I am something of a trivia nut. Thats especially true relative to sports such as baseball which I follow closely.

At this time of year my personal MLB trivia ticker is going full blast. I have been fortunate enough to attend literally hundreds of Major League and Triple A baseball games over the years, mainly in Montreal, Detroit and in Ottawa when the Lynx were part of the International League from 1993-2007. Lynx were the Expos main farm team for most of their

all too short existence. This isnt a trivia column but I will

ask you one question just for fun. What team won Ottawas last professional sports title and in what year? I will pro-vide the answer next week!

Despite the fact I am a Detroit base-ball fan I will also be rooting for Toronto this season. It would be a shame to see this country without an MLB team. That could happen if Jays arent a success on the fi eld. Toronto is starved for pro sports success!

A sad note for me at the start of each MLB season occurs when I refl ect on the loss of Montreal Expos. The faltering franchise moved to Washington, D.C. in 2005 after 35 seasons in Canadas sec-ond city. Failing attendance and owner-ship issues sealed the teams fate. The loss of the Expos has had a major impact on the profi le of the sport in Canada.

Among many good memories of the team is attending my fi rst-ever Expos game at old Jarry Park in May 1969, the teams inaugural season in the NL. Montreal beat Cincinnati Reds that day with outfi elder Mack Jones belting a grand slam home run for the Expos. Jones, who became famous in the city as the Mayor of Jonesville (the nick-name for the left fi eld bleachers at Jarry Park) died of cancer in 2004 at age 65, during the ball clubs fi nal campaign.

My favourite Expos player from the original squad was slugging right fi elder Rusty Staub. He was revered by Montreal fans who nicknamed him Le Grand Orange because of his fi ery red hair. Staub later played for Detroit which only served to make me a bigger fan!

My baseball memories fi le is lengthy. But one that always stands out was see-ing the late, great Gary Carter, one of the best power hitting catchers in Major League history, play at Jarry Park during his rookie season in 1975. Kathy and I and my sister Linda saw a three game series with Expos facing Willie Stargell (now deceased) and the Pittsburgh Pi-rates. Stargell and Carter were later in-ducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

On July 13, 1982 I was thrilled to at-tend the 53rd MLB All-Star Game which was hosted by Montreal at Olympic Sta-dium, their then new home park. The host NL team, which featured four Ex-pos (Carter, Tim Raines, Andre Dawson and pitcher Steve Rogers) in the start-ing line-up, beat the AL 4-1. Cincinnati Reds shortstop Dave Concepcin was the MVP. His second inning, two-run homer landed a couple of rows below where we were sitting in left fi eld. What a great night!

Over the course of 35 years I saw all of Expos best players during games we attended. I also saw their future stars perform with the Triple A Lynx in Ot-tawa.

Another thrill was going to a game in Detroit during Tigers sensational 1984 campaign in which they led the AL from beginning to end. Bengals capped the season with a World Series victory over NL champion San Diego Padres.

Along with my parents, my son Craig and other family members I attended countless games at venerable Tiger Sta-dium in Detroit and more recently at Comerica Park, Tigers impressive, new downtown home in the Motor City.

I have seen all of the clubs modern day stars including Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, Kirk Gibson, Cecil Fielder and outstanding pitchers such as Jack Morris, Willie Hernandez and Frank Ta-nana, to name a few. Fielder, by the way, is the father of current Tigers sensation

Prince Fielder. Cecil once played for the Blue Jays as many of you will recall.

An added bonus is that I have also had

the pleasure of seeing the top players for all of the opposing teams. Among them were famous (or infamous if you prefer) athletes such as pitching great Roger Clemens of the Red Sox and Home Run King Barry Bonds. I saw Bonds play when he was an up and coming player for Pittsburgh at Olympic Stadium.

Others I have seen who always stand out in my mind are the late Kirby Puck-ett, one of Minnesota Twins greatest players and New York Yankees left handed pitcher Ron Guidry.

