Persuasive Essay Assignment

In It’s a Jungle Out There! Ron Snell seems not to be afraid of anything! In his book filled with wonderful

adventures, he persuades his opinion regarding fear. Chapter by chapter, he encourages the reader to embrace

people, places, and circumstances with fearless enthusiasm.

What do you believe about fear? Would your classmates agree with you? Would Ron Snell agree with you? (He

seems not to be afraid of anything!) Would scripture encourage your viewpoint? This is your chance to

convince others of your opinion based on reason and truth.

For this assignment, write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic of fear. Many perspectives exist on this topic.

Consider these approaches:

fear is a good thing

fear must be conquered by facing it

fear holds people back from reaching their potential

only God should be feared

and so on.

You may look to the graphic organizer on page 82 of Elegant Essay to organize your thoughts. Chapter 9 of

Elegant Essay will remind you of ways to write a thesis statement.

Start with the body paragraphs using the following structure;

1. Topic Sentence

2. 1st Assertion

3. Evidence 1st Assertion

4. Explanation of Evidence

5. Transition to 2nd

Assertion (phrase or sentence)

6. 2nd

Assertion

7. Evidence for 2nd

Assertion

8. Explanation of Evidence

9. Conclusion Sentence that Transitions

Now write the introduction in this order:

1. Hook

2. Background thoughts on fear

3. Thesis

Finish with the conclusion written in this order:

1. Restate thesis

2. Summarize prongs

3. Clincher reflecting the hook

Finally, proof-read and edit your essay to include:

MLA Format

Creative title

Strong verbs

No contractions

No 1st person (I, me, my) UNLESS relating evidence for assertions

No 2nd

person (you, your). Do not address the audience directly.
