The 14th annual Maimonides RBCDominion Securities Golf Tournamentwas held on Thursday, June 2nd 2005at the Pinegrove Country Club. Thesun shone as we raised $330,000 inone of Montreal’s premier fundraisingevents.
All of the golfers, sponsors andgenerous donors showed theircommitment to the Maimonides SuiteDreams Campaign. This $5.5 millionproject will see the total refurbishmentof all of the residents’ rooms withdramatic changes to furniture, lighting, flooring, closets and bathrooms.
This year’s two new co-chairsAngela D’Angelo and Jonathan Green, took the project on with full forceand did a fantastic job recruitingnew sponsors and supporters. Theirguidance helped ensure a mostsuccessful event.
We are especially indebted toour sponsors, without whom thetournament would not have beenpossible. For the first time in its14 year history, the MaimonidesGolf tournament was renamed inrecognition of a very generousdonation from RBC Dominion
Securities, who has once againcommitted to being the presentationsponsor of the 2006 tournament.RBC’s support shows community-mindedness at its finest.
Putting on a successful golftournament is a huge undertaking. It is a phenomenal collective effortby a wonderful team of caring anddedicated individuals. Thank you toTerry Landau and Denise Zunenshinewho work diligently making calls andcollecting gifts and prizes for theevening. Their tireless efforts makeour golf tournament shine.
Allen Quallenberg and GeorgeLandau, past co-chairs of thetournament, need to be singled outfor their dedication and commitmentto Maimonides.
Thank you to every one whohelped make the 2005 tournamenta success. Mark your calendar forthe 2006 event on June 1 at Pinegrove.

Len has a long history withMaimonides that started when he was ateenager. “I volunteered here with mygirlfriend, Shelley, (who is now his wife!)when we went to BialikHigh School,” remembersLen. “I’ve never forgottenthe experience of visitingwith one resident inparticular. Occupational Therapist RevitalPerez helps Maimonides resident
Roberta Adelman with anelectric wheelchair which waspurchased with funds donated
to the Foundation in honourof the late Marion Davis.

DRIVERS ED PROGRAM
Music program brings smiles to our residents
Maimonides now has its very own DriversEducation program for residents to practice usingan electric wheelchair before taking their driverstest. This unique program was made possible due tothe efforts of Rona Davis, whose mother, the lateMarion Davis, was to be the first ‘student’. “Thisprogram would have given my mom theopportunity to practice without the constraint oftime or pressure. The possibility was there. Mymother enjoyed thinking of the opportunities; of thepossibility of practicing on the electric wheelchair inthe comfort of her Maimonides surroundings. Itreally gave her something to look forward to,” saysRona.
In the past, Maimonides residents were requiredto go to a government designated center such asLethbridge several times to be trained and evaluatedon an electric wheelchair and to then take the‘drivers test’. If they passed, it could be another 3-4months before they received their own chair fromRAMQ. “The onsite training is invaluable. It can helpin two ways. The occupational therapist can assess
whether the resident is a candidate for an electricwheelchair without having to go outside our ownfacility. As well, once the resident is found to beeligible for an electric wheelchair, this program givesthem the opportunity to practice before they receivetheir own.” says Silvana Mauro, ProfessionalCoordinator- Rehabilitation.
Roberta Adelman has had the opportunity tolearn by using the chair purchased with fundsdonated to the Foundation in honour of MarionDavis. “I am most looking forward to having myindependence a lot quicker. I won’t need any one topush my chair. I’ll be able to get around on my ownand I’ll know how because I’ve practiced onthis one.”
Marion Davis never got the chance to see if anelectric wheelchair was right for her. She only got topractice several times. “It gave her great pleasure toknow that other people might benefit from thisprogram,” says her son Louis Davis.
Endowment funds provide a way fordonors to give a gift that will keepgiving and growing far beyond theirown lifetimes. These gifts can be madein honour of a special occasion or inmemory of a loved one. A minimum of$1200 is required to establish anendowment fund at Maimonides. Theinitial tax deductible gift to anendowment fund is invested for growthin the financial market and the interestearned is used to fund programs atMaimonides. Endowment Fund namesappear on the donor boards in themain lobby of the Centre and activefunds are listed in every Perspectivepublication.
“Endowment funds are essential toensure the long-term viability ofMaimonides,” says Michael Corber,
Foundation Treasurer. “Being able tocreate a large endowment will ensurethat annual funds are available tosupport programming and services forour residents today as well as in thefuture.”
One of the newest endowmentfunds at Maimonides is the Edwin and
Nechama Endowment Fund for theArts. Recording artist Edwin OrionBrownell, Maimonides' residentpianist/composer, set up this fund sothat the Centre could hire moremusicians. “Music is so important.Even residents with advancedAlzheimers wiggle their toes or react in
some way to the power of music,”says Nechama Surik, Edwin’spartner and inspiration. “When amusician of Edwin's talent andability performs, it has an evenmore powerful effect. Many of ourresidents describe him as their'best medicine.'”
Since 2002, Edwin has workedand volunteered at Maimonides, performing old-time favourites aswell as his own compositions.
“It’s amazing that many of theresidents, even those with memoryproblems, remember the words to myoriginal songs. Their faces light upwhen they hear the music and thatwarms my heart,” says Edwin.
Edwin performed a solo concertcalled Maimonides Pops at Place desArts in April and donated part of theproceeds to help start the Edwin andNechama Endowment Fund for theArts. A portion of the sales of his fourthCD, Maimonides Pops: Edwin OrionBrownell Rocks the Classics will continueto enrich the Endowment Fund.

