S. Satyamurti was born at Tirumayam in Pudukkottai state on 19 August 1887. He graduated from Madras Christian College and later went on to practice law as an advocate. He entered politics at an early age, winning college elections and eventually emerging as one of the foremost leaders of the Indian National Congress and a doyen of the freedom movement. In 1919, the Congress sent 32-year-old Sathyamurthi as its representative to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (of the UK) to protest the Montagu-Chelmsford reforms and the Rowlatt Act. It was due to Satyamurti's efforts that the Congress won the 1937 elections to the Madras Legislative Assembly.

When Satyamurti became the Mayor of Madras in 1939, the city of Madras was in the grip of an acute water scarcity. He persuaded the British Government and the Colonial Governor to agree to the proposal of building a reservoir in Poondi, about 50 km west of the city, to augment the water supply. In those days, the tenure of Mayorship was only for a year. However, due to Satyamurti's consistent efforts, the foundation stone for the reservoir was laid in a matter of eight months. Sadly, Satyamurti was not alive to see the commissioning of the only reservoir built to quench the thirst of Madras, in 1944.

Satyamurti is also remembered today as the political mentor of Kumaraswami Kamaraj, who was the Chief Minister of the State between 1954 and 1963. Due to Kamaraj's initiative, the Poondi reservoir was named after Satyamurti. The headquarters of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee was also named 'Satyamurti Bhavan', in his honour.

Satyamurti was instrumental in the setting up of the Madras Music Academy and was associated with the founding of the Annamalai University. He also supported the revival of Bharatanatyam and its introduction in the Music Academy.

(1887 -1943)

Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom in all just pursuits. - Thomas Jefferson

In the earlier years, he had been an accomplished stage actor and had played the title role in the famous historical Tamil play Manohara. Satyamurti was elected President of South Indian Film Chambers in 1937 and 1938, and was invited to preside over the All India Motion Picture Congress at Bombay in 1939.

Like many other prominent Indian patriots, Satyamurti was arrested and incarcerated numerous times by the British. He was arrested in 1930 while trying to hoist the Indian flag atop the

Parthasarathy Temple in Madras. He was also actively involved in the Swadeshi movement and was arrested in 1942 for performing 'Individual satyagraha' at the height of the Quit India Movement. He was tried and deported to Amravathi Jail in Nagpur and endured a spinal cord injury during the journey. He succumbed to his injuries at the General Hospital, Madras, on 28 March 1943.

A stamp commemorating him was released in 1987. On 1 October 2002, his statue was unveiled in the Parliament House by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Once, Gandhiji was travelling by train. The scenery outside was very beautiful. He was standing at the door and looking at India's natural beauty.

Suddenly, it so happened that one of his chappals slipped away and fell off the train. Without wasting a moment, Gandhiji threw the second chappal also.

One of his companions asked, “Why did you throw the second chappal?”

Gandhiji said, “It would have been no use to me. And the fallen chappal too would have been of no use to the finder. Now at least the finder can use the full pair.”

The questioner was amazed and delighted at Gandhiji's quick-wittedness and concern for others.http://creative.sulekha.com/inspiring-anecdotes-of-gandhiji_496401_blog

From the uprising of 1857, the journey for India's freedom was painstaking, and also a long one. After struggling for more than a century (1857-1947) we, the Indians, got our freedom back. How can we forget the JallianwalaBagh genocide in which thousands of innocent Indians were killed? Hundreds of brave fighters sacrificed their lives for the attainment of independence. It has been 72 years since India has gained Independence, and yet, the powerful words of our freedom fighters never fail to give us goosebumps. They tend to ignite a strange fire and love wihin us for our homeland, time and again.

“Inqlaab Zindanbad”- Shaheed Bhagat Singh

The meaning of the slogan “Inqlaab Zindanbad” is “Long live the revolution”. Popularised by one of the most influential Indian revolutionaries –– Bhagat Singh, this slogan became one of the rallying cries of the Independence struggle. He was the one who sacri-

ficed his life for the country at the young age of 23.

“Tum Muje Khoon Do, Mai Tumhe Azadi Dunga” – Subhash Chandra Bose

freedom struggle and inspired thousands of young minds to lay down their lives for the motherland.

“Karo ya Maro” – Mahatma Gandhi

The speech, “Do or Die” was delivered by Mahatma Gandhi after a meeting of AICC (All India Congress Committee) which was held on 7th August 1942. The next day - i.e, on 8th August 1942, Quit India resolution was passed with an overwhelming majority which

declared the immediate ending of British rule in India.

'Sare Jahan Se Achha Hindustan Hamara' – Muhammad Iqbal

Muhammad Iqbal was a famous poet, politician, philosopher and a remarkable academic. Iqbal wrote

'Sare Jahan se Achha Hindustan Hamara', the famous song that was used as a slogan to instill the feeling of patriotism. The abridged version of the song is still sung and is also played frequently as a marching song by the Indian Armed Forces.

'Vande Mataram' – Bankim Chandra Chatterjee

'Vande Mataram', - meaning; 'Mother, I bow to thee', was a poem written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, an Indian journalist and activist. He is the one who personified India as a mother goddess during the Indian National Movement in this poem. Rabindranath Tagore set it to tune and sang it. The first stanza of the

poem has been adopted as the national song of India.

“Satyameva Jayate” – Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya

The origin of this slogan lies in the well-known mantra from the Mundaka Upanishad. “Truth alone triumphs” is the literal meaning of this phrase which is not only adopted as the national motto of India but also inscribed at the base of our national emblem. It was Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the

founder of Banaras Hindu University and an activist, who used this slogan in his presidential address in 1918 during the Indian National Congress convention.