I inherited my interest in the game from my father Howard. My son is an even bigger supporter than my Dad and I. So when the Boys of Summer take to the fi eld we begin a seven-month love affair with one of the greatest games in the world. To me the words Play Ball are a much anticipated harbinger of spring!

THANK YOUI would like to take this time to thank the many people who helped due to my accident at home. Thank you to the ambulance paramedics who tried so hard to comfort me when I was in such pain. Thank you to the doctors, Anderson and Jechel. I appreciated the kind and caring nurses who made my stay in the hospital more bearable. Words can not express my appreciation for the many acts of kindness and support from my friends and family. A special thank you for Karen and Earl Townsend for moving in and being there at my side. Thank you for all the hugs, phone calls, cards, flowers, meals and visits.

    Sincerely Etta OGrady

CARD OF THANKS - DONALDSONThe family of the late Raymie Donaldson would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to their relatives, friends and neighbours for their incredible love and support during his short illness and sudden passing. Thank you for your prayers, food, flowers, hugs, cards, e-mails, phone calls, visits, music, donations and the stories you shared with us. Raymie loved Lanark. He loved the people, the history and of course, he loved its music so it was a touching tribute to him that so many people came together when he was ill and then again in a fellowship of kindness and remembrance to celebrate his life. To Reverend Shelley Roberts, Peter Hannah and the church choir and to the church ladies for the wonderful lunch. To his son Larry and granddaughter Amanda for the beautiful eulogy and tribute. To his long-time music buddies Judi Moffatt, Barry Munro, Cheryl Moffat Hooghiem and Wade Foster for the beautiful music at the funeral and to his grandson Logan for the piano tribute. To the Honour Guard of music buddies that formed outside the church in respect of all the great music they made together over the years. Dad would be so proud. As Dad said: Tell my music buddies to keep on pickin! He loved you all. To his pallbearers: Jim Deacon, Don Pennett, Bill Donaldson, Brian and Matthew Steele, Lyle and Logan Reid and Andrew Donaldson and to the wonderful administrative staff, nurses and doctors at the North Lanark Community Health Centre, Perth Hospital and General Hospital, Blair & Son Funeral Home (Stuart and Pat), and to Bill and Carole-Ann Donaldson for their continued support to all of us. Raymie loved his family and he adored his grandchildren (Matt and Amanda Steele (his special nurse), Caraleigh and Logan Reid, Andrew and Lauren Donaldson) and we want to thank them for the amazing dedication they showed to the Poppa that they adored and to all the wonderful memories and life lessons they will forever hold in their hearts. He was so proud of all of you. As our family moves forward together, we will forever cherish the beautiful sound of the guitar and celebrate the life of a man we had the pleasure of calling husband, Dad, Poppa and friend.

Sending our love and gratitude from our family to yours;Feryn, Cathy & Brian, Patti & Lyle, Larry & Tammy

Perth hospital. Tom and Connie cel-ebrated their 70th wedding anniver-sary last October. Connie was the cherished grandmother of recently deceased Theo(dorable) of Cowichan Bay and Pat and Marnies son Carl. She also had two other grandchildrenLaura and Bob Jr. Connie will be missed by all her family, friends and fellow music lovers. Connie and Tom were to be seen at most every music event in Perthalways tapping the rhythm and singing along. Connie loved auctions and was a collector of antiques. After her children were launched she took a job with the Toronto Historical Board as museum curator for Gibson House. Wearing period costume Connie demonstrated pioneer skills including spinning, dying, crewel work, cook-ing and crafts. Connie loved walking a beach gathering bits of washed up nature. In her later years her huge shell collection from Winters spent in Florida, Bermuda and Vancouver Island brought her hours of pleasure. Family and close friends will gather to remember Connie privately. A celebra-tion of her life will be held at a later date. Flowers are graciously declined. For those wishing to honour Connie with a memorial donation please con-sider the Stewart Park Music Festival or the Perth Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation. Our Mom was a huge inspiration to us and to all those who had the opportunity to know her. Active to the very end the energizer bunny finally ran down.