While others their age work atsummer jobs or travel, participantsin Maimonides unique MISSIVE(Maimonides Intensive Summer Sessionfor Individual Volunteer Experience)volunteer program give of their time tohelp the elderly. MISSIVEis designed to give studentswho are contemplating acareer in health care aninterdisciplinary experienceof working with older adults.Participants volunteer at theCentre five days a week from8:30 am to 3:30 pm during thiseight-week intensive summerprogram.
"I have a great deal ofrespect and admiration forthese students who are at theprime of their lives. Theyreally can do anything, butthey choose to give so much ofthemselves and in return, they learnlifelong lessons," says Len Lewkowict,Centre Board President.
This experience gives students the
opportunity to become directly involvedin the day-to-day programs andactivities of the residents. “I’m walkingaway with much more knowledge andcompassion for the elderly, not tomention respect,” says Natasha Cohen,18, one of last years MISSIVEs and thecoordinator of the 2005 group. Cohen is
one of seven from her year to beaccepted into a medical school.
“Being a MISSIVE allowed me to seethe human aspect of health care, not justthe academic side.” says nineteen year-
old Alex Saveriano, who, together withCohen, is part of the McGill Med-Pprogram. “There’s no better way to learnabout patient care than to work directlywith them,” he adds.
As part of the program, MISSIVEsalso attend daily lectures, educationseminars, visit other hospitals in
the Montreal area andvolunteer in one of themany departments atthe Centre. “I workedwith residents whohave Alzheimers or othercognitive problems. I learnthow to communicate withthem, how to treat them, how to be with them. I gotto see how I can makea difference in their livesand that’s why I want togo into medicine,” saysYoujia Shen, 19.
Maimonides is proud ofits MISSIVE graduates. "These are ourfuture leaders, future health careproviders, future society," saysLewkowict. "I think we are in goodhands."

Michael’s personal connection toMaimonides runs deep. Hisgrandmother Edith Schwartz was aresident for almost two years. “Thiscampaign is a great opportunity to
assist in raising funds to keepMaimonides at the forefront ofgeriatric care. I was very pleasedwith the care my grandmotherreceived. It is very important thatthe physical environment meetsthe same standards of excellenceprovided by the staff and variousprograms. I look forward to thechallenges and the opportunities tointeract with leaders of ourcommunity to help refurbish thisfacility,” says Michael, who has been apartner at RSM Richter since 1997.

Maimonides has not refurbishedits resident rooms since the buildingwas constructed in the 1960's. "The

Alan did not offer his time toMaimonides by chance. The facility isdear to his heart. His mother, LauraSchwartz, has been very active with theAuxiliary and was recently honoredfor her commitment to the Centre.
"Alan has always been generouswith both his time and money, but hehas often chosen to remain in thebackground. Having Alan choose totake on a more visible and active roleas Co-Chair of the Suite DreamsCampaign is a recognition of theimportance that he feels for thisproject, as well as a guarantee of itssuccess," says Jeffrey Zunenshine, afriend of Mr. Schwartz and a memberof the Maimonides Foundation Boardof Directors.
